American World War Rifles CMP 2020 | Civilian Marksmanship Program HAUL 1903A3 1917 1903 Bolt Action

Ойын-сауық

After years of admiring these fantastic rifles I figured 2020 was finally the time to head over to the CMP and pick myself up a set of the, bolt action, American World War Rifles. The Civilian Marksmanship Program has two locations in Alabama. One in Anniston, CMP South, and another about 20 minutes away in Talladega, CMP Talladega Marksmanship Park. I set out from Georgia on this trip with my mind set on coming back with at least a couple rifles. There was a line to get into the Anniston store so we headed on over to Talladega. The doors had just opened and I was happy to find full rifle racks. They had a decent little selection of "American Mausers". I had to pick out myself a 1917 Enfield first thing. There were probably a dozen to choose from in various conditions. After I decided on a M1917 I went right onto the 1903's. They had both WW1 1903 rifles and WW2 1903A3's. There weren't as many to choose from as there were M1917's but there was still a decent selection. Several of the A3's had stocks that had been lacquered at some point. I managed to find an example of each that I thought worthy of bringing home. This was the most money I have ever spent on firearms at a single time but I think it was well worth it. I'm so glad the CMP is here to offer these outstanding pieces of American history back to the citizens of our great country.
Thanks for Watching!

I happily visited the South Store in Anniston in early December when they reopened. They had a dozen 1903A3s, a dozen M1917s, no 1903s but they did have one single quite nice 1898 Krag - so I too blew my firearms budget on buddies for my Garand and M1 Carbine. Great trip! The varnish finish most likely done at a VFW or American Legion where used for funerals / color guard duty before being turned in. My shiny 03-A3 had a VFW label on it - but a perfect 1/1 muzzle / throat reading and otherwise fantastic. I felt lucky to find the Krag - good to be there early!

I was disappointed to find that my M1 Garand was made in the mid 50s (it missed the Korean Police Action) , my 1903 was made in the early 20s (it may have seen action in WWII) and my Colt M1917 was made in the 20s as well. The good part is, I didnt pay over $350 for any of them, then again its has been 20 some years since I purchased them. I also purchased my M1917 Eddystone, P14 and M1 carbines for under $350 as well. I miss those prices...... P.S. nice score.

I just recently, within the last month, picked up a 1903, a 1903A3, and a Model 1917. I was told by Bob, one of the armorers at the North Store at Camp Perry, that the bolt guns they have on display right now are all they have in the inventory, which is why I got all 3 on the same trip, along with another Garand. The thing with the bolt guns is that you can only buy one of each type per year, while your yearly limit for all guns is 8. So since I bought 3 different bolt guns and a Garand this trip, my limit is now 4 guns for the rest of the year, although they didn't say if the limit was per calender year, or a year from your purchase date. I shall have to call them when they reopen after the holidays to verify that.

i scored a 199$ Remington made m1917 originally made in feb 1918. it it threw me off at first because its sight base had ben milled off and was fitted with a very early weaver k4 .it was on a rack next to a 700$ ruger model 77 in 30.06 and they looked quite similar. both actions had the dog leg bolt, im not in to bubba sporters witch is what most people would have seen from 10 feet away. the smaller details told another story, the wood and the finish and embellishments wer subtle but not amateur work at all! its a custom rifle built on a p17 action made sometime in the 1930s. its got a med heavy barrel and the wood is great. its also tapped for an aperture sight. it weighs 12 pounds lol i can shoot it all day the recoil is very sedate compared to a 1903a3 witch left a bruise if i recall..it shoots excellent! i put 5 180 grn bthp inside an inch square at 250 yards. i shot an even smaller group with the 220grn bthp and even that stout load was pleasant to shoot! its one of my few keepers. me and the gun shop clerk wer going over the rifle as the paperwork was being delt with and he was telling me how much it would cost to have a gunsmith re do an action barrel and the works today. it was a ridiculous sum and we both kinda chuckled because since its not an original mill surp its almost worthless to most people.but as a shooter its priceless to me!

The only thing the M1917 has in common with the Enfield is cock on close and the name. And it is a modified Pattern 14 which still used .303 British. Still wonder why the Brits didn't actually adopt the P14 since you can load a P14 faster than a Mk1 Mod 3 which takes longer due to it being a 10 round rifle?
