Between 1990 and the release of this song in 1993 about 35 people in Germany were killed by right wing extremists, events like the riot in Rostock-Lichtenhagen and the murderous arson attacks in Mölln and Solingen terrified many people. This song is a reaction to that.

in addition the video is full of symbolics like in the most of their videos. Farin and Bela standing up from the dead is clearly their comeback to music. And Rod sits between them and singing with them as the new member of the band. And soooo much more. It is to say, that the Band never made a political song for an official album before. That shows how big the impact of the events of the extremists was.

Fun fact: When this song is played at German parties, absolutely everyone will join in on the "Oh-oh-oh, ARSCHLOCH!" and start jumping and head banging immediately after. In fact, I was even doing it while watching this.

I remember lisstening to this song in elementary school. One girl had this song in her "favorite songs" playlist, and we listend to it often. One day, the teachers forbid us to listen to the playlist because we were yelling "Arschloch" to loud and everybody could hear us.

While their musical abilities are solid, the real feeling unly unfolds when the subtle clues in wording are understood. @@cerotidinon Ja gut, in dem Punkt muss ich dir widersprechen, und auch zustimmen. Die Lieder sind, was das Gitarrenspiel und das Schlagzeug im Stehen spielen angeht schon nicht ohne. Und zu gleicher Zeit sind die Zeilen auch sehr durchdacht und haben meistens mehr, als eine Bedeutung. Nicht so krass, wie bei Rammstein, aber dennoch. Und ja, in diesen Punkten sind sie definitiv underated, aber ich glaub noch, das das ein unterstatement ist und deshalb hab ich geschmunzelt.

so i used to be a big fan of this band in my early youth and i still adore rio reiser. though i cant really connect with die ärzte anymore, i have no intention of deminishing them. BUT. compared rios lyrical genius, they hold no ground.

Die englische Übersetzung ist schon recht nah am Orginal, allerdings kann auch ich es als 'nicht-native-speaker' schlecht beurteilen, ob es in der englischen Sprache genauso 'bewegend' rüberkommt! Anyway, a freakin' Classic!

Yes, exactly! This song (and its huge popularity) was a strong rejection of the usual apologists that made the rounds of newspaper think-pieces and TV talk shows at the time, always telling us how all those skinheads and neo-nazis were just poor, misunderstood youths, who felt un-heard and left out of modern society, and if we just showed them compassion and made concessions to their world-view, then they would _definitely_ become peaceful model citizens again. This song said to them, "No! Fuck you! If your reaction to feeling sad is hatred and murderous violence, then you are an _asshole!"_

@Galador Ich finde den Song sehr selbsterklärend: Der Typ der den Gedanken einbringt ist als so ungefähr die ekligste Person beschrieben, die man sich so vorstellen kann. Der Erzähler will ihm erst nicht zuhören. Aber nachdem der andere ihm eine verpasst und sich generell als Alpha aufspielt, kann unser Sänger nur mit eingezogenem Schwanz nach Hause rennen. Als er es dann seiner Freundin davon erzählt, bemerkt sie den Zweifel in seiner Stimme und kontert, dass Typen wie er es verdienen zusammengschlagen zu werden. Sie sagen: Egal wie gering die Gedanken sind, wenn jemand auch nur ansatzweise in diese chauvinistische Richtung denkt, hat er nichts gutes verdient.

@@bildfluss I get that question a lot. I started learning German a year or two ago, and I was looking for music to help me learn. Die Ärzte came up a lot in German music recommendations, so I gave them a try. I really liked their sound and lyrics, so they very quickly became my #1 favorite. My skills have improved much faster after I started listening to them, because learning German doesn't feel like a chore when they're involved.

I know this song my whole life, I actually grew up with it, listening to it maybe 10000 times and I bet almost every german know its lyrics. I cant really say why but having such a strong connection to a song thats so powerful and timeless in every possible way makes me cry a little right now 😭

It was their first single after the band split up in 1988. Just to shed some light on the coffins and resurrection in the Video.

Aerzte are one of those bands I really only got to know after I moved to Germany and they're fabulous, socially active and with an uncanny ability to write lyrics that hit both the nail on the head as a nerve. And a lot of the time with a big wink (not in this case though). Honestly though, I prefer the video Callejon made when they covered this song

They say about themself, they are "Die beste Band der Welt!"... And thats correct!

