Jefferson didn't remove his anti slavery clause from the declaration out of fear. It was removed by vote because everything in the declaration had to be unanimously approved by all 13 colonies. 3 colonies voted against it. But even then, everybody expected slavery in America to be abolished within 20 years. And it would have been except that the cotton gin was invented which made slavery much more profitable. Suddenly those southern slave owners had real financial reason to keep slavery around.

@@UncleForHire that's what that means. The Continental Congress had agreement that the deceleration had to be unanimous and with his entire diatribe and grivences against slavery was rejected before it ever got a vote. James Madison was actually anti-slavery as well, and in writing the Constitution he intentionally never usues the word slave because he knew if he did the fight to end slavery could be considered unconstitutional. So he made the 3/5 Compromise and used different wording. Very crafty men who had a massive burden on their shoulders.

If you wanna watch something awesome look up the HBO miniseries John Adams. Paul Giamatti plays him and it shows from the Boston Massacre til his death on July 4th, 1826, 50 years exactly from the Declaration.. It covers the political/diplomatic aspects over the time. (Fun fact: His lifelong frenemie Thomas Jefferson died the same day. ) Another awesome show is TURN: Washington’s Spies. That one focused on the war and particularly the intelligence/spying. It’s def one of my favorite shows of all time but I’m a huge history nerd .

I'm not 100% certain but if I remember correctly most studies claim that only 40% of people were patriots and only 20% were loyalists with remaining 40% being neutral. It's important to remembet that farmers have no time for politics since they were mainly preoccupied with surviving the frontier, the winter, the natives and growing their crops.

I mean it's a bit unfair in the way that he's a history teacher and not just someone who's interested in this and watching what his viewers suggest the most, but I get your point, he's a great guy who as you describe, provides context and in some ways "unsimplifies" the subject. He has a special place in this reaction culture, but I wouldn't condemn others who just want to learn or something, because having different ethnicities or cultures react to this kinda stuff is actually pretty cool and brightens the mind imo (I'm from Germany so even Mr. Terry himself is a welcome foreign/cultural opionion). For valuable background information I'll always turn to Mr. Terry if he's got something on it, just like many students probably do when they need an overview with context for the upcoming test. That's in some way the bless and curse of internet culture, he gets so much positive response out of this because it connects and helps, but I guarantee you there are many teachers like him, just without the recognition. Oh well, that was kinda long for an 11 month old comment but I felt like it

Really Nice to see a Reaction Channel that isn't just someone sitting in a chair for 20 minutes with an occasional grin, but instead a person expanding upon the content with his own commentary (what a reaction channel should be- people reacting to content and sharing their thoughts related to watched content). I love History and I'm very happy that channels like Oversimplified exist, giving engaging, fun, but also very informative content. Those two videos gave the important info, some fun facts as well, and did it in a way that is easy to remember what happened and that makes you interested more in the subject. It's like those Car Magazines, where they are not always 100% correct and do get some things mixed up, but they get people invested in a subject so that they look for more information on their own. Also, the fact that You are a Highschool History teacher makes the commentary more engaging IMO, because it's always good to hear what people who have more knowledge in the subject have to say. Great video. I am Definitely subscribing and I can't wait for more :)

History is such a fascinating subject, and when a teacher shares his enthusiasm it makes all the difference in the world. I had some very good history teachers in my life and a couple very (very) bad ones, and boy, how much more I would have enjoyed the topic if I had had a teacher who is engaged in the subject and lets it be seen by his pupils! Got a question! If America was a British colony, doesn't that mean that Americans have British ancestry? You get my idea, in the year of the Independence war, didn't the Americans fought technically their own people? (If this is terribly wrong then sorry, I'm from East Europe)

  • @shutout951

Tldr; yes they largely had British Ancestry, but they were largely criminals and rejects, so they didn't care about being British. At this point in History, you're right. Most people in the Colonies had British Ancestry. The white minorities were some French, Swedes, Dutch, and Irish, but their numbers were insignificant, less than 10% of the white population. For the most part, they were fighting their own people. From an ethnocentric viewpoint, you're right. This doesn't make sense. The reasons why they did this were numerous, but they are all different versions of the British ostracizing (since you're from eastern Europe, and I'll assume English isn't your native language, ostracize means socially remove from your society) different groups and more or less banishing them to the Colonies. Here are the stories: Georgia was started by a British Nobleman looking to start a colony for Debt prisoners. That is, for people who owed too much money and were sent to prison. The Carolinas are an exception to the rule of ostracism, but they were set up as a colony for those who loved personal liberty, so they believed the British laws were insufferable. Virginia was the first colony, so the people there were most removed from British culture, and, although they fancied themselves British, they were largely excluded from British high society. For this reason, they foresaw losing a lot of their colonial wealth if taxation continued, and they didn't feel as if the British were really their people. Maryland was started by a Catholic Nobleman because Catholicism was illegal in Britain, and he wanted to practice Catholicism. Delaware was started by people from Massachusetts. I'll explain that when I get to Massachusetts. Pennsylvania was set up by the Quakers, a religious minority who left Britain because they were being mistreated by the British Crown. Their colony bad religious freedom. New York was inherited from the Dutch after a war. It was mostly farmland. There were also other ambivalent minorities here. Connecticut, Rhode island, and Delaware were all break away colonies from Massachusetts. These four colonies were populated by Puritans who were banished from England after Oliver Cromwell visited a terrible rule on England in the name of puritanism, and that sect was outlawed. The colonies broke from Massachusetts for religious and political reasons, but they were culturally similar. I'm not sure about new Hampshire, and I might be missing something about new York and Delaware. The British made the mistake of populating a colony with people it wanted gone, and these people knew that the British didn't want them. There was limited affection here. This is why they fought a war with the mother country.

I know a lot of British loyalists in the US ended up fleeing to New Brunswick... Which also made New Brunswick very worried at the possibility of America invading them, so they were pretty easily in favor of Canada's confederation...

I've only recently found and fell in love with the Oversimplified channel and happened upon this and the part 1 reaction video of yours. I've only watched a few reaction videos and with the exception of one other channel, I despise them. However, I appreciate the way you add your commentary to this video all while maintaining and encouraging respect for the original creator. One thing I would like to request from you- your commentary is very interesting but so many times there were things you said that I couldn't hear. I'm really interested in hearing your input and responses so would you consider either subtitling your comments or reduce the sound of the original video so we can hear you? When you pause the video - your commentary is fine but there were several times in both videos where you had a comment or input but it was short so you didn't pause. Subtitles or captions during those times would be really great. Just a suggestion. Again, I appreciate the way you have done this. Thanks for the video!

Just so you know the only thing watching the ads baked into the video does is increase their videos average watch time if it's at the end. If the ad is at the beginning there is literally no way to tell how many people watched it. In both cases they can only get very rough estimates really. They can however track how many people use the person affiliate code if he has one which may have a direct impact on how much money the person is paid (which is a lump sum per certain amount of videos along with views on said videos).

I think review videos would be good also. If you have already seen a video, review instead of reaction. My enjoyment of your videos is due to the additional information you provide. It enhances the videos. I think oversimplified Hitler videos would be a good choice and would complement the WW2 videos nicely.
