You're right about the amish going outside of their culture at 16-18, it's called Rumspringa and it's so they can experience life outside and have 1-2 years to decide if they want to commit to the amish ways.

You really should watch the glee version, where Karl "sings" Van Halen's Jump. The one in this is some alternative because they didn't want to pay for the song rights in some regions. As in, there are two versions of this episode, with different glee bits and this one is inferior.
