The ability to just walk through the midfield and the defense is incredible and is like a superpower for the team he plays for. That alone is often just not defendable and all you can do is hope for the best. But he also has a great vision, world class passes and world class precision finishes (including freekicks). It's really incredible. When my German team played Argentina in the 2014 WC final everybody watching with me would look physically stressed every time Messi had the ball. And mind you they had other world class players on that team as well. But Messi in the opponent team is pure terror as a fan. for me the biggests arguments for Messi GOAT are: that he's the best team player ever as well as the best "joker" / "one man army" player at the same time ; his phisicality is underrated, one of the most agile player ever and his balance is almost unmatched, he's not tall or super strong because of his growth hormone deficiency (GHD) but he even took advantage of that ; in terms of titles/awards/records/... he got the most ballon d'or ever (kinda like the mvp award from what i've heard), he have scored the most goals in a calendar year ever, he's the top assister ever and he's the only player to have scored 5 goals in a champion's league game (just to mention the most important) (also at 6:20 he reenacted exactly the Maradona's "goal of the century" )

Haaland is a great goal scorer, very strong with amazing shooting and heading, while Messi is the full package, agility, strength, speed, vision and passing, dribbling, freekicks, long shoots, finishing moves, insane ball control, it's like having the best skills of every other player into one player. His only weakness is heading, because of his size (and even if it's a weakness he scored a few goals with his head), but he excels in everything else. And the weird thing... it's not a product of training, hard work and learning... it's a natural skill, he got it since he was born, if you watch videos of him when he was a child he has exactly the same play-style, and his unique ability to make all the other players look like fools. I don't think this video does any justice to his true skills, but I hope you watch more of him as he's the embodiment of football. It's true that I am argentine, so I may be speaking with my heart a little bit, but when I first saw Messi I rejected him, because everybody were comparing him to Maradona at that time... after just a few matches I realized he was even better. I started following his career in Barcelona, and it was pure joy to my eyes. Between him, Xavi and Iniesta, they transformed football into art and I will never forget that.

The man is everything into one, best scorer/assister/passer/dribbler/creator and wayyyyy more. Consistent throughout his whole career. Won everything there is to win, the most decorated footballer ever. And he just won the world cup, being the best player at the tournament, and then decided to end it while on top. The thing to realise here is just how big a football field is. How small Messi is and relate that to speed and distances covered in a game. The next thing is that you are looking from a distance and therefore can see all the available players to pass to. Messi cant. BUT has a amazing ability to 'read' the game and gives as many brilliant assists as he scores goals. Then you have to factor in, that when he was a child, he had multiple operations on his legs to lengthen them! Messi is a born football player with amazing all round skills. Started with Barcelona with the introduction from Ronaldinho at 17 and scored a hat-trick for the 1st team on his debut. Has won every medal and cup, including the World Cup and 8 Ballon d'Or's awards, scored the most goals, so how you ever doubted his ability is beyond me. Something for you to watch, when Barcelona were the best team around and played the Tiki Taka system- there was no team to beat them. I've seen the Trophy Room at Camp Nou - Barcelona's Stadium- its very very impressive. When there's a Match at home in Barcelona, the whole town goes football mad, every bar, restaurant and shop stops to watch the game on tv. something to behold, amazing. Messi is the KING! or should I say GOAT!

In all his career, he always was compared with Diego Maradona, and there is a a similar play like in the World Cup Mexico 86 against England, where Maradona did the 2nd goal (the first one was known like the "hand of God), but in that 2nd goal, he runs with the ball against 7 players of England, and Messi did almost the same play on a game with Barcelona. I'm glad that you're knowin this beautifull game. I'm a fan of River Plate from Argentina (and i hope you like it too).. take care!

I have Messi in my top 3 all time (interchangeably) with Michael Jordan and Tom Brady. They all share the same things: incredible, unmatchable talent while at their peak, broke all the goddamn records they could break, and then had insanely long careers mostly devoid of injury. There's an argument for Messi as #1 as not only did he match the other two for individual achievements and records, but he's about to win his 8th Ballon d'Or, which is the World Football MVP. That's 8 fucking MVPs... just ridiculous.

