The phrase 'Touchdown' comes from the scoring of a Try, as was mentioned the ball has to be touched down onto the ground for it to be confirmed.

And it's called "try" because at the very beginning of rugby era, this action give no point, but give the possibility of trying to score with the conversion kick. Laws change, but name stay

And the reason that it is called a 'Try' is that when Rugby first started touching down the ball beyond the line scored no points but it allowed the team to 'try' and kick the ball over the crossbar which scored points. A drop goal is simply not a kick, the ball must bounce on the ground before the kickers boot contacts the ball.

He doesnt explain that a conversion is taken from the same distance to the side line as the touch down of the ball during the try. Ergo, better chance of making a conversion if the try occurs between or close to the goal posts. If your going to kick the ball forward (for a goal or otherwise) it needs to make contact with the ground before the foot.

Rugby referees have Draconian powers and players can be red car see ed for swearing at the referee. In the major leagues and international games referees wear a microphone and viewers can hear them explain decisions to players. Definitely react to Nigel Owens , the world's best referee, now retired, to get an idea of how rugby referees try to relate to players.

a drop goal means you drop the ball to the ground in front of your kicking foot before kicking, which is called a drop kick, you can't just punt the ball on the full to go between the post. . passing the ball forward or dropping it (fumble/knock on) results in stoppage and a scrum set, the dude in the vid said results in a penalty but no! it's a scrum, which is when the big guys the 2 forward packs pack down and push against each other to win ball possession.

Your reaction to rugby is the best one I've seen. You either knew quite a bit already, or you're very quick on the uptake!👍 One clarification: For the 'conversion' attempt after a try is scored, the ball must be placed on the ground, or on a 'tee', directly in line from the point at which the ball was touched down. This explains why the try-scorer usually grounds the ball as close to the goal-posts as possible, or in line with the designated kicker's preferred kicking angle. The kicker can choose the distance from the try-line to place the ball, but the angle is determined by the touchdown point.

You cannot just 'punt' the ball between the posts to score; a drop kick is made by dropping the ball and then kicking it immediately after it it bounces. Rugby is played as two halves of 40 minutes each with a 10-15 minute break between; there are no other breaks, or time outs. Like blood substitutions if a player is struck in the head he or she must go off for a 'head injury assessment (HIA) and a temporary sub is brought on for them; if the player fails the HIA then the sub stays on.

I played rugby when I was young. It must be recognized, at that time the game was hard and a little dangerous, especially when playing against inexperienced players who did not know how to master the tackling technique. Unfortunately there were accidents sometimes with serious consequences. But now the rules have changed in order to protect the players and for children the rules are also adapted to avoid injuries, which allows the practice of this sport without risk to health. Top level rugby is truly spectacular. There is something beautiful in this sport that I cannot explain. The best way to see this is to look at, for example, the team from Ireland and of course from New Zealand.

Awarded for forward pass, knock on (fumble forward), not straight throw at the line out, not getting the ball out if a maul. Line out or Lines-out, not line up. Restarts game when ball carriers steps on or over the touch line (out of bounds at the sides).

You can tackle someone as hard as you like but if you bring them down on their head/neck, whether it is 'intentional or not, you will be punished. Modern Rugby is very aware of the effect of accumulative head injuries in a playing career. The people who run rugby want new generations of young kids to take up the sport; what happens if parents decide it is too risky to allow their children to play?

Like everyone says on their reactions "And they do all this with no pads? this is crazy!". Well, because of that players and referees take discipline and penalties very serious. You can watch any number of videos of referees. What is also great is that a lot of them especially in big games will be mic´d and they will explain the reasoning for the desicions. Another point that you reacted on is the lenght of the game and the subs. Even the fatest slowest player on the team needs to be able to run for 80 minutes. A massive giant player that cannot run after the ball is not good. As soon as you pass the ball and or after you are tackled, you are expected to get up and get back in the game.

You don't get subbed for playing poorly (generally speaking). It's more strageic. As a coach you have to decide before the game how you want your bench (sub players) to be as in, how many forwards or backs you want on the bench then subs are generally put into the game as impact players or some fresh legs etc. Often middle to late in the 2nd half. Some players who started there game may also get shuffled into different positions when subs are brought on depending on where they're likely to be most impactful

  • @kingspeechless1607

I agree that generally speaking you don't get subbed for "playing poorly" but there have have been some significant substitutions for players. Henry Paul, a New Zealand Rugby League player who became an England Union player was substituted (uninjured) after just 25 minutes of his sixth International (against Australia in 2004) and was never selected again. Another one was Mauro Bergamasco of Italy, a flanker, who was bizarrely selected to play at scrum half against England in 2009 and was pulled off at half time after mistakes that lead directly to three England tries. He did go on to play until he retired in 2015 with more than a 100 caps.

