I think part of the difference is the density of traffic on the roads here in the UK. I get the impression that roads in the USA are wider and everything is spread out a lot more. That being said, I recall driving from Los Angeles Airport to Palm Springs on the I-10 during rush-hour on a Friday afternoon and it was an absolute nightmare - it was more akin to a racetrack and since people could overtake on either side, we had to keep out wits about us. To compound the problem, they drive on the wrong side of the road in the USA.

We drive on the left Steve, so if that's a normal road with 2-way traffic, then you have to turn right from the left hand lane. If it was a wider road, there might be a central area to pull into before turning. So if he was signalling right, he would slow down in the left lane and then turn when nothing was coming the other way. Which is an absolutely stupid time for a bike to pass.

I also read the other day that more than half of the speed cameras in the UK are out of action, though motorists will not know which ones are and which ones aren't. Steve, we also have "traffic calming" speed bumps ("sleeping policemen") on some roads to slow down traffic. Other similar roads have markings painted on them which look like speed bumps from the driver's seat but are actually a completely flat road (what they call, in art and architecture, a "trompe d'oeil"). Only those familiar with that particular road would be aware of the deception.

6:21 we have overhead gantry signs on our motorways (equivalent of interstate) with often one large board giving messages about hazards, warning conditions ahead, or if there aren't any the average time to a junction so people know how well the road is flowing. The small boards above each lane indicate the speed limit if there is a hazard ahead (so they'll tell traffic to slow down), or if a lane is closed due to an accident etc. Of course there will be emergency/assistance services there too, but the overhead warning signs give more advanced notice so people should take more care and slow down/move over in advance of the problem ahead. On some motorways, called "smart motorways" they even use the "hard shoulder" (emergency lane) as a driving lane in heavy traffic periods so the warning boards tell you which lanes are open for you to drive in. There's even one motorway near Birmingham (IIRC) which has no central divider and which can have more or fewer numbers of lanes allocated to traffic in each direction depending on whether traffic is flowing into or out of the city at different times of day, so the warning boards would tell motorists which lanes are open in each direction at that time.

  • @petersmithm9

Those flashing lights at about 6:40 are part of a variable speed system used in the UK on motorways. When the traffic is congested they reduce the speed limit and tell you what the new limit it. They also have speed cameras fitted to generate income if you exceed the limit.

The speed cameras are mostly in towns and on motorways and major roads. Also in accident hotspots. We have thousands of miles of country roads and some motorway without speed cameras. Yes, it was an Irish accent! On British roads, cars do NOT take priority over other roadusers like cyclists, pedestrians, riders etc.

Driving standards have fell dramatically in the UK over the last 10 years or so. I dont know if its the level of training that has changed, distractions like phones, or just a change in attitude. I perfectly understand why so many people have cameras in the cars now and insurance rates are always going up.

The guy on the bike at c 11.35 had right of way. It's the driver's job to avoid him (and any other obstacle) as he joins the road. I've had that happen - just cycling along on the road, past a side street, and a car pulled out of the junction straight into me. It is NOT the cyclist's fault. He is proceeding properly along the road. The person driving across the road was fully at fault there.

Hi there from England. Have you not watched driving vids from America? Please watch some, they are terrifying. Also our cars don't seem to disintegrate like yours. Yes we have speed cameras, but not everywhere. Also remember that UK has many narrow little lanes. There are Mways, A & B roads and the rest. Two way roads when turning right you pull to the crown of the road to turn right as you would make a left turn on such a road. As you saw it is not advisable to go fast on single track country lanes.👵🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🌹

As a Brit living in Leeds, (and as someone who's been driving all over the country for 10 + years) I can assure you that most drivers do not behave like this! There are some instances where people don't look where they're going, but the best thing for any driver to do is to keep your distance, presume, and prevent things from going wrong, and this is true for any country. We drive on the left side of the road here, so it's probably difficult to wrap your head around certain aspects of how our roads work, but eventually it does start to make sense. Keep up the good work!

There were at least a couple of "driver realised way too late that they wanted to be in the far-right-hand lane to make a right turn at a light controlled junction, and stopped in a not-turning lane" situations towards the end there. Solid double white lines down the middle of the road means "neither direction is allowed to overtake here" (save for some exceptions for very slow-moving tractors). If it's solid one side and dashed the other, the traffic on the dashed side is allowed to cross it to overtake. You might be interested in looking at the "hazard perception" part of the theory driving test (see youtube vid ids SdQRkmdhwJs and Y4CU4k4u3Vc). This was introduced in 2002 and requires you to watch some video clips and click the mouse when a hazard is likely to develop. This was introduced to directly test for the development of that "spidey sense" - the feeling that someone is about to do something (often stupid) needing you to react. You have to pass the theory test (all done on computers now, generally at the testing centre) before you can book your practical driving test with an examiner.

Generally only certain roads have speed cameras, and when they do there is a sign warning of them, so people can quite easily avoid them. Country lanes don't tend to have them. However, the police do carry out speed checks with specialist vans or speed guns on the side of the road without warning. Usually these temporary checks are done when a particular road has become rampant with fast drivers.

I am British & have retired to live in Bangkok with my Thai family. I no longer drive! In the UK I took a course of advanced riding & passed my advanced motorcycle test; I also passed my advanced car test & became an Observer / Guidance driver, helping others to pass their advanced car test. Advanced motoring is mostly about safety. Risk taking has no part in advanced motoring. You do NOT overtake at a junction. Blowing the horn has one use - to inform other road users that you are there, not to show displeasure. Observation is paramount, if another road user is likely to cause conflict form an early plan to avoid collision. Shouting & swearing will do no good & 50 tons of articulated truck directly behind will crush you like a paper cup when you hit the brakes & it brakes hard, jack knifing & taking out a queue of people waiting for a bus & several other cars. An epitaph that says “I may be dead but it wasn’t my fault,” does you no good at all. 🙏
