As someone who has grown up in Sydney, the New Years Eve fireworks get better every year. Everyone needs to see them live once in their lifetime.

Ryan, we are Aussies, mate. We know how to wow the world and leave them speechless, especially when it comes to the Sydney NYE celebrations.

It's one family owned and operated business that runs the show. They spend about 11 months planning and organising this event every year. Once one NYE show is down they start planning for next year. They're the best in the world.

They’ve literally won awards, beating out Chinese companies, which is where fireworks were basically invented so we’re proud of them. They do Perth’s Australia Day fireworks as well, though it’s a problematic day, until a solution is found the show is going to continue I think, then they’ll move it to the appropriate date. Considering at every turn WA has tried to secede from Australia, & the fact that they had reservations joining federation in the first place it’s pretty ironic that we choose Australia Day to do our main Fireworks display

It’s better than dropping a shiny ball in freezing temperatures. It’s a Summer evening on the shores of a beautiful harbour, which reflects the fireworks. Not too shabby.

Pretty sure the 6.2 mil was just for the fireworks not including labour just to be clear! Awesome show either way I was there this year :)

7 million dollars and 8 tonnes of fireworks is the answer. Watched by an estimated 425 million people around the world.

There is no better place in the world to watch the NYE fireworks than Sydney Harbour. I say that as a Sydney sider but also have seen in the New year in many other cities around the world! Not only do we have the most beautiful harbour in the world, with the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, but we also have so many vantage points all around the city on both sides of the bridge. Add to that the fact that it is SUMMER so people can take their picnic rugs and set up early to enjoy the evening without freezing their butts off!

It really is one of the events that Sydney is almost without peer in. I’m in Melbourne and our fireworks shows are great, but they don’t come anywhere close to the grandeur and extravagance of Sydney’s. I often watch the Sydney fireworks show live, and then watch the Melbourne show afterwards on KZread. I’m glad you liked it.

It's a tourism ad, so the government can afford to spend lots on fireworks highlighting the landmarks tourists will travel here to see. They won't spend that sort of money anywhere else, cause there's no payback for it, especially when international coverage is only going to show a single Australian fireworks location

@@competitionglen Sydney has the oldest settlement history, Captain Cook’s landing in Botany Bay, Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge climb, Sydney Botanical Gardens, The Domain, harbour cruises, ferries to Parramatta, Manly, Luna Park (less creepy smile than Melbourne original), many safe harbour beaches, many glorious surf beaches, Taronga Park Zoo, and great shopping. Plus, a very pleasant moderate climate, even in Winter, with only a handful of very cold days.

There’s a reason it’s rated the best fireworks display in the world! 🇦🇺 And we’re tough critics, so each year Sydney City Council has to find some way to go 1 up on the previous year. If you think that’s amazing on screen, it has nothing on being there. I’ve been there twice. Nothing like it anywhere! Apparently over 1 million people were there in person gathered around all the vantage points of the harbour.

I've been involved in a lot of the Sydney City NYE firework events over the last 5 years (as one of the many thousands of emergency services workers covering the event). The amount of time and logistics and planning and coordination that go into it is absolutely insane. Massive chunks of the CBD and harbour are closed off, multiple whole incident management teams are stood up for the event, and thousands upon thousands of emergency services, council and other related workers are spread amongst the area, both before, during and after. The boat you were mentioning around 3 minutes is (from a glance) likely one of the police boats monitoring the river, some of which also have ambulance special operations paramedics on board to respond to any water-based incidents. Civilian boats are restricted from accessing the immediate area around the bridge and the firework barges (for obvious reasons), however outside of those areas you will probably see a ton of both private and commercial boats. They have restrictions about when and where they can go, but damn I bet the commercial operators would make a fortune. Your question about the cost at just prior to 5min, according to news reports, the estimated cost was around 6.2 million AUD for the fireworks (approx 4.1 million USD). There were approximately 8.5 tonnes of fireworks along with a further 80000 other pyrotechnic effects plus all the lighting In regards to the music (6min), it has massive media coverage and has arrangements with TV and radio media. I believe this year it was ABC for TV and KIIS1065 for radio, so they basically have the radio station playing the music in sync, so effectively anyone with a radio (or speakers setup at venues) can play the music in time to the fireworks, and then ABC airs the fireworks live on TV with the music playing with it.