    1) Messi scored a very similar goal as Diego Maradona scored during a World Cup against England. Maradona was considered by many as the GOAT for a long time, is also Argentinian, is built like Messi, was considered a God in Napoli, Italy just as Messi is considered in Barcelona, and for a brief time coached Messi as part of the Argentine National Team. 2) Statistically Messi is the GOAT of football/soccer. Qualitatively he is the best dribbler of all time (as you witnessed), the best scorer of all time, possibly the best assist maker of all time (not sure where he ranks in assists, but definitely tops in assists for players who are tops in scoring), one of the best at free kicks. Quantitatively nobody has even close to the number of goals and assists as he has. He is the most decorated footballer of all time based on trophies won. Some players won more World Cups only because they were part of powerhouse national teams. In terms of football, the only question arises by the unfairness of comparing players in different era, such as Jordan and LeBron. LeBron never had to contend with the type of defenses that Jordan had to because of new rules. Messi had to deal with triple, quadruple teams, but during Maradona's era, defenses were literally trying to break his legs, and you had to almost kill a man to get a yellow card! 3) You have to define "athlete". Are you talking about football player, or athlete in any sport? And are you talking about effectiveness in a particular sport or athleticism of the human body? If the latter, Will Chamberlain had to be one of the top athletes of all time, and every winner of the Olympic decathlon has to be in the mix! Obviously Messi was not blessed with the most athletic body, and he might not even rank in the top million athletes in the world ever. This makes his achievements even more impressive. For a man who had a disease that stunted his growth and for the longest time prevented him from having good endurance, never has a man achieved such athletic achievements with so little athleticism, in a sport where athleticism is as much a requirement as any!

The thing to remember with football, is that the talent pool is astronomical. Hundreds of millions of kids play every single day. At beaches, in the street, the park, on the field across the street. Each team consists of a squad of 20+ people. In England alone, we have the Premier league. 20 teams. Each team has a squad of 25 players. In addition, they have a youth team for every single age group. We have the Championship consisting of 24 professional teams below. Each with similar youth setups. There are an additional 2 leagues of 20+ teams below that too. Make no mistake, these are all still good players. All have youth teams. There are dozens more leagues too. 7 a side teams and 5 a side teams. That's an incredible number of people honing a single craft. Now add similar numbers for all of Europe, South America and Africa. Why is this important? Despite the talent pool being in the billions of people, Messi is the best dribbler, best passer/playmaker and goalscorer over the past 30 years. That's scarcely believable! Whilst other sports stars are great too, they aren't competing against that many others. Messi isn't necessarily considered the goat of football. Maradona and Pele are also in that conversation. Aside from them you also have Cristiano Ronaldo, Zidane, Di Stefano, Puskas, Ronaldo (brazil) and dozens more that are absolutely brilliant and considered by some to be the greatest ever. Since 1990, I'd say Messi is the greatest sportsmen across all sports simply because of the added competition. Obviously, there are arguments to be made for others; Tiger Woods, LeBron, Michael Jordan, Brady, Djokovic and Federer etc but Messi tops them for me. He's made me laugh out loud in amazement countless times. There's barely a match that he plays where he doesn't do something most players would not be able to do. Made the extraordinary seem completely ordinary... P.s. Haaland is nowhere near that level. He's very good but he's an out and out goalscorer. Very important player to have and will score truck loads of goals but he doesn't bring a magical joy that those named above do.

A good argument for why you could or should consider him one of, if not the best athlete of all time, is because he's competing in the most competitive sport in the world, and he's the best there is and possibly ever will be. Considering other sports such as basket ball, handball, american football and so on would have their top athletes be 1 in a million, or perhaps one in 10 or maybe even a 100 million, whereas Messi has to be considered 1 in a billion+, it's hard to argue that he shouldn't be the best. Unless your definition of the best athlete is whoever is most efficient across all sports on average, I find it hard to dispute Messi being number 1.

Messi's greatest feat is being such an absolute monster on the pitch that he can NEVER humiliate someone. No matter how ridiculous what he does to you is, it will never be something you should be mocked for, because it doesn't matter who it is, Messi could do it to anyone. Prime Messi made even other GOAT candidates look bad by comparison, and even in the twilight of his career as he starts the slow descent towards retirement, he's still an absolute monster that's terrifying to go up against for anyone, just from sheer awareness, knowledge and skill, even if he no longer has the speed he once had. Also the reason why he's arguably the greatest athlete is the sheer insane amount of competition there is in football soccer. Billions of people have tried their foot at the game, and not one of them has been better than Messi at it.

