"who's the best team" - because there's a salary cap and draft, it's hard for a team to stay at the top indefinitely. A club playing really well might be able to go back-to-back or even a "three-peat" - most recently Hawthorn in 2013 - 2015. But in 2021 they finished 14th, while Melbourne won in 2021 for the first time since 1964... The greatest ever run was Collingwood's four-year run from 1927-1930. They've also by far been runners-up the most times (27 times they've lost the Grand Final...). My team Carlton's not won since 1995. "what's the most populous city" Greater Sydney is the most populous city in Australia, with Greater Melbourne very close behind (some calculations have metropolitan Melbourne *just* ahead of Sydney as of 2021, it's pretty much a dead heat at the moment). Australian Rules came out of Victoria so there's more Melbourne sides, but it's very popular in South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia. In 1990 the Australian Football League was formed, with the former "Victorian Football League" returned to a true state competition as a feeder league as in the other states. The women's national competion started in 2017, with all 18 clubs at AFL level having both a mens and womens team from 2023.

Sydney has the largest population 3. You have to kick the ball to score, if it comes of your hands or you run through, it’s a behind. Hopes this helps

Ok, to answer a few of your questions, yes, a defending player can attempt to smother a kick. And a goal must come from a kick. If any player touches the ball before it crosses the goal line, then it is a behind, regardless of whether they're a defending or attacking player. And you're right, there's no end zone. Any player can attempt a goal from anywhere. Any distance, any angle, on the run or from a standing start. Obviously, forwards are the best goalkickers but midfielders and defenders can have a go if they find themselves in a good position to do so. They just don't practice goalkicking as much so are usually not as accurate.

You can smother the ball from a kick, BUT if the person has taken a mark, anyone from the other team can stand on the spot where the person marked it to try and “defend” the ball and can not move an inch from that spot! And don’t even get me started on another player from the opposing team entering within 10 metres of where the person is trying to take a kick from a mark lol I bloody love this game, but trying to teach it to a newbie is 🤯 hahaha

Sydney and Melbourne both have populations approaching 5 million, with Sydney at present a fraction bigger. Melbourne remains the sporting capital of the country. It was the birthplace of Aussie Rules in 1858. It has the biggest and oldest cricket ground (1854) which doubles as the headquarters of the AFL (Aussie rules and Cricket are closely intertwined - the large oval shape of Aussie Rules grounds is no accident, they are also Cricket grounds, and Aussie Rules was invented to provide Cricket players with a way to keep fit over the winter). By the way, the State of Victoria, of which Melbourne is the capital, came into existence in 1851 when the Port Philip District separated from New South Wales as an autonomous self-governing colony. By 1860 Melbourne had a University (1851), it's own brand of football, and was incredibly rich thanks to the discovery of fabulous gold fields only a few miles to the north. Those goldfields also led to an armed insurrection (the Eureka Stockade) and the true beginning of Australian Democracy. It is not often enough remembered that the first man to be tried for capital crimes arising from the Eureka Stockade was a black American gold miner. No doubt the authorities thought he would be an easy mark and that the many others charged would be convicted too. However, the jury found him not guilty, despite the mass of evidence against him. He was carried on the shoulders of the crowd through the streets of Melbourne being cheered all the way. The subsequent trials collapsed. As far as sport popularity is concerned (Team sports, not horse racing, trotting and the like): Summer: Cricket Winter: 1 Aussie Rules, by a long way; 2 Rugby League 3 Rugby Union, Soccer Participation: There is virtually no sport that you can't play in Australia if you want to badly enough. I'm not sure about that Mongolian game played on horseback with a dead calf for a ball, though. When I was in my teens and twenties the top winter sport for participation was (Field) Hockey. I played for two clubs. Essendon fielded about 10 teams in various senior grades every Saturday, Melbourne University had about 15 teams covering all the grades several times over. In all those years, though, I probably wasn't watched by more than 1000 people in total; just the odd player's girlfriend or a passing dog-walker or two. The main interest at half-time was to catch up with the AFL scores in that day's games. When I played hockey at high school there was nobody in charge; we organised our own games with opposing schools and for away games we had a "responsible adult" travelling with us to make sure that nothing untoward went on. There was no Coach, we did that ourselves. None of the sports played there had a coach, though the PE teacher might assume that role for footy or cricket. American-style pop-star coaches in high school and college were non-existent. The only coaches whose names were known to the public were those of the professional AFL clubs, who were all retired super-star players, and while they might get interviewed occasionally none ever had his own show on radio or TV. "Coach" was and is never used as a title. In summer I played Cricket in the, believe it or not, Essendon and Broadmeadows District Protestant Churches Cricket Association, for Essendon Baptists. That church, like most others had several tennis courts on it's land right next door to the church and that's where kids often started to learn tennis. I occasionally played basketball for them too. Aussie Rules was out of the question because the Essendon Baptists footy team was of incredibly high standard and a direct recruiting source for the VFL/AFL professional clubs, particularly Essendon. Now you'll never have to wonder again if they play Cricket in Australia.

