Borussia is simply the latin name for "Prussia". Borussia Dortmunds for example was founded in 1909, Borussia Mönchengladbach in 1900 and at that time it was not uncommon for football teams to adapt names such as "Borussia", "Germania" and the likes in addition to the name of the city.

Dortmund doesn't have the name Borussia because of Prussia, but because there was a brewery in the city called Borussia and the father of the founder, Franz Jacobi, worked there before he died

​@@dubtechno22ja korrekt......aber in der kneipe "wildschütz" (und nicht "borussia") hing ein werbeschild der Borussia-Brauerei am Borsigplatz (die hat aber ihren namen von Preußen). Da jacobis vater früh verstorben war hatten sie sich dann auf Borussia geeinigt.

this walking together is meant to be taking over the foreign city. this is mostly done at away games. the fans conquer other fans' ground one might say

Hi... I would like to put some things into some context. German fans are a bit different because "Germany" was historically different. Just under 200 years ago, Germany was a patchwork of smaller and larger independent kingdoms, duchies, counties, etc. Cities within sight of each other were part of sometimes hostile countries that also occasionally fought wars with each other. The small states no longer exist, but the mentality of the people, who have a strong local patriotism, does. e.g. quite a few see themselves first as Franconians, then as Bavarians and only at the end as Germans... and this localism goes down to city level (and city districts, for example, when several small towns have been merged into one larger one). Of course, wars are no longer fought... but we have a substitute: football. People are usually fans of the football club in whose regional vicinity they were born. Football is then a cultural and defining matter for whole generations of families. Of course, there are also fans for whom this is not the case, but they are usually not Ultras or travel behind their teams week after week. It is no coincidence that many fan groups look like medieval armies when they march. Flags, cheerleaders, chants. In German, they are also called "Schlachtenbummler"... people who wander from one battlefield to the next like an army. So what you see there are modern variants of the Landsknechte on their way to the battlefield, vicariously carried out by the one football team ;)

I'm a fan of 1.FC Nuremberg, it's an frankonian (part of bavaria) football club, we have a few ultra groups but the biggest is UN94, I'd appreciate it if you'd look into some videos of 1.FC Nuremberg, the club was founded on may 4th 1900, the club won the league title 9 times and 4 times the german pokal, was for about 70 years considered the best football club in germany, after the money became more and more influencing for football, Nuremberg became more struggle to keep up with the other clubs and is going up and down between league 1 and 2, the biggest rivalrie is with the neighbors from Fürth, it is the oldest rivalrie in German football (about 120 years).

I'm a fan of 1. FSV Mainz 05 since 2000. I'm originally from the area around Mainz and became a fan when I was seven years old. In 2002 we missed out of promotion to the Bundesliga in the last matchday when we lost 3-1 at Union Berlin and dropped from the 2nd place to the 4rth. On that day a draw would have been enough to make it. In 2003 it depended on goal difference for promotion because we and Frankfurt had the the same amount of points. We won 4-1 in Braunschweig and Frankfurt had to beat Reutlingen by three goals. Five minutes before the end the score between Frankfurt and Reutlingen was 3-3 but Frankfurt managed to win the game 6-3 and got promoted. That really hurt but in 2004 when we were so much behind the top three teams and nobody believed in us we had an epic comeback and got promoted on the last matchday because we beat Trier 3-0 and Aachen lost 1-0 in Karlsruhe so we got promoted to the Bundesliga for the first ever time in our club history. We have never won the German Championship or the German Cup (DFB-Pokal) and we never were near to it but for us Mainz fans in our area our club is something really special. I'll be a lifelong Mainz fan even I moved to Bielefeld two years ago (340 kms to the north). I still have my season ticket which I own since 13 years.

The reason that several teams are called "Borussia" is that it means "Prussia"in Latin language. Most of the teams called Borussia are in regions which formerly belonged to the Kindom of Prussia. Only exception,which I know is actually my team I support Borussia Dortmund. The story why they are called Borussia is that during the meeting of the founders they were thinking of a name for their team. The meeting was held in a bar, so after a long discussion one of them looked around and found the insignia of the "Borussia beer" and they decided to call their team Borussia Dortmund. Fun fact: Back in the time Dortmund was known as the capital of beer due to its large amounts of breweries, so it is a nice homage to the city :)