In my hometown, my fav pub is a cute little "Kneipe" beneath a bridge.. Rock, Metal and Punk are styles of music you can hear there. When this song comes up, everyone in the Pub is singing it, from the top of their lungs ^^

The Band was formed in the early 80s, and broke apart a few years after. "Schrei nach Liebe" was their first re-union release in 1993.

Greetings from Germany. I'm a big fan of die Ärzte and the song is one of the best of them.

I think the song works on a number of levels. First, the analysis, that rightwing violence is a show to hide feelings, which isn't too original by the Ärzte, as this has been done before by countless psychologists and politologists. Second, the pity, that those offenders get by those who seek to "understand them", is used by the Ärzte to humiliate the Nazis, by pointing out the constant victimhood mentality and whining about an unjust world amongst the right wing guys, which doesn't square well with their pretend self-image as "strong men" And third, it tells off the "Faschistenversteher" gang of psychologists. Yeah, there might be reasons, why these people turned to be Nazis, but showing them empathy is not the way to treat them. Don't dig after the "true core" of their problems, you are just giving them attention they don't deserve. Just tell them right to their face, that they are crap, and better should shut up.

This is a very good analysis.

I always loved the end of the video where the two little girls who represent two groups of people who are the victims of fascists are just friendly to that one guy and wash his make up of. This reminds me of a story my best friend told me. She knew a former fascist who broke up with his violent past and greets every poc with a friendly smile. Another anecdote would be a letter the band got from a former fascist who literally changed his point of view by listening thier song and said: "Wait, they are singing literally about me and they are right."

UIII! : an authentic american recognizing the fashist lies in his modern culture. praise him.

Great reaction! I love this song, and it's kinda sad that the lyrics are still relevant today. Adding to the anti-Nazi-theme this song has, I always saw it as written against this toxic masculinity mindset that most of the right-wing, patriarchal people are living and thinking of as the one and only way to live, because of this "afraid to cuddle" and "afraid to admit you like soft music" lines in the song. If I am not too late to recommend a song: "Keine Hymnen Heute" by the Broilers, who are another german punk band from Düsseldorf. It's such a great song and I love the video.

fits exactly to me. the more older I get, the more I understand, how important this was. My first album, which I had listen "vorwärts und rückwärts" was Geräusch, but this song still has the special electrical push every time. It don't listen to it anymore for myself that much, but on eery concert it is still the burner and luckly and sadly at the sametime a lot of people are playing it or make a reference to it this days.

One of the hymns of my early youth. Still have the full album on MC from back in the day. Die Ärzte is one of those bands almost every german from the 70s onwards knows and probably can quote multiple lyrics of. Probably only eclipsed by the cult of the band Böhse Onkelz.

I would suggest to react to Rio Reiser "König von Deutschland" but it is packed with so many cultural references and also from the 80s that it will be hard to understand probably.

DÄ are my favourite band so I had to click... but I didn't expected much from a reaction video. but surprisingly it was interesting to hear for me. you reflect the song different because of your time, your culture etc. ... and yeah, what you say about the song fits.

My favorite song of my favorite German band. I remember the first time when I saw this video on the German Viva when I was 4 years old and I liked it already then and the drummer Bela B., this guy in darker hair was my teenage "German crush" and still is. Greetings from Poland 🇵🇱.

Gosh I grew up with them. Great band and I just realized I still know the text and can sing along.

I was in 3rd grade when the song was published. I was just 8 years old, but I understood the message and from then on "Schrei nach Liebe" was my all time favourite song. Die Ärzte have also ever been my favourite band. I mean, nazis suck anyway, but there are quite many of them nowadays and we all have to stand together more than ever to show them: We are more.

As long there are People with hate , As long this song is just the right way to answer

Thanks for the video! "Die Ärzte" had just reunited in 1993 (Farin and Bela greet each other from the coffin). The time around the reunification of Germany 1989/1990 is shown until today as a big party, but there were also dark sides. The time is also described as "Baseballschlägerjahre" (baseball bat years). Neo-Nazis from West Germany allied themselves with neo-Nazis from East Germany.There were many attacks, deaths and a racist climate towards asylum seekers, migrants, punks, homeless people and many others. The song was on the one hand a reaction to this time and on the other hand an activist interaction into the changing circumstances of the new Germany. Grandiose live band!

