American Tobacco Trail: Cycling the 22-Mile Rail Trail from Durham, NC to just South of Apex, NC

Join me as Jaydog Outdoors puts wheels down on a spectacular rail trail starting at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park: The American Tobacco Trail!
I mount the Giant Revolt Advanced 3 Gravel Bike to tackle this bit of asphalt and crushed stone. After a bit of maneuvering through a housing area and a number of street crossings in the Durham area, the trail opens up into a rejuvenating session of rolling on a wide path cut through tall pines and eventually into beautiful wetlands.
Watch the ride unfold from beginning to end or jump around using the scene selection below. Either way, I think you'll find that this trail is one to add to your list of "to do" rides or walks.
Thanks for watching!
Please SUBSCRIBE to see more of these small adventures on the bike as they become available.

Being on a rail, it's flat enough to take an elderly person. I took my 75yr old mother on the gravel part with her single speed cruiser and she loved it. Nice bike and video, it took me down memory lane.

If you have not already, you need to peek at the Neuse River Trail. Stays a little cooler than the tobacco trail so better for the summer. Thanks for the video. Stay safe, God bless, and keep the wheels rolling.

The Neuse River Trail is on my list to ride. If it’s cooler, I may wait to ride that one until next summer. Thanks for your comment!

I waited for the trail to get connected. Not sure if all the trail is connected. You can start below the dam and it stops near Clayton.I think it's 34 miles. Great ride from the dam to Clayton and back.🚴‍♂️🚴‍♀️

Amazing how they can make a railtrail from Durham to Apex and make it so confusing with no signs at intersection. Need signs saying Apex this way ,Durham this way

Why is the trail so narrow.? Florida trails are wide

Most of this one was fairly wide compared to what I’ve been on so far. I road the Van Fleet State Trail in Florida. Only FL trail so far but I’ll be back!

I saw a couple bikes with really bright lights. Sometimes I see them flashing like a strobe. Is the idea to cause a seizure with oncoming traffic or bicyclist? It seems really weird that they do this.

I guess the idea is to alert motorists of a bicycle or other moving object on the road. I see flashing lights while driving and I tend to slow down automatically. Usually it’s a slow flash, not as fast as a strobe, but some cyclists might use something like that.
