People are usually in prison because they did something wrong, but most of the time, society failed them first. Even if you don't know how we failed, it's safe to assume that we did. With proper education and care, even a born psychopath can be a productive member of society and never hurt anyone. It's a cliché that all those serial killers were abused as a child, but they also didn't receive proper treatment for it.

The uplifting part about this video is that the American warden who said he visited Halden four years prior was super sceptical, almost in complete disbelief, especially over the "luxury" and access to knives and tools, in the video where we saw him visit the Nordic countries, but it seems he came around and understands.

The problem is that the American system is based on punishment, and only that. That is not only the prison system, but the entire society. "An eye for an eye" will only reduce the value of every human life. Death sentence is a cruel example. How many have been sentenced to death, and were actually innocent? How many lives are acceptable losses in that case? Is it an acceptable risk to kill innocent people so we can give the monsters the ultimate punishment? How should we sentence a person that killed someone for $10? More important, how did we fail to provide for that individual? How was that person pushed to a point where another life was not worth more than $10? When you are pushed to the limit of existence, you will loose faith in the system, in society and don't trust anyone. If you are treated like trash, you will end up looking at the world that way. Then others life is valued by the content in their pockets, life itself has no value. By sentencing those to death is just proving to the world how society values life. Same with regular sentence in jail, treat them like animals, and they are animals when they get out. Every beating and humiliation is an important lesson in how to treat others. They will eventually loose respect for others value, and are willing to kill for whatever is in the victims pockets. In Norway we have systems to support those living on the outside of society. The system is not perfect, but the goal is to treat everyone with respect and dignity. The goal is to learn everyone that we have value, we matter, we are all part of the society.

Not to mention the amount of prisoners who should be in a mental hospital instead. So many people are considered "monsters" or "emotionless" or whatever, and instead they are mentally ill and need to be treated or locked away in a VERY different environment than a criminal prison.

Norwegian prisons aren't all as sweet and dandy as in the "postcards". Even after the prison reform internal justice still very much exists, as I suspect it does in all European prisons. It's just that guards here work very, very actively to stop it from happening, and try to always keep a watchful eye, whereas in the US they often at best seem to keep a blind eye towards it or at worst encourage it, it seems.

Of course, it's prison. The difference is that European prisons are generally focused on rehabilitative justice while US prisons are focused solely on punitive justice on all levels due to the nature of Capitalism and Conservatice ideology.

I find it to be something psychotic - almost psychopathic when a manager feels the need to have a greater insight into what an inmate is doing. Even if the motive is to unveil if the inmate is making a stabbing device suitable to kill an employee. There is absolutely impossible to have full control over what an inmate is doing, thus the motive for a line of sight into the cell is not sound. It's a completely misunderstood sense of security. I can only explain it by the assumption the leadership has an extremely low IQ. The human being is a fragile organism that is easy to kill. Therefore, it is not appropriate to have a security system where one has a hostile attitude toward the inmates. The Norwegian model of 'dynamic security' is so obviously the right way to go that it is difficult to understand how anyone can come to any other conclusion. Of course, there are wrong, incurable people without any moral barriers, and it may be necessary to protect oneself against them with a static security model, where the inmate is chained in arms and legs and thus unable to harm others. Security can only be built on trust or distrust. The main point to draw from this is: there can be no middle ground.

I could not agree more. In Norway, the whole society is built on trust. If you give people trust, something magical happens - most people will return their trust to society, and with that you have a positive spiral that will eventually create a better society. It is worth trying in all types of communities. Someone has to start for something to happen.

I miss the wider cultural environment where these prison systems are embedded in. In the USA, you are on your own. The state is only for facilitating your own freedom. In Europe we have interventionist states. They will act upon your freedom if it benefits the whole society. That goes for all aspects of life, almost, and certainly also for the prison systems. Other examples are: private car use, infrastructure versus public transport infrastructure, allowed to carry a weapon (or not), mixed zoning in physical planning (or not), protection of worker's rights versus complete freedom to hire and fire, duties on fuels, tobacco and liquor, drug policies, you name it. The US culture is massively different (freedom necessitates individualism) versus the European culture (freedom of the individual is curtailed by the common good). So, to come back at prisons. In the US YOU screwed up, it is NOT the task of the government to correct your behavior, only to PUNISH for what you did and keep you off the street. In Europe, we say YOU did something wrong, WE are going to find out what went wrong and we will HELP YOU to correct what went wrong in the first place and hope it helps you and us all.