Die Ärzte were not formed in 1993, they were RE-formed then, though, hence the emergence of Bela and Farin from their caskets and the funeral as a setting for the video. Rod Gonzalez, the man in the middle, joined the band then. However, there is a long list of songs from the 80s. You should check it out. In the beginning, the bad was considered to be just a bunch of punk kids, cheeky troublemakers, with no real depth. And a lot of their songs are like that, but there are a lot of elements there that attack societal norms. After the band's reformation in 1993, their first release, Die Bestie in Menschengestalt, contained a lot of songs that, in good old punk tradition, rebelled and pointed out things that were wrong in society. To make up for it, the following album Planet Punk, was slightly less provocative, though the single "Ein Song namens Schunder" or "Schunder-Song" addressed the subject of bullying and striking out against your tormentor for the first time. If you are learning German, I suggest that song.

Great Reaction and interpretation to this song! Other great songs of Die Ärzte are Unrockbar, Rebell and Capt. Metal. The lead singer Farin Urlaub also released a few solo albums with the Farin Urlaub Racing Team which are also worth listening to.

For someone who grew up in East Germany after the reunification and the upcoming violent fascist movement, this anti-fascist song still gives me goosebumps everytime--

Nice review! Nothing much to add, maybe one little anecdote : When I was 12, I was staying in a summer camp run by the protestant church, and there was a summer fest where the kids were supposed to do a little performance for the parents. One group of little girls did act as a band and the song they performed to was starting with "...di bist wirklich saudumm, darim geht's dir gut, Hass ist deine Attitüde.." You could already see the smile freeze on the face of the Christian camp officials, and on some of the parents too. It was 94, the album Bestie in Menschengestalt was out one year, and I think it was also the year Green Day and The Offspring became really popular in Germany. We as soon to be Punk Rockers of course knew what was to come later in the song, and of course the more relaxed parents in the audience too... The song ended quite abruptly when these little girls started to shout who oh oh - ARSCHLOCH😁

I am from Germany and this is my favourite song...and for all they don‘t know what Springerstiefel means thats the Boots from the N@zis

@@lukasschopf8715 well springerstiefel were worn by the nazis during the second world war. they still get used by the bundeswehr as far as i know. but many many people associate springerstiefel (especially with white laces!) with neo nazis nowadays. which is wrong, because only springerstiefel, with normal laces, are just shoes that are very robust and yes it is true that they are especially worn by some groups {goths, punks (^) metalheads etc.} but just because you wear them doesn’t mean you identify as a member of one of those groups. and with that said, i really don’t think that they worn the springerstiefel as a sign or something for the nazis

@@deborah3955 Well, they where only used by the paratroops. The "Fallschirmjäger" or "FallschirmSPRINGER" that's the reason why they're called Springerstiefel - driect translation: Jumperboots. They are actually a bit different than normal militaryboots.

Damn this brings me back to my youth. They were the first band I ever saw life Berlin 2001. I dont listen to them that much anymore but they still are classic. As for good suggestions Rammstein, Toten Hosen and Die Ärtze songs are all over the comments they never disapoint. But since I dont like to repeat everthing the other commentators already mentioned here are some good things to check out, either privatly or even in a reaction If you want something on the older side I´d definetly advise for Jochim Witt with either DIe Flut or Der Goldene Reiter both are really epic and on the newer side I would say AnnenMayKantereit with Pocahontas or Barfuß am Klavier.

Nothing to add in terms of the song's meaning as it's already well-explained in the comments! Die Ärzte have many more great punk/ alternative rock songs to offer. Another favorite of mine would be 'Junge'. Also make sure to check out the Farin Urlaub Racing Team! DÄ guitarist (and one of the singers) Farin Urlaub runs that one, it's equally cool in my opinion. Real great video. Schrei nach Liebe is one of my all time faorite songs and a modern calassic in germany. Cool music, good arrangement and most important is massage and sadly still ever in time (aktuell?) But I´m happy I found you`re video. Maybe because yesterday I uploadet a concert video me and my band were playing Schrei nach liebe. As I said cool stuff I´m going to check out some moore. Maybe some day you may make a Video about a real old german traditional "Das wandern ist des Müllers Lust" ;-) :-D Stay healthy and rock on
