When you mentioned the Kings and Queens of England, I just wondered if you’d seen Horrible Histories yet. If you haven’t, it’s a British history show for children, but it’s really good, and I know this is cringey, but it’s really British. I only recently found out that other countries don’t have it, so I recommend watching some of the early to mid seasons of it if you want to know about British history. PS: Their Kings and Queens song is low-key one of the catchiest things on the planet and I don’t know why it isn’t a meme yet.

Crystal Palace is NOT a stop on the Underground, it's a stop on the Overground, on a branch to the west of Sydenham, on the line to West Croydon. As stated in the video, the Great Exhibition took place in Hyde Park in 1851 and this is where the Crystal Palace was built as an exhibition hall. It was moved to Penge Common (the area now known as Crystal Palace) in 1854 and stood there until it was destroyed by fire in 1936.

That's where it says the the palace was moved to 'the area known as Penge Common at the top of Penge Peak, next to Sydenham Hill.' Traditionally the split has been that Barristers stand up and represent their clients in the court room as advocates, whilst solicitors do the behind the scenes work. Barristers tend to get the glory but both are respected professions. My parents electrician neighbour’s son was a Barrister. Also, I studied Law at university in London; two of my friends are Barristers, one is Black British (Ghanaian parents) and one is Black Caribbean (grew up in Canada). Both went to state schools. I know what you mean about “Solicitor” being a horrible word though. It reminds a lot of people of prostitution, i.e. the offence of “soliciting”. The Marxist analysis is too simplistic though. There have been some good examples of people challanging the British establishment with the weight of legal arguement and winning, without a single shot fired.

Honestly, that's probably just because one is a monarchy and the other is a Republic. Also, here in 'Merica, politicians and government is worshiped, almost in a religious way. I mean, American History is fun and how the nation got started can be interesting, but I do think that there should be some questions about the culture in general as well. Over in the UK, people who are looked up to tend to be writers, artists, scientists, etc more than the government (well, except for maybe Churchill lol He's put on a pedestal even here in the US), which is a lot more commendable than worshiping lawmakers (imho).

I think it comes down to different views on the idea of a “naturalised citizenry”. The USA has always had the whole “you’re free to not give a damn” thing and so probably doesn’t value the idea of naturalisation as much as the UK does. Also the UK is way more densely populated than the USA, so a lack of social cohesion can have much worse consequences in the long run than in a place where the dissatisfied tend to go and live in some forest somewhere.

  • @jonquilgemstone

    @jonquilgemstone

Andrew Pulrang I guess the US emphasizes that because citizens have a greater impact on the government than in the UK. Not to mention, the US does not really have one set "culture" due to 1) an exceptionally diverse population, and 2) regional differences (geographically, it spans a whole continent, and local governments contribute to even more differences). So, cultural questions would actually be quite unfair because it varies so much, while the system and structure of government is the one thing applicable everywhere in the nation.

@@jaspirita I don't think that makes much sense as an explanation. Politicians are deeply unpopular in the US and political knowledge is poor, as it is in the UK and basically every country in the world. Also, I'd say Americans clearly care more about movies, music, books, sports, and other aspects of culture than politics. The only election anybody cares about is the presidential election and the voter turnout is still pretty poor. I think the difference lies more in the notion of what nationality means. In the US and other countries, culture is not a critical component of nationality. Even language isn't as critical a component as it is in many countries. Laws of naturalization and natural-born citizenship in the US have always been quite lax in this regard, especially compared to its European counterparts.

21/24, got the film actors one wrong because I don't watch films, the Cenotaph one because I never heard of it (live in yorkshire) and the St Davids day one but I don't care about any of the Saints, so I don't remember the dates for any of them. I remember doing Citizenship for A levels and during one of the classes we were given a citizenship test like this to see how well we would do for fun basically. Unsurprisingly the majority didn't reach the 18/24 requirement to pass, since the questions are very luck of the draw dependant. You could get a test with just easy questions and breeze through, or get shit on with only hard questions.

