Sabaton started by trying to release a normal metal album that was not about history, but they were told by the record company that they would not release it until metal became popular again. Eventually, they released their first album, Primo Victoria, which is about history. Attero Dominatus is the title track of their second album.

I think you should react to Hearts of Iron by Sabaton. It's definitely my favorite song by Sabaton. It's about a German general, Walter Wencke, in the last days of World War II who decided to disobey orders to relieve Berlin and decided to instead help evacuate the 9th Army, which was defending Berlin, as well as several civilians.

@@TouchyReactions I can't wait to see it! I think you should react to all the songs on their heroes album. They're all incredible stories. I think you're only missing Smoking Snakes, which is about three heroes from the Brazilian Expeditionary Force during World War 2, Far from the Fame, which is about a Czech pilot, Ballad of Bull, which is about an Australian medic who saved 12 American soldiers by running into a combat zone and carrying them out, and Soldier of Three Armies, which is about a soldier who fought for Finland, Germany, and the US.

Early Sabaton songs have alot of, call it, Latin. Attero is a possessive of: to wear away, with a connotation of destruction. Dominatus is: absolute power, shares a couple roots with Dictator, or literally a sovereign. So you end up with a meaning closer to 'weaken total control' than the contextual 'destroy tyranny', for which there is a phrase 'atteri tyrannis'. I grew up in a part of Italy where Italian Standard and Latin are spoken at about the same frequency.

To note about whats not taught under American exceptionalism, the quality of troops the US faced during the liberation. American forces were often not facing crack German units in high concentrations, they often faced quite poor quality troops. The utter dregs were largely feed to the Soviets as speed bumps and to screen their truly exceptional, motivated and experienced units. One of the 101st/502nds most often told victories was against a shattered unit of panzer grenadiers in retreat from Sword, who scraped up a reinforced platoon and 3 panzers and a relatively well equipped and entrenched company of literal conscripts. They got rolled over by the dogfaces, mostly cause airborne don't fuck around (*yells at wife while she walks by* if you aint airborne, you aint shit). But if you read the reports and the retelling, you'd think they were 3000 of Germanys best, half of the poor sods taken prisoner didnt even speak German

@@mushinbujin Prealpi Venete, is the proper name, but its usually just identified as the Veneto Alps. The very most northern part of Veneto. Small villages in the central mountains frequently speak Latin as their main language aswell, atleast that was the case 20 years ago, imagine enough of the forcing to speak Roman has put an end to that being more than a novelty.

Pirate ship! Sabaton has another song about the Battle of Berlin from the point of view of members of the German army who went "screw that" to their orders to defend Berlin to the last man and instead worked to evacuate civilians. Can't remember the name of the song off the top of my head, though.

ASCotter did an amazing vid for 'Aces in Exile' so I hope that's the one that gets used when you dive into it.

Unfortunately the Wackin 2019 crowd only had about 20% of the energy of the Woodstock 2012 crowd for this song. Doesn't mean this crowd wasn't in it. It's just extremely hard to come close to that Woodstock 2012 crowd.

Puppy! Good doggo 🐶 Many of their WW2 songs are in my top favorites. Primo Victoria, the Last Battle, Attero Dominatus, Resist & Bite, Saboteurs. Pirate Ship Seeing as you've done all but Saboteurs, I now request it! Out of all the songs its story is one of my favorites. Here's a short historical background from Sabaton's website: "The Norwegian Heavy Water Sabotage was a series of action undertaken by Norwegian saboteurs in 1943 at Vemork, Norway, during World War Two to prevent the German nuclear energy project from acquiring heavy water, which could have been used by the Nazis to produce nuclear weapons. In February 1943, following a failed British attempt to destroy the Facility, a team of SOE-trained Norwegian commandos succeeded in destroying the production facility. It was the most successful act of Sabotage in all of WW2 (Text credits: Gregory Sandoz)" Their actions are arguably one of the greatest victories against the Axis. Can you imagine the outcome of WW2 if Hitler had gained nuclear arms?

Aww - What a nice dog! I hope you will react to Saboteur. Not their most famous song, but the story is fantastic.

It's part of my Autobahn playlist in my car.

Yeah, basically in 2012 after recording the Carolus Rex album all of the original members except bassist Par and vocalist Joakim left due to their touring schedule getting too heavy (and eventually formed the band Civil War). Every former band member (that was in the band for over a year) except for pre-2012 guitarist Oskar Montellius agreed to play with the current members for the 20th Anniversary concert headlining Wacken 2019 to celebrate the band's history and how far they have come. It was a great show! Both sets of members played together for the entire second half of the show, mostly old songs, but also some new songs. As for the evolution of their music, yeah they made a self released album/demo called "First For Fight" in 2001 that was eventually remastered and released officially as "Metalizer" in 2007 (After "Primo Victoria" in 2005 and "Attero Dominatus" in 2006). That is the only album that is not history related and the band generally does not play any songs from it live (with the exception of the song "Masters Of The World", which is usually played over the speakers when the band is taking a bow and leaving the stage at the end of a concert).

Festival in Wacken was Sabaton's 20-th anniversary concert. They used two stages, and invited all their former members to participate. They felt, that all those guys contributed to bands success. Song is epic. Soviets lost the most soldiers, that's true, but partially it was due to Stalin's disregard for human life. He knew, that any number of soldier's can be replaced from his " human resources ". That said, it's human life, no matter what reasons, and Nazis had even bigger disregard for those who were not "übermensh" as they said. The atrocities they committed... Well, the song "The final solution" speaks about it. I recommend it. Pirate ship ( always watch the whole thing, because I like your approach to every song )

I must admit, I'm regretting not taking history in school, but since I discovered and started Sabaton in 2008 I did enough studying to catch up (or so I think till their next song drops anyways). Let's keep this pirateship rocking! BTW Sabaton have a trilogy of songs: Metal Machine (lyrics made up of out of song names) Metal Crüe (lyrics made up out of band names) Metal Ripper (lyrics made up out of song lyrics) Piscator's channel have some great video's of these songs, they are not about military history at all, but it's a fun trilogy to do as well...

You know, Sabaton hasn't done any songs about pirate ships. The closest they've gotten is probably Bismarck, and that only by virtue of it being a ship. If you want pirates, Alestorm would probably be the way to go.

Spaking of older classics, Wolfpack is an absolute banger. Amd while on the topic of the allied armies stopping in the Elbe river, you definetly want to check out the song Hearts of Iron, speaking about the german army refusing Hitler's direct orders, instead trying to save as many civilians as possible from the advancing Soviets (i feel a bit silly now that i see Indy also explains this in the video) Do the views actually drop off when the song part of the reaction is over? I cant imagine not sticking by for the history, or even clicking on a video with the intent to only watch half of it.

Probably already said, but "Dominatus" is Latin, so it would be Dohmehnahtoos. IDK but most people think that "u" in Latin is the same as the modern English version.

Roughly, "Attero Dominatus" = "Wear down the oppressor" and "Denique Interimo" = "Smashed at last." Direct translations are tricky because of nuances. "Primo Victoria" for example, is not really "First victory" but more like "Victory matters more than anything else."