As a person that loves watching the Sydney NYE Fireworks, I’ve always wanted to know the logistics and costs. Great description and information. Pretty proud of our fireworks. As i made my way back home after the fireworks on the 1st of Jan, I did notice all the people you mentioned behind the scenes. I also noticed all the set up that was happening leading up to the event. I can’t imagine what you guys go through to make it such a huge event for us. Thank you 🙏🏽

The only ships I know of thats allowed to be pretty close to the fireworks that not emergency services is the Harbour-of-Life Parade ships and those have some big prices when it comes to being aboard those ships for the night because those are the Sydney Heritage fleet and charter vessels. The James Craig is usually in that group or off on the other side of the harbour with its tug boats depending on the year.

Sydney is the first major fireworks display in the year. Yes, it costs a fortune, but how much is the worldwide publicity for Australia, and combining it with fun and excitement, worth ? I think it’s genius!

New Zealand is starting to compete a little now. They need to increase the fireworks WAY more to get even close to matching, but they have the advantage in the earlier display time. They could take us out if they really wanted to

The waterfall is what we call that firework at the end that comes off the bridge and it’s the most iconic part every year!

When you realise most cruise ships can sail under the bridge and the fireworks waterfall is filling the entire space below the bridge, that's a lot of fireworks.

There is an Exclusion Zone on NYE. NO Maritime movements after 2200 .

We did the harbour boat last year...what you see on screen is nothing compared to being there. It's a mind blowing experience...it's a MUST do.

Thousands travel to Sydney from overseas to experience this. Don't forget it is summer here so a nice time to watch around the Harbour.

We booked a year in advanced to get a room at the Pier One hotel on the harbour, coming from Japan to watch the NYE fireworks. We have seen it many times on TV before, but to see it live, was jaw dropping. Our Tokyo bay fireworks is a drop of rain compared to the Aussies in Sydney.

Are U actually Japanese or born in Australia & moved to Japan? Coz i think it's a tad crazy but bloody brilliant at the same time. That's how world famous our Sydney's NYE Fireworks, the best in the world. Melbourne likes to try & compete coz of our 2 states rivalry but they don't have the most beautiful & largest harbour in the world, instead they have a dirty brown river. I hoped U enjoyed the fireworks & had a great time in our gorgeous city ❤

The firework waterfall is iconic and amazing to see in person at the event. It is the part we all look forward to every year and is not complete without that particular part😊

The first time I remember seeing the waterfall effect from the bridge was for the Bi-centennial in 1988. Dozens of tall ships were in the harbour and I was lucky enough to be on HMAS Hobart, which was also in the harbour as part of the OliviaNewton-John special that was filmed on board. My husband was a Navy cook at the time and we had one of the best seats in the house. Really a once in a lifetime experience. The natural amphitheatre of the harbour makes it the absolute best spot in Australia ( if not the world) for fireworks displays. And I’m from Melbourne, so conceding that is a bit painful, but true.

@@joycie014 I was at Milsons Point & yes, I agree that was the first time it was done & it was BY FAR the best part of the whole display. I think from memory it was the first year that part of the waterfall failed to activate & had a big hole in it (could have been a later year), but it was still incredible. It was a few years after that before it became a regular staple in the NYE display though, but when they brought it back, the response was so strong that it never left again. There was one year when they made a big deal about a $1 million single firework too, but the waterfall was WAY better than that fizzer! Bicentenary celebrations at Botany Bay was the first time they did the fireworks with 2 colour rings, one inside the other, I think those fireworks were a gift from China or something. They were spectacular too, at least for the time, they've become standard now, but the first time people saw them, wow!

@@mehere8038 100%. i read in an article in the guardian yesterday that while the fireworks did cost about $6 million.. that the tourist dollars the event generates is around the $260 million mark. i saw a lot of people complaining about the fact they were spending taxpayer money on this event during tough times - but the reality is, it generates so much more for the state economy (as you've said).

