I think if you are accustomed to being around people who tend to fully enunciate it’s more difficult to understand people who don’t. With time you can adjust your ears to “fill in the blanks” for the omitted or muffled sounds. I fully understood the first guy and enough of the second two to get the gist of what they were saying.

  • @construct3

You prompted me to look online, and I found that some broadcasters got in trouble for making fun of his speech impediment, but I can't figure out what this impediment is. I'm from Texas, and I only missed a couple of his words. I took that for the difference in accent. I'm surprised that these two ladies couldn't understand him. Can you explain to me what his impediment is? I'd be interested to know. The one I had trouble with was Raheed Sterling. I could pick up maybe 40% of what he said. Once I tune my ears, I can usually pick up what most Brits are saying. I can't understand really thick accents from the west country and from northern England--Yorkshire, Geordie. I can often tune in on even thick Scouse, but it takes a little effort and close attention, and sometimes I fail. And there are accents in the U.S. that are difficult, too. At university, I had a roommate from far northeast Tennessee in Appalachia, and for the first two weeks, he had to repeat everything he said so I could understand him. I'm sure he found it irritating, but it took a full two weeks before I could understand him properly.

The confusion of Harry Maguire's accent was quite apt: He is a Yorkshire lad who has played in Manchester for a fair few years now, so that will have slightly softened his Yorkshire accent and moved it slightly towards a Manc accent. Of course, the Yorkshire pushes through the most, but the fact @Laurenade was unsure which to choose between Yorkshire and Manchester makes perfect sense.

Aussie here, first guy was actually not too difficult for me to understand, he wasn't the clearest with his speech but I still picked up most of what he was saying. I found that especially interesting since you all made similar points about the way he speaks to how Australians speak where there's more brevity between the words and they kinda meld a little as a result so maybe that has something to do with my relative ease at picking it up. Also, I do find it interesting that despite how big of a country Australia is there's not really any regional accents, its more a spectrum of Broad-General-Cultivated which is pretty much influenced by socio-cultural and/or economic background and level of exposure to media I suppose, with a little bit of ethnic mixing to provide a pretty decent outlier from that model. Like maybe there will be a greater diversity of ethnic mixing in Sydney while Melbourne will have more cultivated accents and most of Western Australia will be quite broad but by and large the accents are the same, just a bit of a different spread in each place.

Yet again, the English are passed of as British because their nation formed on Said island. When in reality the term British was already in use for a separate and distinct culture on Said island. This culture is now known as Welsh in the English language. British when applied to England and Scotland just means a geographical representation of the people of England and Scotland. Historically and Culturally, British only applied to Wales.

Lauren surely must be faking not being able to understand these! I got every word and I’m sure most English people would tbh - perhaps the next video could be guessing where players in the England women’s football team are from? 🤔 They have just got through to the finals of the Euros after all.

It's just a common banter that no one can understand what Harry Kane said. The moment she realised that it's him speaking. She just continues the trend.

I think the majority of Americans, let alone English speaking people would understand what Kane said. It's a pretty typical cockney accent

@@__dane__Kane does _not_ have a cockney accent, at least I'm fairly sure. From what I heard it sounds like a Bedfordshire-ish accent

Harry Kane has his own accent, Raheem Sterling’s is a multicultural accent influenced by Afro Caribbean communities he grew up in. This video makes things harder for her to understand because of the football jargon involved…….if you really wanted to confuse her you should have shown Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and Paul Gascoigne. The examples this video showed were mild at best

Late to the party with this, so apologies if it's been mentioned but a possible reason for why Kane's speech is a bit "slurred" is because he has a speech impediment.

I can tell you that within Scotland there is quite a variety as well. Even though the Scottish dialects has features in common, West coast and Highland Scottish is very melodic, Aberdonian extremely harsh, Glaswegian combines melodic with harsh in a bizarre way but , I have to admit, I'm not an expert either.
