    For your knowledge, Solar Panels DONT need direct sunlight anymore, the newer models can store energy simply by beeing slightly in the bright.

  • @dirkvornholt2507

    @dirkvornholt2507

    Although that's technically correct, the yield in direct sunlight is orders of magnitude higher than in indirect light or shade. This might lead to the cost of the panels never paying back in the lifetime of the panels (return of invest). So, the choice of locating the panels is not arbitrary. Still vertical south facing panels might be a good choice.

    It’s not culture, look at pictures of US cities in the early 1900s, you will see that walkable and accessible cities with public transportation was longer part of US culture than cars are. It’s politics and economics.

  • @klarasee806
    @klarasee8064 ай бұрын

    I don‘t think Germany is "small enough" to have a great public transport system, or the USA is "too large". It doesn’ have to do much with space but with politics, car lobby and city planning / infrastructure. Your cities and towns were built with cars in mind, ours with pedestrians. Those that were formerly built with cars in mind, are often constantly adjusted or even "built back" for pedestrians, bicycles and public transport. We do not have these huge residents only suburbs, but much smaller residents only areas with grocery stores, bakeries, little shops, schools, etc. inbetween them, so they can be reached by pedestrians and cyclists - instead of having these huuuge schools, malls, grocery stores, etc., etc. many miles away from people‘s homes. If we can have great public transport in all of Europe, space wise you can have it in the USA, too. But it would need a different kind of city planning.

    Regarding the "bike pollution", the city of Freiburg employs staff to check bicycle parking spaces regularly. If they notice that a bike takes the space for too long (don´t know how though) your bike gets a certain sticker, which contains a timeline and a deadline for you to move the bike. If you don´t move it, the city will take it and auction it at some point with others (if the bike is still in good condition)

    The orientation of the solar modules depends on the latitude of their location. Since Germany is much further north than most parts of the USA, the southern parts of Germany are at the same latitude as Canada. Munich, for example, is further north than Quebec. Therefore, the vertical angle to the sun is shallower than in places closer to the equator, like most parts of the US. The other reason for installing them on the balcony is that they are home power stations. The system is only for the apartment and can be installed by the residents without permission up to a power of 600W and without structural changes. After installation, you must register with your energy supplier.

    Some added info about Freiburg. There's a lot of commuting from the outskirts (other towns) into Freiburg. People who live outside but work in Freiburg. They arrive by regional train (Regiobahn) and a lot of them store a bike at the train station which they then pick up to go to their job. If they don't take the tram or bus. Plus, large parts of Freiburg's university and some other colleges are located in the inner city and a lot of students arrive by train then take their bike to wherever they have classes. That's why there's so many bikes at the train station. I would question the accessability because of the cobblestone that's everywhere. If you're not that mobile or need a cane for walking then the inner city of Freiburg is hell. Especially the area around the Münster (cathedral) which uses really rough big cobblestone. When they first put that in the handicapped entrace of the public library was no longer accessible for people in wheelchairs because of the cobblestone.

    The sun goes from east to west and these balcony-power-stations (of course we made a word for it: "Balkonkraftwerk") are developed and designed to work very well.

    Yes there are solutions for parking bikes and they are necessary. The place you saw, is one of them: it’s a parking lot for bikes (it’s located at the University). Near the train station there is even a parking garage for bikes. A friend of mine uses it to go to work in Basel. He drives by bike to the train and parks there. And if something is broken - there is a bikerepair workshop.

    And if you loose your bike somewhere there, you can just wait till that very shop does it bi-annual bike sale. You can either find your own bike there or buy another one dirt cheap.

    I was born in Freiburg and it's really beautiful .... it's one of Germanys most beautiful cities. like my Hometown Würzburg (north of Bavaria) it's governed by the green party. Since the green party has taken control in Würzburg, the number of trees downtown are deceasing dratically and so has security.

    To inform you on your solar panel theories there´re two big parts you´re missing. First of all, you´re talking about Germany so don´t think you´re really gonna find a balcony which isn´t facing south; second we have a new solar panel technology which is most efficient in indirect sunlight like during winter time. They don´t produce as much power as the old ones in summer but while those barly doing anything in winter the new ones still are bringing in about 20-25% depending.

    Hi from Germany 😊 Culture...? This is not a question of culture. Seriously, Germany is the cradle of car manufacturing and the home of car addicts. It is a question of the will to make a better life possible for us, our children and the environment. Culture is not the obstacle but the lack of will, politically and socially.

    i don't know, as long as there is no driver's license for cyclists i am anti-biker. There are so many people who disregard or don't know the rules of the road, which makes them a risk. Plus I don't like the moral "I'm better than you because I ride a bike" attitude of many cyclists

    The town was NOT founded in 1120! The town got its "right" to be a town.....so they got own market, tax etc. rights. People live in that area since more than 40.000 years. The oldest cultural items of mankind, are found just a few miles away! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion-man
