Totally forgiven as we had our own weird foods in the 70's. There was an eccentric cook over here called Fanny Craddock..(don't laugh its true!) who I remember doing weird stuff like taking the yolks out of hard boiled eggs and mixing them with mayo cayenne pepper and blue food colouring and then piping it back into the egg white...Why I don't know. She is a hoot to watch bossing her assistants about. I'm sure you can find some of her vids on youtube.

The variations of 'shire' pronunciation is probably due to regional accents. As you already know, walk 20 minutes down the road and the accent is different, the colloquialisms are different and you can cause a riot by calling a bread roll a barm cake.

The pronunciation of counties ending in Shire will vary across the UK - where I come from Cheshire - Lancashire would be pronounced with Sheer at the end. Yet Shire horses would be pronounced shyer. They moved my county borders so I live in a different county now without moving to a different place.

You should take another look at the ghastly building shown immediately before the Banana/Ham/Custard thingy. This is Trellick Tower in west London, designed by a controversial modernist architect, who also annoyed James Bond author Ian Fleming when he designed some unattractive modernist houses close to Fleming's home. Ian Fleming had his revenge by using the architect's name as the villain in a James Bond novel; the character was repulsively ugly, cheated at cards, cheated at golf, maltreated women and was the world's greediest man. The architect's name was Erno Goldfinger.

Shire is pronounced the same as the US state of New Hampshire is, no need to over think it!! In the UK, biscuits are dry, snap when they are fresh and soft when they are stale. A cookie is softer when fresh and can go hard when stale (much the same as a cake sponge!!). So that plate was definitely biscuits to us and not a direct translation to cookie either!! 😁

This video was a great choice. Really enjoyable! I’ve got to say, a lot of us Brits are probably also confused about the history/changes in county boundaries/names etc! Absolutely thrilled that your great country (not county!) can lay claim to that incredible pudding/casserole!! If you are interested in more UK history, there is a fantastic tv series called Horrible Histories. It’s actually a kids educational programme, but it’s made with humour and is great for adults too. I used to work for Royal Mail and understand why the counties changed in that respect for the post.. it was all about how far an address is from the nearest mail centre... For example, I used to live near a town called Burton-upon-Trent which is in the county of Staffordshire, but the closest mail centre is actually Derby, not Stafford, so the county is Staffordshire but the postcode is DE (Derby), We have a village called Ashby-de-la-Zouche which is in the county of Leicestershire, but the nearest mail centre is Derby, (not Leicester) so residents of that village are in the county of Leicestershire with a DE postcode.. It was all about logistics , hence why we don't need to name counties on an address, Royal Mail can get your post to you with the first line of address and postcode only ! ....and also yes county borders were changed again in the 1970s for logistics and local council funding etc etc .. The village I lived in, in Leicestershire, used to be in Derbyshire, but borders changed because noone really wanted our villages and town 😂🤷🏽‍♀️ The sub-counties are mainly to do with local services, schools, waste collection, etc.. again, a logistics thing.. So I have just moved from North West Leicestershire to Hinkley and Bosworth... it's only a few miles apart, same county of Leicestershire, but our bins and waste collection are different , we have to apply for different council tax, different council offices.. Don't forget, we mostly live on top of each other like sardines here in the UK.. a border is literally a road, a sign, and can be nothing more than that, 1 mile is the difference between counties.. I live in the middle of five counties, right in the very centre of England.. Watching your video and recounting all of this has made my head spin, and I live here 😬😳🤣🤣🤣😲😳😂

Æthelstan - nowadays often spelled Athelstan* is considered the first king of England. A lot of people think it was Alfred the Great, be he was only king of Wessex. It's too long to get into here, but before then, England was divided into at least 4 kingdoms, and before that there were the Romans... *Now the th in Æthestan is pronunced with the unvoiced th (as sin south), but at the timee it was written with þ wich was used for both th sounds (as in the, too). However, given the way the name was given in Old Norse (the language of the Vikings) who had both sounds, written þ and ð respectively, it can be argued that it was a voiced th: Aðalsteinn. In the continental Scandinavian languages today the ð evolved into d, the þ into t (Thor, Þórr, has become Tor) pretty much consistently and systematically.

Hello lovely friends. If you enjoyed the Mapmen doing our counties, then I recommend you find their video on British place names, it's a hoot! FYI, being "ancient" I can actually remember the 70's. "The first episode of Rainbow" refers to a kids TV show (think Sesame Street, but simpler and cheaper). As to the concoction of bananas, ham and cheese sauce, I have no idea although I have had grilled banana with grilled bacon. It's actually way better than it sounds it should be. Confession time now, Natasha. I started to watch your last post about Christmas and all. but had to shut it off quickly. In the 3 months that I've been watching the pair of you, I have become so fond of you both (yes, I know it's dumb) that I truly hate to see either of you so upset. There is quite enough misery in normal life without dredging it up without reason. Love, hugs, kisses etc.....................................the ancient Englishman.

I live in Northamptonshire, which has, only this year, been split into two Unitary Authorities. It's currently a mess, with the two new authorities still working out how to split the old County-wide services like Libraries and Highways between them. I'm in North Northamptonshire but we had a new delivery of books into our local library which said property of West Northamptonshire on them. The government was forced to make some sort of change when the old County Council went bankrupt. They basically sold everything that wasn't nailed down (and some stuff that was) and built a new, no luxury spared, County Hall, which now stands empty.

Well 1970's cookbooks were a lawless wasteland, and plantain and prosciutto is sort of acceptable. What the Cheez Whizz was doing on there is a mystery. At 06.40 Um, well, the Union Jack thing is an urban myth. Quite a modern one actually which has a lot to say about social media and none of it good. A Jack was a flag flown by a ship. The Union flag flown from a navy ship was a Union Jack. It fell into common useage and back in 1908 the admiralty told the government of the day, in relation to the appropriateness of the Union flag being called the Union Jack by people, "Meh, whatevs bbz xoxox" (I summarize) and ever since it hasn't mattered until, well, y'know Facebook and that thing of telling people things whether they're true or not. Anyway, love the channel.

We do have parishes within counties and they have small councils, but they don't wield any power other than litter picking.. Tax is mainly the same everywhere including Wales Northern Ireland. And very similar in Scotland. The only tax that differs from town to town is council tax, which also differs from house size to apartment. No they aren't, they can't make laws like states can. If anything Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are more like states as they have their own governments like states. Counties are more like, well counties. Take lockdown for example, just like American states, the authority to shutdown lay with the devolved administrations in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Counties in England are ordered by Westminster/UK government, they have no say, they make no laws like individual states in the US do.
