A gentle reminder; this is Falkirk, not Falkland. But Falkland's in Scotland too, has a palace, and is the ancestral home of Johnnie Cash (not the palace, the place). And not the Falkland Islands either...they are in the South Atlantic off the coast of Argentina. That's a whole other story, with another Scottish link (the Scots Guards).

Again I am 'late to the party' as just woke up (not felt good today) but just heard Charlie's intro and came to say, not the Falkland wheel, but the 'Falkirk Wheel'. (Pronounced 'Fall_kirk') 😊 Thank-you.

The Kelpies were modeled on two Clydesdale horses named Duke and Baron, if you go on line you can see the likeness as the creator Andy Scott the horses and the Kelpies were all photographed together. I remember watching the progress as I drove home from work in the evenings . They certainly are an engineering marvel and well worth a visit .👍

I live in the next county to Falkirk. The Kelpies are part of a large park, nature reserve and the canal too. Its a beautiful place and a great day out in the summer. Standing next to the Kelpies make you feel so small.

Thanks! I was going to mention this too... they don't stand in isolation. I visited a couple of years ago, by train from Edinburgh and then the bus from Falkirk. This meant walking from the bus through the park, which has many differing sections. I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon there and would recommend it to anyone!

You can’t react to Scottish stuff without doing massed pipes.. ‘Bagpipes Bands performing "Amazing Grace" LIVE’ is a good one. Much love💙🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

There’s a fairly recent statue/installation in Port Glasgow to shipbuilding and it’s a stylisation of two men with massive hammers building a ship. It’s known locally as The Skelpies because the men are skelping (a Scottish word for hitting) the ship with their hammers. It’s a rather breathtaking piece of art that is right by the River Clyde and almost right next to the only remaining Shipyard in that area (a sad state of affairs considering there was probably half a dozen shipyards between there and the neighbouring town to the west when I was a kid).

If you're into quirky Scottish stuff, why not look into the statue of the Duke of Wellington which stands outside the GOMA (Glasgow Museum of Modern Art) near the main square (George Square). The equestrian statue has worn a traffic cone on its head for the last twenty years or so, in spite of numerous attempts by the authorities to remove it. It is now a feature of Glasgow city centre and celebrates, we think, the irreverent and rebellious culture of our city.

You mentioned the colour change on the Kelpies. This is often done for special events, Christmas, Valentines etc but mostly it’s done to support Charities. The Kelpies are in a huge area of parkland beside the canal and this is used for events to support charities and the enjoyment of the local people. What was not mentioned was that large Clydesdale Horses were used, before motor power, to tow barges along the canals. These sculptures also pay tribute to them.

Falkirk or original spelling Fawkirk simply meant a multi coloured stone church where kirk means church and faw derived for speckled stone. Falkirk, pronounced Fall kirk is the anglicised spelling of the towns name. Thank you for your review of both the Falkirk Wheel and the Kelpies, both outstanding examples of recent creativity. Many thanks.

Saw the kelpies last year. They are awesome to look at a tribute to the canal horses that used to pull the barges. It's worth seeing.

Scotland has several great objects apart from the Kelpies and The Falkirk Wheel. Many engineering pieces have been built to allow people to get around this mountainous and remote country. For the railways to cover the country some incredible feats of engineering have been built. Northern Scotland was inaccessible north of Edinburgh. The Firth of Fourth Railbridge was built, sounds like an odd collection of numbers, a firth is a water channel, the fourth is the name of the channel. The bridge is a 8,094 ft long cantilever bridge constructed in 1882 and is about 361 ft above water level and carries the railway line from Edinburgh to Inverness & Aberdeen. Another great waterway is the Caledonian Canal, from Fort William to Inverness via the famed Loch Ness. Carries fishing boats, pleasure boats and small sea going craft. Built by Thomas Telford so commercial craft, especially during the Napoleonic Conflict. It was a lot quicker and safer than using deep sea and hazardous trip around the very north.
