To fully appreciate this, you have to have lived through those dark musical times. Disco, New Wave, Punk. These guys were a breath of fresh air.

Yes, rock in its purest form while others were doing "trends."

Dark times? That was the year of the Pretenders debut, London Calling, Joe Jackson's 1st 2 albums. Elvis Costello, Squeeze, XTC, the Jam, Police, Dire Straits, Bowie, Blondie, Talking Heads at the top of their game. Mainstream had Petty and Springsteen at their peak, Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, Roxy Music still making great music. AC/DC followed up Highway to Hell with Back in Black, Motorhead Ace of Spades and NRBQ Tiddly Winks came out. It was one of the greatest times for music. Rockpile was just another great band in 1980 while today they would the best band on the planet.

"Dark musical times"? Those were in the mid 70's. By 1980, the musical landscape was alive and healthy for the most part-so much variety and interesting ideas and sounds were abounding all over the place. Yes, a lot were obscure and not getting much airtime but you could find it with a little search. Having said that, the dark days would return by the late bloated 80's..

Rockpile was a very talented band, especially because of Nick Lowe & Dave Edmunds...two of the greats!

The Rocking Pile caravan once passed my house. They played me a song and I gave them some biscuits and gravy and one pair of clean socks. They were all very kind except for the tall one who for some reason was cruel.

Dick Clark really knew how to conduct an interview. He didn't condescend to those who weren't in the loop. He approached it as if everyone knew the subject matter. And if you didn't, he gave you a jumping-off point so you could do your own research. I always cared about the information I got from him. I learned a lot from him.

I presume his hit record he’s talking about is “Cruel to be Kind”

It's a shame that they'd break up in early 1981.

Uploader: Clark says 1981 in the interview, but you’ve written 1980.

canadianroot the episode was recorded in 1980, but not shown until 81. Dick Clark refers to “the illusion “ since this is pre-recorded. See 1:45.

Listen to the dialogue again. Dave knew it was 1980 at the time of recording, and was thrown off by the reference of 1981.