When you’ve got the ball anyone on the field can tackle you and take you to the ground. If your running with the ball and have a chance to pass it off or kick it but you don’t and get tackled, you will lose the ball and the other team gets possession. But if you’ve got the ball and kick it to a teammate and they catch it he gets a free kick and no one can tackle him until he has his kick. With scoring you can only kick it in for it to count as a goal, you can run it in and handball it in but it will only count for 1 point 🤙

As these stats were from 2019 though I assume that Australian football may have climbed the ranks since the introduction of the women's leagues. The sport you missed too is netball, which is the fourth-highest team sport with regards to participation rates in Australia.

A kick = ball contacts below the knee. You can only score a goal via kicking and it cannot be touched by another body part on the way or any part of opposition player. Anything else would = a behind. Throwing the ball = free kick for opposition. You can usually defend a ball by hitting it and that isn't counted as throwing. Smothering a kick is a valid move. You can move the ball in any direction too. Once in possession of the ball, you can legally pass it on via kick or handball. Most of anything else = incorrect disposal = free kick for opposition. If you are tackled you must attempt to dispose of the ball correctly, otherwise = free kick for opposition. You only have leeway for no prior opportunity (eg received the ball and get tackled 0.5s later) or, the tackle is illegal.

Hey mate, all goals must be kicked through the central posts. They can bounce along the ground but must go through clean, if a defender touches the ball and it still goes through the middle it doesn’t count as a goal, just one point. Sydney is usually more populated than Melbourne but it can be hard to keep track of. And Canberra is our capital like the US has Washington DC. Also the Grand Final was played last night. It’s is usually played in the Melbourne Cricket Ground, but because of the COVID situation in Victoria, the state where Melbourne is, it was played in Optus Stadium in Perth, Western Australia. Which is the newest stadium in the country. Last thing, each team has 18 players on the field, so 36 altogether. Cheers mate 🇦🇺

Australia is split by football codes. Aussie Rules is predominantly followed in Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia - but the national league is spread (almost) all across the states, whereas the national Rugby league teams are just in Queensland and New South Wales, plus one team from Victoria (Melbourne). Aussie Rules is most followed in terms of attendances, but cricket is followed everywhere and is next most supported, and by far the predominant summer sport. Rugby comes after that a reasonable bit behind. Then all the other sports, soccer, basketball etc. are a fair way behind the big three. Aussie Rules is often described as a combo of other sports, but has been around since the 1850s predating most of them, which makes it the oldest codified football game in the world ... yet it is hardly known outside of Australia. Yes, no end zone. Aussie Rules is a 360 degree game. The object is to kick goals. The game play is not unlike other 360 degree games, freeform like soccer, hockey or even basketball. Yes, throwing the ball is not permitted. Once a player is in possession, the only legal disposals are a hand pass (also called a hand ball) or a kick. A throw will result in a turnover and free kick to the other side. Sydney is the most populous city, but Melbourne is following up closely behind. You can only get a goal if the ball is kicked through the two large upright posts. If it is touched (even if kicked) or knocked through between any of the goal posts, by either team, it only scores 1pt.

If the ball is taken over the goal line by an opposition player ( Usually as a defensive move) It is called a "Rushed Behind" 1 point again but potentially preventing a goal being scored, because on the field if you are tackled, you may give away a free kick in front of goal. You are allowed to "Smother" the ball with your arms or hands (Sometimes with your face) and this too can prevent a goal being scored as the ball, if it travels over the goal line is considered "Touched" It's a spectacular, tough sport, especially at the elite level.

So if it comes off any other body part or another player from the other team tries to block it and the ball comes off them before going through the goal posts, it'll only be 1 point.

You can not throw the ball, it has to be hit from the hand using your fist. When looking at the score, it shows 3 numbers; these are Goals, Behinds and Points. To work out how scoring works, you have to remember that each Goal is worth six points and each Behind is worth one point; therefore 20 Goals(×6=120) is added to the 10 Behinds(×1=10) and gives you the Points of 130. If the ball is touch before passing through the posts, it is called 'rushed and is worth one point.

Your questions are probably answered, but here you are anyway. Yes, you can move in to smother a kick as long as the player has not received a free (unimpeded) kick, which is achieved by catching the ball from a kick, or given to a player who has been fouled by another. Yes, you can then take possession of the ball. It's a very free-flowing game. No, you may not throw the ball. It must ALWAYS be struck, by hand or foot, to pass it. If you handball into the goal or run through it with the ball, it is one point, instead of the 6 points you get from a kick (as long as no other player touches the ball before it goes over the line). All players will attempt to kick for the 6-point goal. No one tries to score for their team by handballing or running the ball through (though it can happen by accident). No, no end zone. Who the best teams are changes over time, and you will get various answers depending on who you are speaking to - even if they're doing their best to be unbiased. Sydney, Geelong, Collingwood, Melbourne, Bulldogs, Richmond, Brisbane Lions and maybe Fremantle are some of the best teams right now. Melbourne is where the game was formally started in the 1850s, and AFL is likely derived from an indigenous game. It is the oldest code of football in the world. Soccer is widely played in schools across Australia and has a national league, but is far less attended and screened than AFL. Cricket and Rugby are major team sports in Australia. AFL still is the most attended of these. Sydney is the most populous city (5.3 million), followed by Melbourne (5 million). Canberra is a small city with 400,000 people. It was built in order to be the capital of the country, to avoid any of the established states; capitals also being the national capital. Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth all have larger populations than Canberra. Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory are the states/territories that don't field football teams for AFL. Western Australia (capital: Perth), South Australia (Adelaide), New South Wales (Sydney) and Queensland (Brisbane) all field 2 teams each for the AFL. Victoria (Melbourne) fields 10 teams.

