And takeout from a restaurant is already overpriced because you're subsidizing dine in customers who get table service, real dishes and flatware, and the restaurant ambiance. Not going to waste my time checking to see if Uber Eats is $1 or $3 more expensive.

All your dining credit +10 could be $250 every year in your wallet instead if you didn't sign up for the gold. Better yet, just get the SavorOne or any 3x dining card + a grocery card like the custom cash

Good call on recommending creative duos. I use Ritz-Carlton for lounge access and car rentals (Primary CDW) with my Gold Card for food and plane tix domestically. I swap the Citi Premier for the Gold internationally, keeping the R-C.

Current setup is the Amex Gold, Venture X, and AAdvantage card. Pair perfectly with one another and even looking to add the Amex Platinum soon. My thought process behind having both VX and Amex Plat is that I get $150 off Plat fee from having a corp card and I don’t mind using it as a coupon book as I will use most of the credits it offers (at least more than the annual fees worth).

I signed up for the gold for the 90 k. I can’t justify keeping it after the first year. I am moving to Colombia and restaurants are the only purchases that will give me points. I already have the Capital One Venture X which basically pays for itself and the CSR which has lounge restaurant access which I use a lot.

Above all pair with the Blue business plus and you’ll never need Amex Platinum- trust me when I say this most people would say get the platinum but the gold does what the platinum does but just cheaper and more conveniently for people who travel one awhile - above all if your in pop jail Business Plus is the way to go as a pairing partner but if you can afford 700 get the platinum

How long after I apply for the Hilton aspire card should I cancel my delta reserve?

Doesn’t make sense to me. Can’t use any dining credits, shop Costco, and sapphire reserve for restaurants. Used for one year, and going to cancel it.

🍌 Amex Gold has been my primary points-earning card for the past few years, and I find that it pairs extremely well with the Amex Hilton Honors Aspire (annual free night award, quarterly airline fee credits, and elevated earnings on car rentals) and Amex Platinum (SkyClub and Centurion lounge access, airline fee credits, elevated status with Hilton, Marriott and National).

Was able to pick up the Amex Gold last year for 90K MR points a few months before the rule change. Whew!

@@drewski91 I had the Platinum before I got the Gold. The new rule states that in my case, because I already had the Platinum, I would not be able to get a sign on bonus be for the Gold. With the new rule, one must get the Gold before the Platinum if one wants both intro bonuses.

Thank you for the review. The Amex Gold card is a good card for dining/restaurants and getting the most out of the Amex ecosystem.

I have the CSR and I’m thinking about adding the Amex Gold to maximize the points since they worked some of the same airlines so I can transfer the points . I just want to make sure is the right move. TIA

Sebby, I feel you should still mention (even though it can become repetitive) that 4X with Amex is not necessarily better than 3X with Chase UR with let’s say dining multiplier.

Depending on the current categories, the freedom 5x can be a FAR better option, as well as custom cash 5x one category, both for no a.f or jumping thru hoops for "credits". The gold card is way over hyped

🍌 I'm doing Gold + BBP right now because I don't plan on traveling this year. I really wish the ED/EDP were better because I want an Amex replacement for shipping now that the Business Gold is dropping it soon.

I plan on getting the gold shortly. I have the citi premier but since they dont seem to be releasing any new premium credit card i need to move towards Amex i feel. I have the hilton aspire but am downgrading it since they removed lounge access. Gold status is enough for me with free breakfast.

Citi currently has something in the works for later this year, they also have plans to revamp the Citi Premier. Amex Gold is a solid option until then, and even after the fact excellent 4x categories!

A lot of times they don't count for delivery. Try it once and see what the transaction is listed as (Groceries, Retail, Online Order etc.)

I’ve had the card for almost 2 years now. Other than the $10 credit for Uber (which I don’t really use and when I tried using the credit when I was in Europe the credit somehow expired when the I still had 2 weeks) and the dining credit is okay as well. Maybe I’ll try to downgrade but don’t know which one to get. I have the chase preferred and looking for my next card

The Capital One SavorOne is a no-annual fee card with similar benefits, albeit with lower multipliers (3% on dining, entertainment, grocery and streaming). If you pair it with one of the Venture cards (Venture X, Venture, VentureOne), the cash-back becomes fully-transferable miles.

Amex Green would be your downgrade path, still excellent multipliers minus grocery with travel, transit, and hotel 3x.

Amex Gold + Venture X is my primary setup

Still worth it for me. Credits monthly are easy to use with pickup. Maybe spend $1-4 per entree with pickup option. Keeper card for me as long as the credits still stay the same (or ever increase!)

🍌 As a 29 year old living in a big city (LA), I have no problems with the credits for the Gold. I also visit my local Shake Shack once a month (team SmokeShack!) and have at least one weekend night a month where we're going out to bars with friends and this allows me to utilize the Uber credit. If it's more of a stay-in month, then Uber Eats it is. I also have the Platinum, which I love and get immense value out of (at least $800 a year). Swapping it for the Schwab Platinum this coming June, since I finally have enough stashed with the brokerage to get that $100 Appreciation Bonus! Sad that I no longer am eligible for the SUB, though. 🍌pair AEG with CSR as main travel card. Earn most MR through grocery/restaurant 4x. Don’t really use the credits. But P2 and I are flying from US to Europe RT in business for just fees/taxes, so I don’t mind paying for the card. 😊

No you cant, but I'll give you an example on what you can use your points on. I use my Gold Card for grocery shopping and inside of 5 months I had accrued enough points to equal $635. I used this as a statement credit($635 towards my balance) and it not only paid me back for my annual fee but gave me almost $400 off my balance...same as paying straight from your banking account. Like Sebby says you do need to do the math or it's not worth it. For me it is as I use it exclusively for the shopping and travel only, easier form me to track off the top of my head. The example I gave you was the points solely from my grocery shopping.

You can get the same points multipliers for dining and groceries without chasing $10 here and there every single month 🙃

🍌Pretty disagree on the Amex gold unless you are already a rideshare or grubhub user. The dining credits are limiting and the 4x isn't that great when the savorone is no annual fee with 3x back on most the same catagories. You'd have to cover 25,000 to 5000 in dining and grocery spend to recover the additional spend vs the annual fee with credits and the savorone won't change your spending habits the credits force you to do.

Hi Sebby! Question for you on a retention offer, for AMEX Platinum personal card. How is this deal in your opinion, $500 statement credit after $4k spend in 3 months. Plus $695 now for 69,500MR redeem? Does that seem good? I see it a 0.10cpp.

Imho this is the single most overrated card there is. The "credits" generally just lead to me spending money unnecessarily (unless I'm traveling and need to uber). When i can get fee free custom cashes for 5x/have freedoms/flex for 5x, it would be a hard pass from me even if i weren't locked out of a gold bonus (and most likely in gel) for opening /closing the plat/Schwab in the past. I can see the use case for some, but as a low spender, these cards just aren't for me

The Uber credit should never be valued at full. Since it’s a gift card you don’t earn points on those $10/month which you would by just using another card. It’s the same,e reason why the Venture X doesn’t pay you $5/yr or why you shouldn’t value the Sapphire Reserve/Venture X credit at full value. The dining credit could be valued at full value if you already use the service.
