How *presumptuous* of you to *_think_*_ you know_ what *_she_*_ was _*_thinking_* while being *attacked* by a apex predator. She was likely *_terrified_* and in *_immense pain,_* but the _shock, adrenaline_ and _cortisol_ would've kicked in, so it might seem _surreal_ to her, as people tended to her and got her to safety. Once paramedics/medical staff got to her, she'd have likely been given *_painkillers_* and *_blood transfusions_* for the blood loss. I do hope she recovers and can eventually become mobile again, likely with a prosthetic. It's sad that she's just 22, and had this life-changing incident and devastating injury.

...... Fact: it is rare - unless you buy into the Hollywood ticket selling hype (FEAR SELLS)... Fact: Every time you go into the ocean, they are there - always have been. These animals have been there FOR A LONG TIME. ..... The most dangerous thing in the water are other people ... People feeding sharks is a BAD IDEA ... Fun to watch, but it removes their fear of us... And associates people with a "snack".

Hopefully this helps someone… but I grew up in Hawai’i and some measures we take to stay safe are -never swimming during dusk or dawn -get out of the water if you see turtles or seals or also if you see a school of fish jumping and fleeing from something -don’t swim in waters that’s near waterways (streams, rivers etc) that merge/empty into the ocean or the day after a heavy rain -don’t swim when the ocean is murky -do research to see if there’s patterns of certain times/months with more shark attacks than normal and avoid swimming at those times -if you can find out when pupping season is for the top predatory sharks in your area is, avoid swimming at those times -as tempting as the solitude is, never be the only person in the water, you’re safer in numbers -remember that you aren’t safe just because you’re in shallow water -NEVER turn your back to the ocean. You should pay attention so you know if a rogue wave, surfboard or SHARK is approaching you and if they are they won’t be coming from shore. -piggy backing off of the above, I just recently saw a video of a man who studies great white and tiger shark behavior by watching them with his drone and something that stuck out to me is he said one behavior that he witnessed 100% of the time, was that sharks always approached surfers and sup boarders from behind a few times to “check them out”. The people never even realized the sharks were right there and he had no way of warning them. What was interesting, was that the sup boarders were in open ocean paddling in various directions and the sharks always could tell which end was the peoples front and which was their back and they would swim out undetected until able to approach from behind… it was creepy to see. So that, to me, is just another reason to not have my back to the ocean.

@@nofilterbtxh5000 To be fair, these people didn’t benefit from ancestors teaching them these things like we did, because they had no reason to know these things if they didn’t grow up on the ocean. In Hawai’i we don’t have snakes, bears or wolves… so if I went somewhere where they have those things, I wouldn’t know how to keep myself safe either.

Ok genuine question: they have technology that can read the water and tell fishermen where big game is, why don't they utilize it in heavily trafficked tourist areas to watch for sharks?

Calmly get out of the water…? Are you serious, I have much better advice, ‘grab the closest person and shove them in front of the shark and then get out of the water while trying to get more people between you and the shark…. And don’t scream shark, you don’t want others to get out of the water before you!

It’s never random bad luck the facts are sharks are unpredictable and should never be trusted which in turn stay out of open water that’s what swimming pools are for, who wants to be hunted by 15-20 foot sharks in open water isn’t smart I’m just saying.

They have to say it's a shark attack. The police here in TCI don't even have an official report so how come a foreign media does? Moet probably a boat accident but cannot tell officially cause the business gets shut and ppl would get imprisoned. Hard to prove what happened cause it was on a private boat. The wound looked like a cut not a bite as well

It was not a shark attack it was an attack by the tour operators boat propeller and a shark happened to be in the area and was attracted to the blood. The diver and her foot were removed before any possible attack if there was ever gonna be one.

Out of all of the animal attacks, why do we keep on hearing every single time somebody gets bitten by a shark? Who cares? There are sharks in the water. Swim at your own risk. They don't report on every single thing people get hurt doing when they were taking their own risks. But for some reason we hear about shark bites all the time

I'm curious if they identified what kind of shark it was? When we were in the Bahamas, there were lemon sharks swimming near us, and the lifeguards told us not to worry. I guess not all sharks are violent, so I'd wish they'd distinguish the type of shark in these reports.
