My 14 year old American Shorthair named "Smokey" acts like he's a newborn kitten. From being the runt, to being the largest cat I've ever seen, Smokey weighs in at almost 19 lbs, and still runs outside with the other cats like he's a younging.14 years young and still going strong!

I had an American Shorthair cat for nearly 8 years. I lost him in 2020. He literally was a part of our family. It's been 2 years now and I still miss him so much.

Heh. People didn’t like it because it looked like a street cat. Meanwhile I adopted a newborn streetcat who was abandoned by his mom and HE’S FREAKING ADORABLE!

I definitely have no trouble eating in the same room as my cat. She knows to not knock things over, or bite on wires! She's quite an obedient cat! The letting me sleep in part is super accurate!

I have an American shorthair brown mackerel tabby with some calico orange highlights. She is the best beast: sweet, affectionate, mellow and happy. Round face chubby cheeks big green eyes. The epitome of great cat!

I have a purebred American Shorthair. She's probably the best kitty I've had and I've had a lot. She's social and playful. Loves her.

I adopted my Jimmie as a kitten from the Humane Society. The vet told me that he is an American Shorthair. Pure black and the most gorgeous yellow/green eyes and weighs 13.8 lbs. All muscle. Gentle. Rarely do his claws come out unless it's my pleather automan or dining room chair. Lol

Your videos deserve more views. You put so much thought and effort into them. They are truly professional.

Love love love mine. Found her at two months old. She’s now almost 4 months. Sooo energetic runs and does acrobatics everywhere. But also very loving. She thinks she can scare dogs away by pouncing towards them 😂 only when I’m near by though. Otherwise she finds me first. I love her, her name is Joy.

Very lucky that you American's managed to get your beautiful local shorthair accepted and still bred as a breed in time. I love our European shorthairs, but they're considered your typical domestic cat here as well and no-one breeds them in my country. Too late now unless the Scandinavian lines take off, but those are slightly different again. I like healthy cats that look like cats and have a strong genetic pool behind them, having those bred and socialized by reputable breeders would give advantages that picking up some unknown stray would not. Unfortunately the British shorthairs look nothing like it and are becoming increasingly flat faced, a trend that I absolutely hate in all pet breeding. I can't fathom why any judge ever thought that looked healthy in anything.

I have a adopt American short hair calico. This content is spot on, I was so surprised . All the personality traits describe my cat to the tee. I named her Sunshine Jellybean, she is beautiful and a mix of sweet and spicy like some jellybeans lol love her so much!!!

They are the perfect cat

My cat is so independent i love it. He does like catch large moths and small birds. Catches and kills some almost daily and likes to track them inside and eat them. its kind of gross, especially all the feathers. He does his toilet business outside with the dogs. Doesnt beg for food. Doesn't jump on tables or counters. Super friendly and curious. I've thought about it a lot, he's perfect!

I prefer feral kittens. They're everywhere and once they settle in they become great cats. Just picked up a pair of 8 week old male orange tabby cats. Still need their shots and neutered. Next month.

Yes, adopt a stray. It takes some time and effort to persuade one to trust you, and going from stray to chipped, examined, spayed, and vaxxed costs MORE than $2000, But shorthairs are wonderful companions. Of course, adopting an adult shelter cat is by far the cheapest, and they are also bright, playful, and affectionate. And if you want to do something good for the world, support a TNR program. Cats are very small, vulnerable creatures, and to compensate, have evolved a very high birthrate/ starvation rate. Evolution is stupid. Sometimes it doesn't select for the fittest, but for the most irresponsibly prolific. As is demonstrated by most of the people you meet.

My cat is this breed and I named him Sir Dudley Pippin-Biff aka Duddles😁 He was a rescue, my brother found him almost five years ago while driving on a mountain highway during a storm when he was only a few weeks old! We believe he might have been born on a nearby farm and decided to wander (he still has an insatiable curiosity he's very nosy). I had always wanted a cat so I adopted him as my son haha and he went from a smol, wet and shivering baby to the BIG 18 pound, happy & well-loved boy that he is now😊

my american shorthair is beautiful and he is probably the biggest american shorthair in recorded history he is 20 inches long and still growing so far he is 14 or 15 pounds

I also have an American shorthair but the problem is that he ran away and walks everywhere in Saint-Esprit and if you have any solutions to get him back that would be really good

I am one of those

I need a cat that does not demand to wake me up in the early morning. I am retired and sleep in. Will this breed be good for that and just wait until you wake up on your own? I want a male cat because they are usually less skittish. (Also, I am not about to pay $1000-2000 dollars!)

So I have a female American shorthair. She is so loving and sweet. Everything you talked abt sounds like her. Her name is Zorah I said it the sec I saw her. I go to work for 8 hours a day feed her before and after & spend a 30-60 min a day after work with her is that okay?? Do I need to spend more attention and time with her. She was a kitten stray I picked up 12 days after my childhood cat died. She & I bond incredibly but as a full time worker and side writer idk how much time I should give her

Hi there, it is confusing, b/c not only do American SHs look like DSHs....but at first, AHS were actually *callled* DHS. But they are different: ASH are purebred (breeders track heritage, health, traits, and conform to the breed standard), whereas DSH may be combinations of any breed. My Lynx--point Siamese, which I got from a shelter, is considered a DSH because technically, she's a tabby mix. About 97% of cats in the USA are not purebreds.

So basically an American Shorthair is an offspring of a British shorthair. Just less fat...gotcha.

No way lol my cats wake me up in the morning to feed them. Literally around 7AM, when I used to feed them, now they gotten used to it I guess and wake me up at that time

Cost: I think a cat costs about $2000 a year. The cheapest possible cat, the first year, is an adult shelter cat. But every year after that, food + litter +vet is over $2000. Way cheaper and more affectionate than a human, usually lives 15-25 years. There are lots of humans who want to be dependent on you. Don't do it! Cats and dogs are better.

Always adopt. They need homes, and if they don’t get one, they will be put down. 😢

Breeding American Shorthairs with other breeds is illegal? I need a citation. I can't see why it'd be illegal. It's not like people couldn't still pure-breed American Shorthairs if this was legal. I find that hybridizing certain breeds of cats and dogs can make a very healthy animal with positive aspects of both parent breeds and less negative aspects since the cats gene pool is essentially doubled.