I thought it brought in about 10-20 times it's spend but $6 for $260, wow! & is that including the ease of getting backpacker labour for fruit picking etc & what that does to our finances? How about the soft power it gives us globally? If that's just tourist dollars & nothing more, then it doesn't even start to recognise the huge impact it has on Australia's finances & lifestyle. Even stuff like our wine is going to see an ongoing price increase overseas, due to the feel good & desire factors associated with our country from people loving our fireworks Thanks for those numbers, I hadn't seen them & didn't realise it was anywhere near that high, even though I knew the ratio was high

Sydney is the first major city to see the new year in. The first big city west of the international date line. ( I think Hawaii is the last country to see the new year)

No city does it better than my beloved home town Sydney. So many people from around the world come to see our spectacular fireworks.

As an Aussie abroad (from Sydney), still brings a tear to my eyes when I watch the fireworks.

What made Sydneys new years fireworks show even more amazing is back before Covid there use to be a competition for kids under 16 years old to draw their dream firework Display and the winner would not only get free tickets for them and their family to fly to Sydney to watch the fireworks but your drawing would be apart of the new years fireworks show that year as well🎉🎉

I would doubt Americans are shocked at the size of anything especially anything coming out of lil ol' Australia. It gets views though from insecure Aussies.

I have a relative who lives in an apartment that has an amazing view of the fireworks, so I go there every year. Seeing them in person is absolutely amazing, and they get better every year.

Sydney fireworks are spectacular on a boat on the harbour for sure, I’ve done it a few times, with the reflection on the water the colour is amplified, with a great backdrop! It certainly wows international tourists and local visitors alike, you can hear them saying whoa…you have to be there…..

Yes you should definitely come to Australia to see it irl.

I've seen the Sydney fireworks twice, the experience is so physical. there are barges all over, which they save for particular parts, so suddenly something is going off behind you that you had no idea was there. the music choreography is also brilliant, you cant get a bigger bass kick than a barrage of explosions. but all in time to the music? its mental. the music is played on a radio station, which everyone is tuned to, so the PA system is everything from pocket transistor radios to boomboxes to fully rigged car soundsystems. the sound is coming from EVERYWHERE. Its pretty intense, 10/10, would recommend.

1 million people squeezing in around the harbour and millions more watching on TV. The City of Sydney's annual New Year gift to the world - despite those, who try to block it each year. It is scary for pets and wildlife in the area. The fireworks are beautifully planned each year by the talented and experienced Foti family. There are 2 shows - 1 at 9.00 pm so that the children can see it and then go to bed, followed by the big one at midnight. I think the cost this year was about $A6.2 million (around $US4.2 million).

9pm fireworks also get the babies with prams etc out of the city before the transport system tries to move a million people at once. There's plenty of kids on trains & buses after midnight, but the really little & high needs ones are generally removed from the area after the 9pm fireworks, which makes everything run better for everyone. A bus driver one year was telling me how he had to have adults give up their seats to put little kids into them, cause the kids couldn't reach the grab poles etc & were in danger of being crushed by adults around them, so it was too dangerous to transport them unless they were put into seats. There's a need to remove the majority of those passengers before the mass crush of a million people at once, that's what the 9pm fireworks are really for

Sydney Harbour is big. From the Bridge to the entrance (the head#) is seven miles. There are multiple firework barges, all coordinated, through the Harbour and on the other side of the Bridge.

I was lucky enough to be seeing a lady who's brother lived in one of the tall buildings near the bridge a few years back, like way up near the top, those big fireworks going off were soooo loud and shook the whole building, It was an experience.

I was there and saw the fireworks live. Watching it on TV is one thing but seeing it in person is without a doubt the best experience. I was right next to the harbour bridge and it was one of the greatest firework shows I’ve ever seen up close!

From my unit balcony in Merrylands I counted 20 different fireworks displays across the city. Liverpool, Harbour, Bankstown, etc. Wonderful. They started at 8:45pm and finished at 1:15am

We used to sit on the roof of our house in Guildford and see it all too. That was over 20 years ago.

I havent seen it, most Aussies try to watch the Sydney one.. It goes all the way along BOTH sides of the river from both sides of the Bridge.. Australian wins awards at Firework Competions, Worlds Best etc. Enjoy..

