i was thinking he implyed that she was beaten? like in movies if you show up at the hospital bruised beacuse of domestic violence you usually state that you "fell down the stairs" as a cause to the damage, but hey, could be either of these suggestions.

More specifically, he's implying somebody (most likely his dad) pushed him mum down the stairs when she was full-term (or nearly full-term)

It's more likely to the fact that Dave's mother tried to kill the child when she was young because she was too poor to bring the child into the world / he was an accident. It's common cause for women of extremely low poverty who are pregnant to hurt themselves ("fall") in order to stop the pregnancy of a child they cannot afford to raise. Dave is saying that he believes that he was never planned and his mother (or whomever) tried to terminate his pregnancy yet he survived in the hospital--a testament to yet another tribulation he has been through in life.

This is an absolute masterpiece. I’ve listened to it dozens of times since release and the last two minutes make me cry every single time.

A lot of people miss the triple in the "Flora" line...The 3rd layer is that flora is also inside your stomach/digestive system. So remember the line from "Panic Attack" about seeing a man guts hanging out. The knife also is cutting through somebody's stomach(flora)!

In the Uk Flora is a type of margarine, ie butter substitute. Most well known brand is Flora, hence the knife.

Huge amount of respect for sitting through the last part of the song without pausing. The sound of a mother crying is universally one of the most upsetting things that we can all instantly relate to.
