American Bittern Calling in Magic Hour

A male American Bittern's booming call echoes throughout a wet meadow during the golden light of early evening. The exact mechanics to produce the call are not fully understood. In this video, a dominant male bittern performs its territorial call on top of a mound in response to another nearby bittern. Enjoy!

I tried to describe this sound to people but they thought I was crazy. Now I found out what makes that noise. I’ve heard this sound a thousand times back in the seventies but never got close to seeing what made it. I can tell you it’s very loud at night.

The American bittern is the quintessential marsh bird. It looks like the marsh, it acts like the marsh, and it even sounds like the marsh. It is so incredibly well "designed" (by evolution) to fulfill its niche. Amazing!

When I started working in wildlife areas, I heard this sound everywhere. At first I assumed it was the sound of water periodically moving through a drain but I noticed that it would come from all sorts of directions. I started putting it together when I noticed I only hear this sound when I know American Bitterns are in the area. They're fun birds. I like seeing them fly over in the morning and they're very funny on the wildlife cameras.

Hi, Bill. I just filmed an American Bittern two days ago--got sweet closeups of him--and I'll make a movie for my KZread channel. The film would be improved by having footage of him calling. Would you be interested in letting me use your clip? If you'll check my channel (tinyurl.com/ycoqvdw5), you'll see that I do good work, and I would, of course, credit you. With fingers crossed, Jo Alwood.
