Always watch your video's, aswell as Sam's so it was nice to finally meet him last carnaval. I myself am a part of the guys with the horses, so yes we are there to safely escort the prince from point A to point B. There is nothing like Oeteldonk, I can tell you that. I live up to these moments every year. I can't express how much it does to me that foreign people/youtubers like you get a glimpse of what Carnaval in Oeteldonk means and how different it is from other city's in the Netherlands and that you and almost everybody is so positive about it. Lovely to see this🥰

Dutch carnival is still a Roman Catholic feast/festival. That's why it starts a few days before Ash Wednesday! and it has some rules. At the date 11-11 (november the eleventh) of the previous year the new "Prince" (nowadays it could be "Princess") is elected. In most villages and city's, the identity of the new Prince is kept secret.Until the festivities start 3 or 4 days before Ash Wednesday. In Oeteldonk an elected Prince remains Prince until the "council of eleven" decides else. On the Sunday mass, everybody wears the colours of the Prince. Even the real mayor (Catholic or not) has to attend, with the colours of the Carnival Prince. Because the public transportation companies understand that carnival is of great importance to small cities and villages, the compagnies try to keep the carnaval spirit high by adjusting the real timetable a few minutes. All for tradition!. The arrival of the train carrying the Prince of "Oeteldonk". Is a special service "train"! The doors aren't orange but yellow (NS), you missed the fact that the doors opened at 11.11 am. and the fact that the prince stepped on the dedicated tile on the platform. The number 11 is very important in Dutch Carnaval. Every city /village that has an Catholic history celebrates Carnaval and has it's own traditions.

This is not correct. The Prince of Oeteldonk, always called Amadeiro, is NOT chosen shortly before carnaval. He is appointed and officialy is Prince for his life. All princes do not wait until they die, but step down after a couple of years. Since 1882 we now have the 26th Prince. Amadeiro XXVI. So an average reign of almost 5 year. Pom van der Elst, Amadeiro XVI, was prince for 15 year and is record holder.

Small correction at 10:35. Oeteldonk carnaval is actually very much like the Rhenish carnaval in Limburg and west Germany, different from west Brabant where the culture is more akin to Burgundian carnaval. As an illustration: the hat movement over the shoulders is supposed to make fun of the Prussian militarism and monarchy around the 19th century in Germany. Alaaf nevertheless

  • @kinsella9455

Completely wrong. Carnaval in Oeteldonk is not comparable with the Reinisch German carnaval they celebrate in Limburg and lots of other towns and villages in Brabant. It is Bourgondic, just as carnaval in Bergen op Zoom and Roosendaal. Yelling Alaaf is even prohibited in Oeteldonk. Our traditions are totally different than those in Limburg but resemble a lot like the traditions in Bergen op Zoom. Besides, carnaval in Oeteldonk dates back to around 1350 and is the oldest in the Netherlands.

So, might be mentioned already: but Dutch carnaval is on the same date as Mardi-Grass (translation: ‘fat tuesday) the day before Ash Wednesday. It was co-opted by the Catholics and connected to Easter, but actually precedes it: originally a festive moment at which the last winter-reserves were consumed in one big feast. Also important: this is Brabants carnaval (one of the Dutch provinces), whereas Limburgs carnaval (most Southern Province) is somewhat different (and better 😉).

Hey hey hey. Love this video and your channel. Also brings a smile to my face when you comment a video. But now some fun facts I’m from The Netherlands. (Not holland). carnaval is mostly celebrated below the big rivers. The provenance Brabant and limburg are the places to be when carnaval is celebrated. The rest of the country doesn’t celebrate it that mutch. Every city were they celebrate carnaval has his own prince or prinses. Also there’s a jeugd prins (prince of the childeren) normaly a child from the age of 12/13 years. Then you have the roat van elf in the limburg. This is like a commission of eleven people that al have separate taske s. Helping the prince during these days. Also the name from the village changes during carnaval. Example my town is called “Stein” but during carnaval it’s called “ Bokkeriek” translation kingdom of the goats 🐐. Than you have some differences we dress up like everything you can imagine chickens clowns SpongeBob name it nothing is crazy enough. There are some no go like dressing up like hitler or bin Laden. So yes Al lot is possible during carnaval but there are boundaries. Carnaval has something te do with religion. Manly it’s the period before het vasten. Het vasten means don’t drink or eat candy etc etc be a nice boy or girl. So you may party hard for a few days and than be good. Now comes the good news we only still do the carnaval we don’t do the vasten anymore. When you are born in the south of The Netherlands you normally have carnaval in your blood. If you don’t celebrate carnaval you go on wintersport during those days. But for all other people it’s party looking to parades and falling a sleep in the bar.

I absolutly hate carnaval and I live in the south were they party hard. So this year we thought we go to Zwolle for 3 days. In the north only to find out that the carnaval virus had crossed the rivers ( as we call it) to the north and they partied just as hard in Zwolle. Bummer!

I'm sure others talk about it, but I want to too! Dutch (and Belgian) carnival is *not* like the Brazilian. Okay, maybe a bit with the music, the parade, dressing up funny and all that. The origin is very interesting though. While it is probably inspired by the Italian masked parties, it got its own special twist. It became a festival in which social status and positions didn't matter, or were reversed even. This in a time where you could be punished for talking disrespectfully to a clergyman, noble or patrician. People were even allowed to make fun of the upper classes without fearing retribution! I mean, a lot of it is a downright parody of having the actual prince visiting.