I was there for this on the start of the actual millennium (2000-2001 New Years). The crowd was packed like a mosh pit (I had to help a small asian couple where she was ill and they needed help getting out of the crush), But the fireworks show there is always spectacular. I flew down from Brisbane for it.

The boat is the guys who set the fireworks, they create little floating islands so they can shoot the fireworks up. Also on the bridge, opera house, certain buildings ect. The music is tuned by the radio station so you listen to that station, but they do have big speakers to play it in the popular crowd areas!

I grew up on the Balmain peninsula, so I used to just walk down to the point and watch from the back side of the bridge. It’s always crazy but was easy.

Best fireworks across the world are created and executed by an Australian family fireworks company based in Sydney. They do the most spectacular synchronized fireworks in London, China, USA and anywhere else with lots of cash to send up in smoke.

🇦🇺💙💛✌ 🇺🇦 For the first time, despite living just 70km out from Melbourne I got to see both the 9pm display and the partial midnight fireworks from Raddison hotel room having just flown back from Hobart from an amazing drive through Tasmania, also for the first time. There is no doubt that Melbourne can't compete with the bridge and opera house, but it does have several locations around the city from where different displays are set off. One can see them them all from a distance such as Mt Dandenong.

People start gathering around the harbour during the day to get their ideal spot and spend the day together with family and friends waiting for the fireworks display. If there is one thing that Sydney does well it's NYE, we have our harbour as the perfect backdrop and Howard & Sons always do an amazing job!

Me and my family always watch this on the tv for new yrs eve(Im Australian too) and also, i fell like ur getting more and more australian lol 🇦🇺

Son the music is on fm radio in time with the fire works.

The ending is always a suprise and just insane... being someone who is super grateful to see this every year home town in sydney.. the sound is always like bombs going off at the end!

We do a reasonable fireworks display in Melbourne, but I must admit Sydney is next level… truly amazing. It’s on my bucket list to be there one NYE.

This goes world wide now and it is always the best. Up until a couple of years ago they did the same show at 9.30pm so the children could go to bed. Then they did it again at midnight, not sure if they still do it twice. Anyone with a boat can use it for free, just stay behind the safety line. Before COVID this used to go across 3 Suburbs and you could see for miles. That is one big party from around 7.00pm with bands and music, celebrities and it finishes with this. Every year I wait for the fireworks waterfall from the bridge.

I live in Brisbane Australia , we have great fireworks displays also during the course of a year , but even I’m impressed every year at the New Years fireworks display on Sydney harbour :) love it

The Fortunato Foti Family have been doing the Sydney Fireworks for decades. The company dates back to Italy in 1793, and Fotunato is the 7th generation of the family doing fireworks. They are the best in the world at Fireworks displays. On New Years Eve there are two fireworks displays. A family one at 9pm (so parents can get the children home & to bed) and then the larger one at midnight. There are fireworks on the bridge, Opera House, other buildings and there are barges all along the harbour on both sides of the bridge,

From 1980 to 2010 sydney fireworks was 30 minutes ,the same national radio station was with AC/DC Song Thunderstruck, jimmy barnes ???hoodu gurus,k men atr work,, crowded housecr ,,,

Every year it’s different. So spectacular.

Oh, ok. I thought the newspaper said $8 mil and 14 tonnes. But that still makes the containers very light. Of course there is a limit to the quantity any one vehicle / container can carry, and distance between them on the road. Regardless, the final result is undeniably stunning.

Perth sky show on Australia day is actually the best . Half hour show in time with Aussie music .

A million people, estimated, lined the harbour, and the rest of us watched tv as it was broadcast live. They say it brings in about $250 mil in tourist dollars . It helps that it’s summer down here. Nice balmy evening, party, barbecues, singing and dancing, and then the fireworks to end the night

The lights are on the bridge all year around & are normally used to support different causes i.e. during breast cancer awareness, the bridge will be lit up pink. As for cost, approximately $6.2mil(AUD) for the Sydney fireworks display in 2024.

