Shit you are right. It was not the confederations cup. It was a warm up tournament to the world cup. As afterwards the confederations cup kinda served the same purpose, I guess that caused my confusion

The goal vs France wasn't at the World Cup, but the year before. At the World Cup Warm Up tournament we used to have, the Confederations Cup, I think

I remember me and my mate Jermaine as kids playing football at the field behind my nan's house, practicing free kicks, trying to bend the ball ĺike Roberto Carlos, we were both 11, we learned how to bend the ball a bit, but nowhere near that much 😂

I admired every person that stood in wall and actively tried to prevent the ball from going in in Roberto Carlos' free kicks :D that's some courage - you can see most people just running for their lives :D

Might want to look into Figo, one of the players you saw with Roberto at Madrid. He was actually the one that took most of the free kicks that could be a pass, in a team that had Roberto Carlos, Zidane and Beckham, even though it was a skill he picked up late in his career. He was mostly know for his feints, his assists and his passes. In his prime, he could carry a top team by himself, did so at Barça. Yes, he played for both.

He was a full back, not a striker, not a winger, a full back. This was in addition to all the other attackers on the field. That was the threat of that Real and Brazil team, anyone on that team could mess you up.

Bending the ball with the inward foot is about the easiest and most precice you can shoot. This is usually the first one you learn. Hitting it center on is the strongest. You can bend it outward with the outside of your foot and if its just a bit off the centerline of the foot it can get pretty strong. This is what Roberto Carlos does. Its the outside bend. You also see that his foot moves a bit inward and with that power you already expect this curve and have to plan for it. This means you need even more angle in the foot. And thats why he has to jump a little to get his other foot out of the way. You also might fall down if you dont do this jump because it pushes you off balance. Dont worry its pretty natural and comes automatically once you learn how to shoot this way. And then there is the knuckleball or whatever its called. You hit the ball center on but a bit higher on the foot. This is the most difficult technique of shooting. The goal is that the ball doesnt rotate at all. This makes it susceptible to random wind and thats why it can bend wierd up, down, right left and so on and even change direction. And this is also very difficult for the goalie.

In 2003 Roberto Carlos did one of his famous cannons shoots in a Real Madrid vs Juventus games, The GK Gianluigi Buffon was able to stop it, but ended in the hospital later with a broken hand. Small brake though, but the doctor and Buffon where shure it was from Carlos shot, cause that was the time it hurted. Also, there is this very wild clip of a Madrid vs Barcelona game where Carlos gets a clear shot to the frame and there is no GK, his only obstacle was Charles Puyol, Roberto shoots and Puyol stops the goal with hiv FACE, your heart legit stops beating for a second and can´t help but think Puyol died... he was alright, very hurted, but alright.

When I was framing the first home I ever built as a young man, I was nailing off a jack stud with a framing gun and the nail went through a knot and the 16 penny nail buried itself into the meat of my palm. I immediately pulled it out and sat down on the subfloor, as the dizziness started to set in. Can confirm, it f*****g hurts to impale your own hand. Also, Roberto Carlos was a specimen. I am glad I was able to watch him score (most) of these as they occurred.

Yeah right after this happened I got super dizzy, and I closed my eyes for like 30 seconds, when I opened my eyes, I couldn’t see anything. It was blurry and bright. My vision came back like 30 seconds later - freaking scary

This is almost uniquely a Brazilian thing too. Roberto Carlos, Adriano and Hulk all had a very similar shooting technique. It's also something we seem t have mostly lost in football, nowadays there is Valverde and that's about it I think.

The man was insane back in his day. Everyone remembers that legendary free kick trivela shot.

One of the reasons Roberto Carlos was way above average is that he played as a Left Back and still could outscore some strikers. I remember back in the 90's, playing Elifoot (an oldschoold Football Manager game) in which Roberto Carlos was the only defender in the game which would have a * stat, meaning he was one of the best scorers in game.

The thing is, Fullbacks back in his era "both LBs & RBs" we're defensively minded as if they were CBs playing down the flank, only him & few others that were offensively minded during that time.. Nowadays fullbacks & wingers are almost the same, but back then like I said fullbacks were like an extra CB down the flank

If you kick a ball hard not in its dead centre, then it will bend to some degree, and the wind is also a factor. Of course , pros practice all sorts of weird spins, especially free kick specialists. Roberto Carlos was the best, with his banana shots.

Those kick-ups you saw him doing are training-related only if someone didn’t practiced it in their youth, mainly because you learn most of your ball control technique in your formative years by playing around, either by yourself or with friends.

The amazing thing for me is the power and spin he could apply was at a time where the balls were a bit heavier then they are currently. Balls now are designed to be unpredictable, late 90s they were not the player made it happen

always remember, the brain takes from 0.15sto 0.3s to react to sth. now measure how long it takes the ball from the moment he shoots to crossing the goalline. so yes some of those shots are litterally impossible to stop.

sometimes it may feel like the shoot wasn't that fast and the goalkeeper was weak, but remember this goalkeepers are world class keepers , people that got filtered for years trough good teams and ended up chosen to play infront of the whole world. Defeating a keeper of that caliber with a shoot that barely lets him move an inch, means that shoot went over 100km/h . That is close to the speed of an arrow from an average power bow. to that u can add the curved trajectory caused by wind or player skill or both. If those keepers can't get it, 99.99% of the people you know won't get it also. unless it hits you in the stomach . and than you will have a very bad day.

I'm surprised that they didn't include some of his throw-ins because those were exceptional, too.😊 It would be so nice to watch some reactions to those legendary Pepsi and Nike (Cage tournament) commercials, but I guess they would be copyrighted right away. 😒

Maybe you don't know that those balls he was kicking are not like the ones we got nowadays... I mean, those balls weighted a lot more and were much harder to bend than the current ones! Plus with the rain those were really heavy!

You should research about two other brazilian players that used to have strong kicks as well. Branco which was another left back and Rivelino. Both of them can be compared with Roberto Carlos.

I disagree with you, Im from Argentina and i was a player, i trained 5 days per week and played in the weekends. 2 times per weak we had a training in wich we had to carry the ball juggling from one side of the pitch to another. You underestimate the absolute control, balance and first touch you can gain with that simple excercise. Best tecnical players in the world like Riquelme, Messi, Maradona, Roberto Carlos, Ronaldinho, Romario, Ronaldo Nazario, Rivaldo, Cafú, Aimar, Ortega, Del Piero, Totti, Baggio juggled and were juggling every day with the ball, for training, or for fun.

@@MatiasDypala As someone who also trained as a football player we never had such drills. Yes, everybody does it for fun, but you simply don't need it as a drill. Other drills are way more important. Just having a circle of players and juggling it with 1-2 touches seemed a lot more useful to begin with. To clarify I'm not saying it's useless to train it, it's just not necessary.