The kick after a Try is scored is not a Field Goal. It's a Conversion. A Field Goal is a Penalty Kick. The Drop Goal must bounce off the ground before you kick it. You cannot just punt it to score. The pitch is much larger than an American Football field. It's 10 yards longer and 25 yards wider. The width is important. If it was as narrow as a gridiron football field, with 15 a side there would be nowhere to run. There are several types of subs. First there is the standard 'permanent' sub. The player taken off may not return to play as a 'normal' 'elective' substitution. If the Ref decides that a player appears to have been concussed he can have that player sent off to be assessed by Medical Staff and his team may replace him. The Medics have 10 minutes to check him out. If he is found to be OK he can return to play. if not the substitution is made 'permanent'. A player that has been electively taken off may be used as this 'temporary replacement' even if it later becomes permanent. Similar to the Head Injury Assessment, if a player is bleeding they can be sent off to treat the wound and stop the leakage. The law for this kind of replacement is the same as the HIA above. In most cases just being offside is not a penalty. You will be offside. Often. If you pass the ball (backwards) to another player, you become in front of him and so you are now offside. What incurs the 'wrath' of the Ref is interfering with play while being offside. Also, if you are offside you are expected to make an effort to get back into an onside position. Now, let's discuss something you will not see in any "Rugby Laws' video that I have ever seen. Advantage. If the Ref sees a penalty or infraction, unless it is dangerous, or it is obvious that the offenders have gained an advantage from it he does not immediately blow his whistle to stop play. He will call out "Advantage (insert non-offending team's color here)" and point at them. They now have the opportunity to continue play. This is when you break out your higher risk plays because if it fails and you do not gain a sufficient Advantage the Ref will then stop play, bring the ball back to where the infraction occurred and then enforce what ever Law was broken. This is the equivalent of the Ref deciding whether you wanted the "penalty or the play" for you.

  • @ianarnett

A knock on does not give the opposition a penalty! It gives them the chance to play the ball, but normally results in a scrum with the opposite scrum half putting the ball in.

Modern couches do not sub for bad play as nuch as getting the most out of his team. If the keybolayers can give everything for 60 minutes of the game then they can be subbed for dresh legs and make an impact on the last 20min of play. This is the strat that South Africa used to win in the 2019 world cup.

This is a slightly better rugby basics video than some I've seen, but still has some basic errors. A knock-on almost always brings a scrum, not a penalty. The only time a penalty is given is when a player knocks-on while trying to intercept a pass and realistically was not going to get the ball. You can watch a lot of games and never see a penalty given for a knock-on. Forward passes also invariably result in a scrum, not a penalty. Technically a penalty could be given for a blatant attempt to break the laws of the game, but in many decades of playing and watching rugby I've never seen a forward pass penalised. Also, it's a lineout, not a lineup. Etc.

The "intent" of a player when committing a foul is not relevant. For instance, in recent times if you make contact with a player's head when tackling it does not matter if you meant to do it or not; you will receive a card regardless. You can tackle players just as hard as you like; but we do not want serious injuries to players because of dangerous contacts. There are well-known players of previous generations who have accumulative head injuries leading to dementia, etc, in their forties (same as in NFL). That is also not a good advertisement for the game for parents of children who wish to play but require parental consent.

Rugby is a beautiful game that allows everyone on the field to score. However the team will always work as a team. You put into action what you practice during the week. But it is also a very Hi IQ game across the whole team. Because you have to adapt within 1000th of a second and make a decision if you have the ball. Every player on the field should expect the ball to be passed to them, whether you are a forward or a back. Whereas in American Football only pretty much the receivers score or touch the ball. Your line of scrimmage is limited to just that. Your blockers are just that. So it is limited in who does what. But Rugby is all inclusive. You can be short, tall, thin, stocky. It’s about having the courage to step on the field and give it 200% Only a pussy gives 100% A real athlete goes above and beyond. These are the players that stand out above the crowd of players. Don’t forget those who are Rugby Nations, start playing the game by the time we can hold a ball and run. Which for most is 5 year’s old. USA has a fine Rugby Team who just need the communities at large to buy into an exciting sport. There is no prouder moment for a parent if their child scored a try. Or put in a Try saving tackle. Rugby brings people and players together as you can’t have one without the other. Your fan base is paramount. Build up your clubs both local and State. Support and promote competition amongst the wider community. Invite foreign Rugby Teams to play against whether on a club or Representative level. And you will see growth and interest in the sport like never before. In New Zealand 🇳🇿 home of the greatest Rugby Nation in the world 🌎. We love and respect the players, coaches, staff and game. It’s our biggest sport. If we lose a game, the whole nation goes into some kind of mourning, because our expectation is to win every game.

Springboks (South Africa), not particularly liked by envious nations but are worth reacting to, They are the defending world champions and base their game play on high physicality and forward pack dominance. The All Blacks are New Zealand and base their games on finesse and quick running ball, also a great team to react to. These two teams each have 3 world cup titles to their name.

Not Liked by envious fan😂😂. Envious of what exactly? Losing 3 out of the last 4 too the wallabies and losing literally every trophy you play for 3 years straight after not playing for a year like cowards. Coming from an all blacks fan. 61-38 says it all

where did you find this video? there's a few glaring errors. I think it was scripted from a rule book by someone who's never watched a game.

I am surprised that to illustrate the rules of Rugby the narrator did not take the match of the six nations tournament 2023 France vs England. Yet a 53-10 without card would have been interesting to analyze.
