American Pharoah: a bid for the Triple Crown (2015)

In 1978 Affirmed became the (so far) last Triple Crown winner. Since him 12 horses have fallen short at the end in their bid for racing immortality.
This year there is another chance: American Pharoah can become the 12th crowned thoroughbred in history. Bob Baffert had already failed 3 times, Victor Espinoza 2 times. Maybe their moment has came in the 2015 edition.

I think Pharoah will get it done. I can't be sure, of course, but I just have a feeling that I didn't have when it came to other Triple Crown hopefuls like California Chrome. I think AP will pull it off, though not because he's exceptionally talented, but because his competition is so mediocre. This Belmont field is very weak. AP will win just because everyone else in the field is a donkey.

***** Well my opinion is quite different. As Ahmed Zayat said: this generation is extremely talented. The Kentucky Derby is a perfect example for this, AP really had to fight for the victory. The Preakness was totally his race, this horse loves the mud but I think the Belmont will be tough. I really root for him but I won't be depressed if Frosted, Materiality or even Mubtaahij runs him down. It can't be more dramatic than Real Quiet's race anyway, hah. But let's just see what happens I'm so excited. I'm prepared for everything...

TheUthopia Firing Line ran a great race in the Derby, but he won't be a contender this time obviously, so I don't think he's relevant. Out of the horses going to the Belmont, I think they are rather mediocre. Frosted might have a chance, but Materiality and Mubtaahij both blew it in the Derby. I don't think they'll beat AP. Of course if I am wrong I will eat my words and apologize for misjudging them, but at present I'm thinking AP will win the Belmont just because his competition is lousy. But sure, no matter what happens, nothing can be more dramatic than the Real Quiet/Victory Gallop Belmont. Or, in the event of a successful sweep, nothing can be more dramatic than the Affirmed/Alydar race. So either way, I doubt there will be anything that can shock us more than the races we've already seen.

TheUthopia Well, turns out I was right. Congratulations to him, and the finishing time was actually surprisingly good, but he was hardly tested by that pack of mediocre horses.

TheUthopia Indeed. People have been waiting for this for a long time. Personally I'd much rather AP was the one to end the drought than California Chrome last year or a lot of the other Triple Crown hopefuls before him. I just didn't get the same feeling of potential from them as I get from AP.