You have to know a little of his story. Most of those footwork skills, dribbles, and whatnot, he already did at age 5. He's a natural. Obviously, he's honed them since then. But these highlights don't even focus on the thing that really makes him the greatest--football IQ. Messi has peripheral vision. When he's walking around, apparently disengaged from the game, he's actually x-raying the entire pitch, identifying positions and cracks in the rival's defenses. When he gets a pass, he already knows what he's going to do with the ball because he's figured out beforehand what's the best course of play, who is in the best position to receive it, or whether he should just play it himself. Obviously, he can no longer make those electrifying runs he used to 10 years ago, but he makes up for it more than adequately with his exquisite playmaking. There will never be another Lionel Messi.

The reason why Messi doesn't look that "athletic" is because when he was a child he had a deseased related to the growth hormone. He had to get treatments done for years, His family had to fly out from Argentina to Spain several times to do the treatment which was super pexpensive. He was able to get better but because it was a growth hormone his overall body looks slightly odd. The part of the body most affected? And that’s exactly the point that makes him the greatest to ever play the game. He’s been able to humiliate the best defenders in the world, and run through entire teams, while usually being the smallest player on the pitch. He can’t rely on outmuscling people, outjumping them, outsprinting them. A genius, a magician, an alien.

Lionel Messi: I've Achieved Everything "I've achieved the most important goal that I wanted, which is to win the World Cup with my team. It's amazing how everything can happen," Messi said in Sport. "I've never prioritized individual titles, and achieving goals with Argentina and with the club I've strengthened has led to an extraordinary career," he added. which means he has no ambitions to win any awards anymore after winning the world cup he just wants to enjoy football at the end of his career. that's why maybe he chose inter miami. He still has a big chance to win his 8th Ballon d'Or award but even he says it doesn't matter anymore. if messi still has the ambition to win a few more awards maybe he will still choose to play in clubs & european leagues. during an interview with md & sport. messi said "I received bids from other European clubs… but I didn't even considered those proposals because my only idea was to join Barcelona in Europe" sumber: fabrizio romano, mundo deportivo, sport The offers Messi had from Europe other than Barcelona was from Newcastle United and Inter Milan. Source: La Porteria Messi also chose inter miami not because of money problems. And one more thing, messi also doesn't give false hope to barcelona, but on the contrary. . “I really wanted to return to Barça, I had that dream. But after what happened two years ago, I did not want to be in the same situation again, leaving my future in the hands of someone else... I wanted to take my own decision, thinking of me and my family". . “I heard reports of La Liga giving the green light but the truth is that many, many things were still missing in order to make my return to Barça happen. I didn't want to be responsible for them to sell players or reduce salaries. I was tired". . “Money, never been an issue with me. We didn't even discuss the contract with Barcelona! They sent me a proposal but was never an official, written and signed proposal. We never negotiated my salary. It wasn't about money or I was going to join Saudi". . “I'm sure that there's people into the club that does NOT want me to return to Barça - considering that as negative impact for the club". . . “I received bids from other European clubs… but I didn't even considered those proposals because my only idea was to join Barcelona in Europe”. . “I'd love to be close to Barcelona in the future, for sure. I will live in Barcelona again with my family, it's already decided - I hope to help the club one day, because it's the club I love”. . Source: fabrizio romano, mundo deportivo, sport yes indeed the offer from miami is not cheap. they offered a salary of around €50m and percentage of money from apple tv's mls season pass subscription, percentage of money from inter miami shirt sales and the possibility of acquiring an mls franchise at the end of his career but i believe it was not as big as the offer made by al hilal. As far as i know the last offer made by al hilal to messi before he decided to go to inter miami was €1.5b per two seasons. If messi accepts the offer. After 2 seasons, Messi will become the richest athlete in the world. But he prefers inter miani. He said because he was thinking about his family. Maybe his wife would prefer to move to inter miami.

A big reason why futbol is a global sport is because all body types can do well. Whether it's a 5'6" dribbler with low center of gravity or a 6'4" defender with a big frame. There's many ways to play the game tactically and strategically. A lot of Americans make the mistake thinking that the bigger/taller player is a better athlete but when the sport is played with the ball at your feet none of that matters if you can't touch the ball. As the biggest sport on the planet, there's a larger pool of players and every pro at the top level is a freak. Then you have players like Messi that were made for this.
