Those wings were heavy. Approx. 50 kg (110 lbs). That's one of the reasons why Till is walking so slowly. Imagine carrying them on your back AND singing flawlessly at the same time. He's a freaking LEGEND!

The band was named after the military base. Their first hit was called Rammstein and was about the well known plane tragedy during an airshow that went bad and planes crashed into the crowd. As for Till's physical condition, he used to be an olympic swimming, so you can still see he's very strong (look at his arms). The Engel wings harnass was so heavy that at a certain point they had to hook it up, because it wasn't doable over time. You can imagine when you're carrying so much weight, it puts enormous pressure on your chest, so getting enough breath to properly sing is almost impossible. Yeah, talking about dedication, this band has it, 200%.

Rammstein is one of the most famous metal bands and are living legends with the same line-up for nearly 30 years. They are considered the best live band in the world and the greatest rock/metal show om the road in these days, especially when it comes to showmenship, pyro and fire. Above all, Rammstein uses pyro quite differently than all other bands. Rammstein's music is a mixture of techno (electronic music) and metal (= industrial metal), although Rammsteins origins are in punk music. Rammstein concerts are a life time experience that you will never forget. Their videos are art but also often controversial. Rammstein also refers to classical German literature, e.g. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's. Several of their songs are related to controversial and taboo subjects such as sadomasochism, homosexuality, intersexuality, incest, pedophilia, necrophilia, cannibalism, pyromania, religion and sexual violence. Also several of their songs are allegedly inspired by real-life events or politics. Rammstein lyrics are very deep and are also often used in school and universities around the world to learn German. There are people who learn German only because of Rammstein. Rammstein fans are considered to be the craziest and most fanatical fans in the world. In concerts from the hardcore fans all over the world it is expected that you can sing along with the German lyrics even if you don't speak German.

Usually for the song "Engel" his wings are connected to some strings and then during the show he suddenly lifts off and hovers several meters above the stage. Just Imaging him, singing about not wanting to be an angel, while he is flying as flaming angel in the air above everyone... their live Performances are amazing and they change costume in between to match the songs and also the effects are matched with their song. Btw, you can still feel the heat of the flames 150ft from the stage. Imagine such a show going on for several hours. It's the greatest live Performance in the world, and everyone should see it live at least once. Only then you'll understand what a real live show is...

Saying "God knows I don´t want to be an Angel" while setting his wings on fire is epic and a deep meaningful gesture.. Fire is the symbol of "hell" the total opposite of being "an Angel" and what he don´t want to be. Also I like to mention that the whole German lyrics of that song "Engel" - but especially the chorus - are basically written in the style/wording of how classic German children fairytales are written...that´s why for instance "clouds go to sleep" and don´t just "disappear" and why the chorus is filled in the background with "child like voices" which unfortunately doesn´t come across that much in this life performance but at the studio recording of that song the chorus lines are solely sung by that female child like sounding voices mimicking Angel´s voices and Till just sings the last chorus line "God knows I don´t want to be an Angel" Well although their life performances are undisputable epic you also have to watch their videos of their songs, Bro.. For instance their video of the song "Deutschland" will blow your mind entirely, first of all because of the production quality because that video comes across like a high level movie production, and contextwise in behalf of "what´s going on there" it will totally confuse you, because I assume you are not familiar with 1000 years of German history and every second and every single scene is an abstract reference to a German history event .

On some other note, to get an idea of how huge their shows are lately, their stage on the stadium tour requires like 1300 tons of freight dispatched on almost 80 trucks, it's 200ft wide, 100ft deep and the highest point is 120ft heigh. It takes 70 hours to build and requires a staff, locals included, of around 500 people.

I don't know which, and to what extent the inspiration etc., but I am sure I recall reading about it somewhere. it's a great track though, the lyrics and the story they tell. Till's lyrics though, throughout and consistently, are just so exceptionally good. The word play, the nuance and ambiguity, the depth of meaning, everything!

The wings weigh in at around 50kg but he doesn't wear them like this now as he hurt his back through wearing them. They are now suspended on cables and are lowered to the stage where Till steps into them wearing a harness and has a support to stand on so he isn't carrying their whole weight. Still impressive though.

Till has an amazing singing voice as well. German poetry / folklore is very rich and goes back deep into forgotten ages. Lord of the Rings was greatly inspired by German folklore as well (a.o. Wagner's Ring der Nibelungen, Nibelungenlied, etc.). Nibelungen are more or less what you would call Dwarfs in English.

About the abstract lyrics: "The song means what the song means TO YOU" [Tuomas Holopainen, Nightwish] is a very fundamental vision to songwriting. Tuomas will NEVER say anything about his intentions with the lyrics, because it will always shatter someones personal interpretation. And that is where the magic is: when you can overlay your own thoughts and experiences on top of those lyrics. Then it all gets deep and personal to the listener.

Oh yeah, Till Eulenspiegel! ❤ One of my favorite stories is when Till Eulenspiegel went into an Inn and ordered food. When he smelled the delicious food from the kitchen, he got so excited he lost his hunger. He didn't actually eat what he got served, and when he was asked to pay for it he just grabbed his bag of coins, pulled out the right amount to pay for the meal, then slowly let them fall back in one by one and the coins made a clearly audible clanking noise when they hit each other in the bag. Then he got up and left. ^^

Till is a true poet (even released some poetry books - some poems are the basis for songs, e.g. Schwarz from their newest Album Zeit) and theatrical performer. Since my very first Rammstein-gig (back in 1997) I‘ve been saying that these concerts are a kind of epic rock-opera. Glad you recognized all of this by watching/reacting to a couple of videos. 👍🏻🤗 While many songs of them have special show-moments, I‘d recommend to check out Mein Teil & Ich Tu Dir Weh. I‘m sure you‘ll love these too. 😊 And, just in case you want to expand on great metal acts from Germany, you might want to give Electric Callboy a go: They‘re on a huge roll right now and are touring the world pretty constantly with their feelgood bland of Metalcore (with lots of pop and techno elements). They always manage to put a smile on my face with their videos and you might never get out of that rabbit hole again. So, be cautious. 😉

Hey guy, really nice you found your way to rammstein. You were right, Ramstein (one m) was a US-airforce-base in germany. There was once a horrible flight-show accident, with a lot of dead visitors. The band is a east-german metal band. They named themselfes after this event. so this is the first double meaning in their history, I think. "Engel" means "angel". I first saw your first video of "du hast" you are right. There is a double meaning of this song. "Du hast" means at first "you have" but when you speak it in german it also means "you hate". so they are literally singing: you... (du) you hate... (du hast) you hate me (du hast mich), .. and so the friendly vow for the marriage becomes the opposite. They are in all of their lyrics most of the time like this double meaning. This band is very popular, because they pick always controversial topics (eating humans (they made a song about a german canibal), bondage, giving pain to others, various sex practices, a guy who hold a girl over years in his cellar (josef fritzl, an austrial sex abuser) ans a lot more offensive topics.) so there is a lot to explore of the meaning of their song. you have to know the german language and you have to know a lot of stories, they are reffering!

I saw Rammstein (pronounced Ram-shh-tine) on that actual tour in 2010 (Made In Germany tour) and I was 20 feet from the stage and I can confirm that when the pyrotechnics go off, your face stings from the heat. Also I'd like to point out that the keyboard player (Flake) was walking on 2 treadmills throughout 90% of the whole gig. And for anyone who doesn't already know they took the name from the Ramstein air show disaster which happened on Sunday, 28 August 1988 during the Flugtag '88 airshow at USAF Ramstein Air Base near Kaiserslautern, West Germany.
