In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 8 Topic 14 of the AP U.S. History curriculum which is set in period 8 (1945-1980).
Starting with the presidential campaign of Barry Goldwater in 1964, American experienced a significant conservative backlash against the societal changes occurring in the second half of the twentieth century.
From the decision to make abortion legal in Roe v Wade to the changing sexual norms of the sexual revolution to the massive changes going on to the family structure thanks to the women's movement, conservatives during this period were nervous that their beloved society was slipping away from them.
To combat these changes, people like William F. Buckley published conservative news. The John Birch Society also wrote for conservatives, but from a more extreme position. Phyllis Schlafly's work with STOP ERA kept the Equal Rights Amendment from being ratified. And in Bakke v the United States, affirmative action came under attack.
And the crowning achievement of this movement was the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980, on which, more in the next unit.

Crazy how affirmative action was still around in college admissions up until a year ago. It’s amazing to watch history change around us beyond just listening about it in class or on KZread.

@@diamed9789 Yeah and i think even if AA goes away colleges will still find a way to keep factoring race in admissions. harvard wouldn't suddenly just treat every application equally regardless of race.