This is such an important video, I really hope this type of thing makes a difference in the long run. Numbers don't lie, criminals who are treated like shit in prison and have no more hope for a future when they come out than they did before, are far more likely to continue committing crimes. Very few people commit crimes as a choice, the absolute vast majority do it out of desperation or because they ended up in a shit situation. Poverty, social isolation, bullying, discrimination, all of these things lead to crime. By taking people out of those situations, and making sure they have a future to work at when they get out of prison, we ensure that people don't continue committing crimes. But, this is all assuming that one actually wants to stop crime. With the US prison system being a slave factory rather than a correction facility, I suppose it works exactly as intended.

About revenge, as you said - that doesn't lead anywhere....or, well it does - but exclusively in a bad way! It's like the U.S is still politically 'stuck' in the Old Testament: "An eye for an eye". The only thing I can say about that sentiment is to reiterate what the Indian sage and freedom-fighter said: "An eye for an eye will merely make the whole world blind".....not a good place to be in, is it?

The mindset of the society is important - eye by eye or rehabilitation - that’s the question. The mindset of very ancient time or that of an humanity world. The second - the officers have to go for a lot lot more education to do it well - otherwise it’s not be able. The third it’s danger to take the power from gangs and bosses in the jail etc away so you have to mix them in every ways - race, religions, believes. The forth you have to give them all hopes and future with skills and education. The fifths how do you take away the system of businesses - to make money by a few members of the society - I believe in the hardcore capitalism of USA - not caring about anyone - it’s the hardest or much impossible thing to do. A mountain of very hard work Love from Austria/Europe 🇦🇹

Mostly in US prison system is business. Just like everything else there is business too. Becouse everything is created to make money for the owner nothing works in humane way. People are just tools and parts to manufakture more money and that`s it. That is the reson everything is so f*cked up in US, but works fine in Europe and other western countries. Social secure, healthcare, schools, prisons and many other things is paid by government that collects taxes and provides these services to all the people in the country. All those things are problem in US. Most common answer from people is that there isn´t money or where to get the money becouse we don´t want to pay more taxes. Well it ain´t easy, but everything of those should improve to humane stantards one at the time and as long the working system is developed and starts to work it will make peoples life better and for doing that those improvements are going to pay everything back into the government and afterward it is rewarding all the nation. Other option would stop the wars where US is involved and use the war money to make things better much quicker. That would be win win scenario.

it would if US would give change a try. USA are so set in their way its in many ways like 3th world country, and they should be ashamed of it. kinda weird how ignorant the majority of the people in US are in thinking their country are so great, free and so on and so on when the matter of fact its really bad in most aspect. highest amount of prisoners per capita, and that get treated like dirt. basicly only somewhat civilized country that still have death sentence. peoples health are treated as a business to make money, and people actually have to think about their wallet before deciding if they can afford to go to the doctor or not, and it is so disgusting i don't really have words for it. getting healthcare in entire europe are looked at as a basic human right, and noone are allowed to make money of others people health when they are most vulnerable(higest amount i would ever pay in doctor/hospital bills for a year in total would be around 200-250 USD). and wtf are up with how the average worker getting treated over there? who tf came up with the idea you only allowed to have only so many sickdays during a year, like someone can choose how often they getting sick? why would they rather have sick people comming to work getting everyone else around them sick, instead of having them staying home and get the care they need? the vacation system are also totaly shookingly bad. people that only work, work, work, work, and dont have proper wacations are never gonna be as productive as they can, because a good balance is really important. people in US live to work, wile we in Europe work so we can live. witch get me to next point. why tf dont US just make sure everyone are paid fairly for the jobb their doing instead of realying on the seriously messed up out of controll tipping system? legit, if a waitress in my country was treated same way as an average waitress in US, her boss would risk up to 6 years in jail. USA, the land of the free? more like USA; the land of we treat our people like dirt, and dont care about them at all...

Hi! I was shocked when my black roommate from texas, who i lived together with in the same apartment for years, told me that he didnt vote...nor did his friends register to vote...well since i am german and it happened here, i believe the registry thing is kind of a hurdle for a lot of people- perhaps this needs to be changed first to bring the democracy to everybody. But in order to change anything for the better -it needs effort to be put in and raise ur voice. Everybody must understand that the politics exist for themselves and its a must to engage in this for everybodys benefit... call it communism- then u didnt understand anything...a blooming society; everybody benefits from it. But it needs everybody to participate.