Australia's 2 most popular sports are Aussie football followed by Rugby which are played in winter. I think a lot of Americans think Rugby is our biggest sport because they mostly know of Sydney, which is a rugby city. The majority of other cities in Australia follow Aussie football. It's similar to how Texas is a football state and Los Angeles is a basketball city. Cricket is the third biggest sport in Aus and is a summer sport and followed all over the country. Cricket is more unusual though because it's following is mostly with the national team rather than franchises. The pinnacle of Aussie cricket is "the Ashes" series against England, which is a 5 game series. It dates back to the 1800s I would say those three make up the top tier of Australian sport, with the next tier being basketball, soccer, etc.

To score a goal the ball has to be kicked through, rather than being hand-balled or carried through. If the ball is touched by another player's hands after you've kicked it, but still goes between the goal posts, it's known as a rushed behind and is only worth 1 point as opposed to 6

Another question you asked was if a player is kicking the ball can another player come across and smother the ball and run off with the ball and bounce it and that answer is yes they can

the idea is to kick a score, but if it goes through any of the posts having been touched (either by opposition or by the hand of your own team), it's a point (e.g. if a player is trying to gather a ball that has been kicked toward goal and fumbles it, they will be awarded a point if it spills through their goal). So if you run it through, it's considered "touched" (point), but equally if a defender manages to touch it the score is awarded a point (even if it goes through the middle). I've watched a lot of people reacting, and increasingly I think watching a game or two (not highlights) is the best way to get an idea. As I'm sure others have mentioned, the mighty Dees (I might be biased) just won their first premiership since 1964. There's all sorts of mechanisms (salary cap, draft....) that try to keep the competition even, and it's very hard for teams to have prolonged success in the modern game. Typically teams seem to have a cycle where they'll spend a few years struggling and then spend 5 or 10 years making finals fairly consistently. The last decade has been dominated by Richmond, Geelong and Hawthorn (with Sydney, West Coast and Collingwood featuring regularly).

ranking our sports: 1. AFL 2. Cricket 3.Netball 4. Rugby (more so if you live in the east) 5. Basketball 6. Swimming(almost all children learn how to swim at school swimming lessons) 7. Athletics/ running 8. soccer(while it is very popular among growing children there isnt many teams to play for and so youd most likely have to go overseas)

We couldn't decide which city out of Sydney and Melbourne was the 'best' in terms of population and attraction and should be our capital city, so we created Canberra and placed it right in between the two. Also, yes, you must kick the ball through the goal to score.

The tigers have won three premierships recently 2017,19, 20 and have changed the way the game is played. You can score from a handball and would only be one point so you wouldn't do that you need to kick it for a major (6pts). Handballs are for passing to a team mate that is in a better position to work towards goal or a rushed behind at the oppositions goal line to prevent them kicking a goal (you can only rush it through if under pressure from the opposition, otherwise they will be awarded a free shot on goal) . You can run as far as u like as long as you bounce the ball within or at 15 meters and don't get tackled. If you are tackled with the ball and you have had prior opportunity to dispose of it then it is a free kick to the apposing team at that spot.

you can block the kicker from kicking while there is no protected zone, you can pick up the ball and run however you cant bump or run there the two big uprights, you must only kick the ball through the big up rights to get the major score. as seen in the comments there is no best team it depends during the trade period, draft and the team salary cap, also the next populated city in Australia is probably Melbourne because they have about ten teams. if you have anymore questions just reply to comment

Answers to a few questions: - The only way to score a goal (6 points) is by kicking it through the middle post. You can run through the goals with the ball or hand pass it through and get a behind but thats not very common. - you can 'block' someones kick as a defender and that is called 'smothering' and is very effective. - Answer to the best teams, it varies dramatically year to year. Richmond dominated for a few years though.

To score a goal you have to kick the ball without it being touched between leaving your foot and the ball getting completely past the goal line. Anything else that crosses the goal line between the outside posts in any other way is a behind.

Canberra is the National Capital. Melbourne is the State Capital of Victoria, and along with Sydney(Capital of New South Wales) are the two most populous cities; followed closely by Brisbane(Capital of Queensland) and Perth(Capital of Western Australia). The other capital cities are Hobart(Tasmania), Adelaide(South Australia) and Darwin(Northern Territory).

A key part of the game is is the kick and "mark". If the ball is is kicked over 15 metres and is caught without being touched a "mark" is awarded. This means you get a free kick.
