Always surprised how little Americans know about the Netherlands eventhough so much in the US came from the Dutch. Words like coleslaw, stoop, brandy, boss and even dollar all come from Dutch words. And many more. But also names in cities like New York are Dutch, like Brooklyn (Breukelen), Flushing (Vlissingen), Harlem (Haarlem) Long Island (Lange Eiland), Coney Island (konijnen eiland what means rabbit island) etc etc etc, ALL Dutch.

6:00 hagelslag is always put on bread with butter. The butter is there to keep the hagelslag on the bread. Please note that hagelslag is very tasty and crunchy, not the same as sprinkles you put on ice or cake.

The pink and blue "sprinkles" are called muisjes or little mice and are sugar coated aniseeds. Also hagelslag here is made of actual chocolate, so milk chocolate hagelslag has to contain at least 33% cocoa by mass and pure or dark chocolate hagelslag may contain as much as 70% cocoa by mass. They aren't anything like the fake chocolate sprinkles that you know in the US. If you're curious about hagelslag, your best bet is to find either Venz or De Ruijter brand online or in a Dutch store. Yes, there still are ships like that, though I think they're all replicas. Though there is a lot incorrect in the video you watched. So please don't think of it as being representative of our country, history, language or culture.

I guess they haven’t heard Chinese and Japanese and Turkish / similar languages if they think the Dutch spoken by speakers that use the hard G is harsh - now those are very harsh languages, while Dutch is very soft like English especially with the soft Gs!

I am actually a quite advanced level in Dutch after learning it for a few months, and even my pronunciation in Dutch sounds quite natural - when I memorize the words, I also memorize the pronunciation, so it kinda comes naturally now, as I know over 7.000 base words in Dutch, and I use the soft Gs and the soft Rs and the Americanized R aka the gooise R and it sounds very soft and very pretty, and it’s more about the voice, actually, so if one’s voice is soft and high with a light tone, it will make the language sound soft, and if one’s voice is naturally harsh and deep it will make the language sound harsh!

Dutch chocolate sprinkles taste good. U'd be surprised, just don't try to put American sprinkles on your bread.

Indeed, you can't really compare the two. American sprinkles are basically just sugar and starch with a little bit of flavouring and artificial colouring. Hagelslag is proper chocolate.

Dutch & English also have the best bad words! English has a lot more tho and lots of synonyms! The most epic sounding words! Besides, there are almost no non-pretty words in Dutch & English, and it’s like maybe one or two non-pretty words in 1.000, so it isn’t easy to find non-pretty words in Dutch & English! Dutch & English are the prettiest languages in every way, and they follow the most logical patterns, which give the words that perfect flow and harmony, and Norwegian and Welsh etc also come close! Germanic languages have almost only pretty words and are the best languages ever, and, Celtic languages also, and then most Latin languages like Portuguese / French / Gallo / Catalan / Italian etc!

That's just a bunch of sugar, yeah, that is true, but our bread has way less sugar than most American breads, and you usually buy it freshly baked. Even (almost) every supermarket has a bakery that makes top quality fresh bread every single day, meant to eat on the same day or to put in the freezer, because it is not sprinkled with to much sugar, salt and conservatives. And on top of that non sweat bread, it is actually pretty damn good. I can imagine that it is not likable on those sweet types of bread that are exclusively available in most country's. Many country's I traveled to didn't sell the bread that we (and most of europe) think is normal.

Coming from the Netherlands and hear somebody say: “ I don’t know anything about the Netherlands” sounds like you were born in a cave! The Dutch founded the biggest city in the US for example, so you must heard something about The Netherlands I guess. We had to learn about The American revolution and Civil War and we knew the names of every US state and much more growing up.

Hagelslag is more like chocolate sprinkles than actual sprinkles. Also the pink and blue variety are actually not Hagelslag but something completely different called Muisjes (translates to mice or little mice) and are made from aniseed.

Doors are indeed higher in new houses. Normally they were 2 meters high, now around 2.15 or 2.20 high. Also kitchen blocks are higher nowadays. There's a history about swearing with diseases. In early times they were afraid getting an illness themselves so when angry with someone, they wished it on them. Hagelslag is ALTIJD with butter, otherwise it falls off. And yes, it's very very tasty because it's not those cheap sprinkles like in the US but high quality chocolate. And it's really not that much, when you would put it together it might be one little block of chocolate. And chocolate isn't unhealthy. Wilders is just nuts. He doesn't like foreigners but the reason he dyes his black hair blond is because he's ....a foreigner and so is his wife.

Usually saying stuff like, kanker lekker, kanker ziek, kanker... Is used by the younger generation. I'd say people aged about 35-40+ still have a stigma around the use of the word kanker so it's used way less in those circles. I'm 100% sure if you would spend 1 hour in a current dutch highschool it would make up for those 15 years of barely hearing kanker

When Dutch people tell you to really scrape your throat when pronouncing the ggg's, you can ignore them I grew up in Limburg, the most southern province of the Netherlands, and we're known for our soft g's. I speak Dutch with an accent and friendly g's and never had any problem communicating with my Amsterdam colleagues. So, rather concentrate on short vowels and the weird 'sch' sound if you want to learn speaking Dutch.

I don't. I actually don't like Suriname food at all, it's far too spicey for me. Not saying it's bad food btw, just very spicey.

The harsh Dutch is only spoken in some provinces. The rest of the Dutch don't suffer from throat cancer or have a desire to sound like a wood chipper in overdrive with a harsh G, they have the civilised "soft" G.

It's probably the other way around. Most dutch people speak with a hard g, whereas some provinces have a soft g

That’s not true - most speakers of Dutch use soft Gs and medium Gs, especially the younger ones, and it’s usually the oude speakers that use the harder Gs!

I am the only Lady / Ladies (wom’n are the exact opposite of ladies / other big terms) and I am the only lovable being and the only wf / gf / bride etc - also, there is such thing as a soft G and most speakers of Dutch use the softer Gs actually!

Dutch is the prettiest and most refined language in the world with the most pretty and poetic words, like English, and most speakers use soft Gs, and don’t sound anywhere close to that sound that he exaggerated, and even the hard Gs don’t sound as harsh as his - dude has no idea what he’s talking about, about Dutch sounding harsh, and one can simply use the soft Gs, as most younger speakers do, and in Belgium they also use the soft Gs!