You are shown a picture of a group of men in a field kicking around ball trying to get it into a great big net with a guy standing in front of it they ask you what sport is this if you say football and not soccer you're a 1/3 of the way there 2 they wheel in a dessert cart and if you can pick out the crumpet your 2/3 of the way there 3. They show you a clip from a Dave Chappelle comedy special and a clip of John Cleese in a dress speaking in a funny voice if you laugh harder at John Cleese you are officially British

I took a practice Canadian immigration test, as I recently got my PR and a prepping to apply for Citizenship as soon as possible, and (regarding your final question on here) I have to say: if The Queen is ever an answer for "who has the power to __" or "who does __" -- it's her. I was 1 question away from failing the practice test because I answered The Prime Minister was Canada's Head of State instead of The Queen. Lesson learned. (Also, Tilda Swinton is amazing!)

Maybe you should take into conideration, that the book is for foreigners from everywhere. And not everyone has english as a native language. Even if ther level has to be high enough to take the test, it may seem a lot easier for you as you are still an english native.

  • @brit9662

I thought that too. Not just the language, but the culture. If I read something equivalent to the nightclub question about something in Japanese culture or something, I might find that interesting and the description might seem obvious once pointed out, but when taking in a lot new information that kind of logic doesn't always run but it is something widespread enough that it's relevant to know. He's a nice chap, but it's a shame he comes across as a little arrogant in this regard because I'm sure he wouldn't want to come across as mocking his fellows who are also studying really hard to pass this same test.

brit gordon I think it was just because if someone knows the word for "night", they should be able to guess what it is. Plus, it's a bit random to talk about night clubs in the first place (though I get it may serve as a means of integrating new citizens into the culture, on top of the technical knowledge).

  • @brit9662

@@jonquilgemstone I appreciate that is a strong possibility, but I think it's easy to take that for granted if you already know what it is... others might need a prompt. I'm sure there are a great many people who do speak English who don't think about the component parts of the words they use and why they are called that, and might be grateful for that insight were they learning a word for the first time. What with many people going out on the weekend and making a right raucous - affecting our emergency services and all - it's a pretty relevant thing to know

What should be on the test: 1. What is the name of the famous bridge in London, consisting of two large structures on each side, a draw bridge in the middle, and suspension cables on each side? • Vauxhall Bridge • Tower Bridge • London Bridge • Westminster Bridge 2. What is the name of the famous clock tower in London. • Tower of London • London Eye • Big Ben • Elizabeth Tower Sure, both are about London, but people get these wrong a lot.

The important thing is not knowing who was the first to win the 10 k: it's showing that a prospective immigrant is willing and able to acculturate-something that's vitally important for any nation. It's not an exaggeration to say that a nation will ultimately fail if its residents don't care about their shared history, culture and identity. If it's just a bunch of individuals without a binding sense of identity, they will flee or cower when faced with the hardship of economic depression, war or other crisis. Further, knowing about the history and culture of a nation is a critical part in being a participant in the ongoing life of that nation. The things a group does for art and entertainment are, in some ways, a more important determiner of who those people are than what laws they follow and what jobs they do. If you're not going to make friends and share activities with your community, you are likely to be a liability to that community, not an asset. You wouldn't be keen to marry somebody who didn't care enough to learn about your favorite book or your accomplishments, would you? Why would you expect a nation to take in somebody who doesn't care enough to learn about its culture? A nation is a union of millions of people who all have to live together for better, for worse, for richer or poorer.

you need to be able to integrate. unluckily it's way too easy to skip the test and cheat it. majority of people in my citizenship ceremony weren't white, infact i was the only white person there, and most of them weren't speaking english at all, and when they did they couldnt form a sentence. there were some old people there to greet us but you could tell they were disappointed.

"The Peerage" is the term for all nobility. Who says "arise Sir/Madam " after the accolade? The Queen (or King). Historically it was possible for lower ranking nobles to create knights, but since Monarch is the only choice on the test which is also a noble, it's the only pertinent answer. Good job on some of the tricky ones.
