American Couple Explores SOFIA Bulgaria 🇧🇬 for our *FIRST TIME*

Thank you for joining us on our adventures :)
Bulgaria is in a great location. Nestled in between five countries and the Black Sea, it’s ideal to stop here as we explore eastern Europe. But we didn’t really know much more than that when we decided to visit. Fortunately for us, Sophia is an amazing city and we couldn’t help but love it here.

There's also a lot to be seen around there - Tombs of the Thracian kings are not that far from Plovdiv and Shipka monument and the old capital of Bulgaria Veliko Tarnovo. And the magic of Rhodope Mountain in the south, but you might need a car to explore that magnificent mountain. And more than couple of days to be able to see all of that.

The building in the end of the video is sofia central military club, build by austrian architect for the bulgarian army, wich was called prussians of the balkans, cause we didnt had a lost battle in the third bulgarian tzardom-1878-to present day, also we dont have a captured flag on the batllefield, while we have flags from french,british,russian,italian,serbian,greek,romanian,turkish...etc armies and we are very proud with that.......historicly all our neighbours are our enemies and we used to be in war with all of them combined many times, for example 1913 second balkan war,and back in time during the rule of our first tzar(equal to emperor)simeon the great in the 9th century,he defeated all enemies on all borders and made bulgaria one of the three greates statez in europe next to eastern roman empire and the frankish empire....the title tzar originates in bulgaria and simeon is the first one, also the cirilic alphabeth is created in bulgaria ordered by simeon's father boris-michael in the 800s,when we addopted christianity, later we brought it to russia along with the tzar title ,cirilic alphabeth ,and our culture too.....boris -michael gave two million lambs for making books from their scins in order to preserve the alphabeth and to equipt our churches with holly books and the servise to be in bulgarian language.....we destroyed the so called three language dogma wich say that you can preach the gospel only in greek, latin or hebrew, cause western and eastern churches wanted our state in their church,so they declared both that our language is legal, even the pope blessed the alphabeth...cause our country was very powerfull they wanted us on their side....this fight continued up to 13th century when we became part of the western church for a while

The crack in the head of the statue is due to the way this person was assassinated. This is a statue of Mr.Stefan Stambolov, in his youth he was an anti-Ottoman fighter/revolutionary, and after the liberation of Bulgaria (1878) he became a politician. He was speaker of the parlaiment as well as prime minister in the period 1887-1984. After conducting a number of reforms that paved the way for the country's modernization after 5 centuries of Ottoman rule, he was also perceived as dictatorial and had a conflict with the Russian Empire in his foreign policy. The Russians, who basically liberated the country after a Russo-Turkish war in 1877-78, tried to exert greater influence in Bulgarian affairs but faced opposition by Mr.Stambolov and a number of other people. After he fell from power in 1894, he was assassinated in Sofia in the summer of 1895, around the area where the monument is. He was hacked to death, including a blow to his head, hence the crack in the statue. He is considered a true patriot though slightly controversial due to his strong-handed approach while in power.

Actually alot of tourists goes to Bulgaria, there are German, British and Scandinavian families who flocks to the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria every year in summer for all inclusive resorts because it's cheap and a short flight from anywhere in Europe, it's a much cheaper alternative to Greece and Bulgarian resort cities like Golden Sands and Sunny Beach are really popular. Sofia the capital though, which I find a really nice city, is not among the common tourist destinations in Bulgaria. But it's a country that primarily Europeans only go to, same can be said about Albania and the tourist resorts on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. I am going to the Bulgarian coast in September!

The one with the crack in the head is Stefan Stambolov (1854-1895) He was a freedom fighter durring the Ottoman times, and after the liberation of Bulgaria he became a brilliant politician(prime minister) and did a lot for the country, but he was anti-russian and pro European, a little overzealous and for that he had a lot of enemies, so they attacked him in the center of Sofia with a mace and cracked his head, he died soon after.

Hey, good video! The church you said you didn't understand why it is not on any guides is Св. Седмочисленици. It was built to be a mosque and was a mosque for a time. Then it was repurposed as a jail. During the time it was a jail people used to call it The Black Mosque, where the "black" part was a reference to it's purpose rather than the look. It was finally repurposed again as a church which it is to this day.

I am Bulgarian, so I will tell you. Most prices here are average or in the case of the restaurant maybe a bit more than average but so was the presentation and probably taste. Security is the best I personally have experienced. I haven't been scared in Sofia at night and I am paranoid due to the bad experiences I have had living in Malta. In fact, I am going back to my hometown so my child can be safe on the street and within our own community. There are bad things too, but they aren't for the tourists to think about usually(government, politics and some other things). What you need to know is that crime rate is moderate, but I wouldn't say we have too much of that here compared to other countries. I would say mostly pickpockets and bag thefts in tourist or very crowded areas are the most common ones. But in my personal opinion, it doesn't happen ALL the time and to everyone. I have never heard of anyone around me experience issues, nor have experienced any on a holiday (I speak English most of the time I go back home as the primary language with my partner is English, so people assume I am not local often..). As long as you aren't rude to people. I'd say you are safe. To be safer from potential pickpocketing, just have your wallet and documents in a pocket which is not reachable from outside people and always have back up cash, card or something juuuust in case. I do it anywhere I am too - for holidays or living somewhere. In Malta I don't even take out my ID card or passport out, just the residence card, so they are always safe home, out of reach even for potential break-in's.