Ohh me and my little family and I decided to head into the city and watch the show this year, the real challenge getting in early enough and finding parking 😅 and the waterfall looking fireworks happen to be my favourite it looks even better in person

I reckon once we lost Guy Fawkes day, all bets were off for NYE. We love our fireworks here.

As Australia is one of the very first countries to kick off the new year, the celebrations are often seen around the world. The "Sydney Harbor" fireworks display commenced around 1976 and is made up of fireworks on the bridge, several tall buildings and a number of barges. In more recent years lasers & other lights have been added. On average around 1.6 million people attend in person & many millions more watch on TV. The music is synchronized via the TV broadcaster, a local radio station, plus there are live stages at vantage points around the water and their PA systems are hooked in. The budget for the fireworks is around $5.8~6 million & the company (Foti) that coordinates this display also did the fireworks at the 2008 Olympics in China.

Was a great show! I hosted our NYE party this year on my balcony and can confirm you have a great view from anywhere around the harbour! The music doesn't play in real life hahah although different venues / areas will have some playing

They do have speakers set up around the public viewing areas that play the music.

G'day Ryan, I hope I'm right with this theory! I think Sydney and Melbourne are the first large international cities to see the new year after the dateline. Because of the iconic sites in Sydney Harbour, Sydney spends alot if money on new year.

The best seat to watch Sydney fireworks would be at the revolving restaurant atop Sydney centre point tower

They have speakers on the pontoons 1 million people in Sydney to watch this many flew in from around the world to watch , best spot was Mrs Macs Chair opposite Pinchgut which would be the best place actually, People actually watch it from up on the Blue mountains 40 miles to the west

I’m never going to look at the Sydney Opera House and not think of “ oh look it’s coming of the Doritos”

There are often comments on the lead up to the year-end about how sydney feels like it is in the spotlight during new years. As one of the first major cities to celebrate, they always want to put on something memorable for the international channels to cover during their own countdowns.

Ryan, Two great vantage points to watch the fireworks. 1. Mrs Macquarie’s Chair 2. The Sydney Opera House forecourt

Great video. I was there and the fireworks are so awesome. The ending just keeps going off again and again. The boats in the harbour are the best way to see the fireworks with a prime view of the bridge and Opera house, tickers are around $600 or more. The fireworks cost around $6 million aud but the event brings in so many tourists and exposure so it is well worth it..... as well as entertaining 1 million people around the harbour! It is the best place for NYE as it is usually warm and there are so many spots around the harbour to see the fireworks, as well as lighting shows. Each year it changes up a little too. The waterfall is amazing towards the end. It covers such a huge space. You Gotta do it some day.

There are actually 2 sessions on the evening. There is a 9pm fireworks for families, and then the midnight which is the main one, the one you were watching.

Hi Ryan, check out the finale of the Brisbane festival. It closes with Riverfire. Military aircraft fly very low before a vertical climb and set fire to the afterburn. They have to gain a certain altitude to put the fire out. Fireworks are set off up and down the river in time to a music beat.

gotta say this years fireworks were pretty awesome. even though they are pretty much in the same place and the bridge does the same thing every year this one was awesome!

It’s amazing in person, we’ve gone to watch from a hilly street in North Sydney a few times and it echoes off all the buildings totally surrounding you. Nice vibes with everyone standing in the streets watching on and chatting in the lead up to it too.

It's fantastic, it's hard to decided where to watch the NYE in Sydney , I go to North Sydney because you get better view the beaches or Parramatta . We also have a family show at 9pml. We in Sydney some time we take it for granted it's beautiful.

while there is a tonne of people around the harbour there are also a tonne of people in the side streets of the suburbs in the city and the roar across the city and suburbs is amazing to listen to. there is soooo much you cant see.

I did Sydney NYE back in 2017 into 2018. I did go on a boat which was about $1k for two of us, but that also included all you can eat seafood buffet and all you can drink base beer and wines. Definitely worth going on the boat even though you pay to go in a parade pretty much 😂😂

I lived for five years on the harbour opposite the Opera house left this year , it was amazing to be so close to the fireworks. Such an incredible harbour and the bridge when the waterfall of lights comes down takes your breath away . The harbour is the best backdrop for this display
