There is an english guy Nimh that does videos on loads of sports from around the world. Despite some mispronounciations of some Irish terms, he does a good summary of the sports rules and nuances. I grew up in Canada, and one of my friends was a massive lacrosse fan, and he used to talk about lacrosse being the fastest field sport. I disagreed and said hurling was. This was before the modern internet and youtube etc. The main Canadian sporting channel used to show the finals of the championships in Gaelic Football(the other big Gaelic sport) and Hurling a few weeks after they were played, and he watched the hurling and phoned me up to concede defeat, and what blew his mind even more, was that many of the players didn't wear helmets back then.(its become standard in the last few decades) A couple of other little tidbits.... the Gaelic Athletic Association is actually quite active in the US, in particular around Boston, NY and Chicago as you could imagine with the Irish populations of those cities. And in the 1904 St. Louis Olympics, Hurling and Gaelic Football were actually demostration sports, with matches played between various US GAA clubs. RTÉ the Irish national tv station had. a show a few years ago, called the Toughest Trade, where they would send a Hurler or Gaelic footballer to play some other sport and have a player from that sport come to Ireland to Hurling or Football. For example sent one Hurler off to Vancouver to play hockey with the Canucks. In one episode they sent a hurler off to play baseball. Forget where in the US. But the lad was playing in the outfield, and complained that the glove was just a hinderance, and would be catching the ball in his bare hand like he would in hurling, and the rest of the players were just amazed by how good he was at it, without injuring himself.

you asked about the leagues well its very complicated because its amateur and no contracts players depending on how good they are play with there village team ,college team if they are in college, and the elite level which is to play for the county. For simplicity i will stick with the county. The main competition is the Liam McCarthy cup this is divided into Munster and Leinster championship. Munster is the best in terms of attendance as i said in another comment but the teams are as good in Leinster they are 5 teams in Munster they play round robin 4 games ,the first two qualify for the Munster final ,the third place team stays in and plays a preliminary quarterfinal against the finalists from the lower McDonagh cup which is not a formality Liam McCarthy cup teams have gone home with the tail between there legs and the last two are eliminated from the competition. Leinster is the same except they are 6 teams. The provincial winners go automatically into the semifinal ,the losing finalists into the quarterfinals where they meet the prelim winners. Then there's the semifinals and then final which always sells out 82000 every year. Hope that's clear

It was croke park you were at in 2007 as the other main stadium AVIVA/landsdowne rd was being redeveloped.Rugby and soccer were played in croke park at that time because they had no other stadium normally croke park is reserved for gaelic football and hurling and that was the first time they were allowed to be played there.Rugby was played there since this year as the AVIVa was unavailable as it was hosting a major soccer European final .That was the first time since 2010 that rugby was played there. You may think my use of soccer is because you are american not the case soccer is often used in ireland to refer to Association football and Football meaning Gaelic football. It depends on region and favourite sport so its not quite like america and context usually helps to distinguish the sports. For example if someone plays football for dublin that means gaelic football because there is no such thing as the dublin soccer team whereas if they play football for ireland thats soccer because Gaelic football doesn't have anirish national team there is a team of gaelic footballers that plays a hybrid game with the AFL but thats not gaelic football as such.

The BAT is called a HURL and the Ball is called a SLITAR,made of Leather and can cause a lot of damage if you get hit with it. It is one of if not the fastest sports ever. If you get back to visit arrange to go to a match it will scare the living f##k out of you 😂😂😂😂😂

it was a good first video to react to in terms of the historical and cultural significance, but it doesn't give an indication of how fast and popular it is.This years munster championship played in the southern region of the republic of ireland will have an attendance of over 300 000 which is a quarter of the population of munster and from only 11 games. The Irish language he refered to is what you americans call gaelic but we call it irish. Game or Match is used interchangeably for example the tv programe that broadcasts live intercounty matches is the sunday game and the saturday whereas if you attended a game you would probably say i was at the match. The game usually lasts 60 minutes but the intercounty senior games are 70 minutes The last five minutes of 2014 all ireland or the last 15minutes of 2013 final are well worth a watch. In terms of rules ninh ly hurling explained is probably the best though as he is an englishmanhis pronounciations are off a bit and there have been quite a few rule changes since he made the video its still good. Fenway park and wrigley field were used for exhibition matches, but as these fields are much smaller a special format called super 11s was created

@@eoinhudson5073 I stand corrected, though by professional I really mean At the top level. I know money comes in the picture to some degree, just not the amounts that constitutes a career. Uniforms and equipment, especially custom, requires money to make, even if it comes from sponsors or patreons. Though a field can be borrowed, as long as their design isn't too different. There is at least one stadium in the United States Of America where Baseball and Football are played, which is easiest to see in the early Fall, when their seasons overlap.

@@bartonbagnes4605 Hurling and gaelic football(GAA) have to have their own pitches they can't borrow from other codes like soccer and rugby as the pitches are too small. It actually works the other way around soccer and rugby use GAA pitches but not that often for historical reasons as the codes didn't get on until the the late noughties, but rugby games have been played in GAA stadiums recently.Soccer is mostly an urban game in ireland and rugby though very popular as a spectator sport,it has much less participation than gaelic sports with the result that GAA pitches are more common and they are owned by the GAA either directly or by individual GAA clubs. There is no such thing as in other parts of europe as the local authority leasing out the pitch the GAA own all the fields they play on in ireland.Basically most of the money made goes back into facilities. When gaelic games are played abroad usually they have to accept reduced players on a team and play on soccer ,rugby, baseball and AF fields, exception being countries where cricket is popular like Australia full GAA matches can be played as the cricket pitch is big enough to accomodate Gaelic games.
