4:00 The thing is that the states of the USA are not independent countries, they are just "regions". They have no importance on the international scene. If they were, we would learn about them in detail just like about every other independent country in other continents. We still learn about the USA states though, even if they are not countries, while we don't learn about the states of Mexico or Brazil, so the USA states are getting special attention. For every country, we had to be able to find them on map, know the capital and other major cities, important regions, know the geography (rivers, lakes, mountains...), what minerals are mined, animal production, plants grown, important industries, population, size of country, languages... that's what all of us learn for every country and have to know it from memory for regular exams. Of course, with so much information you forget most of it later in life, if you don't keep hearing or reading about it, but the basic knowledge about the world will stay with you. It's not your fault that american schools don't teach at least the minimum of world geography though, at least the names of all the countries. Now you know a little more about the european countries and that's cool, right? School is not the only place where we learn. 🙂

One word: funding. That’s why. Schools are not entirely supported by the federal government. They are funded by their own state and within each state it’s by school district. The more people are willing to pay taxes for education, the better the school. Sadly, there are many who don’t wish to pay for education because they either haven’t got children or their children are no longer in school, so why should they pay for something they don’t use 🤦🏻‍♀️ And, yes, I’ve actually heard those used as arguments, so not something I made up.

@@yeppp00 What I meant was, it's not an essential thing to know, when we should be learning more important things in school that we will use in our day to day lives like how to pay taxes, buy cars, set up bank accounts, apply for jobs, etc. Anyone who wants to be "educated" about where Morocco is, is completely within their rights to do so. It's just that after we graduate from school, we have bigger things to be worried about than geography. And it's not fair to call someone who doesn't know where every single country on the European map is, "ignorant." It's a nice thing to know, but not essential. And most people forget that kinda thing after a couple years cause they never use it unless they are in a job that involves geography (hence why it's not important to the vast majority). You can always learn that later in life when you maybe want to travel, but to be taught that in the school system seems like a waste of time, imo. In America, the school system is trash don't get me wrong, but we are also more concerned with other things we find more important; so it's not fair to call us "uneducated" because we don't learn the same way you do. I got formal education and went to school, so I am educated; just not on certain subjects, just like you probably aren't educated on certain subjects either. But that's not our fault, it's the school's fault. And most of us aren't concerned with maps on our free time cause we got the internet for that so...😂(it's just my opinion)

@@kamoko99 i get your point and i should have said this in my first comment; i don't mean that if you can't place each country on a map, you're automatically uneducated. it came out the wrong way and i'm sorry for that. i was just saying that putting all of the blame on education system is kind of stupid bc if you wanted to learn, you could. not saying you have to or that you're stupid if you don't do so. i just don't understand when ppl say that there's no way they could know these things bc they weren't taught that in school, when you could educate yourself. that was the point. but yes you're right, not knowing every country in every continent doesn't mean you can't be educated on something else. i'm really sorry if my comment offended you, it was not meant to do so. also sorry for my english

What's interesting to hear is that the names of the countries come up as only names and for American nothing comes with association with them. We learn a map at school but in a very forgettable way - location + a name. But as we grow and talk with other people we learn some characteristics of various countries, so even if I didn't know where Lithuania is, a clue for me would be knowing it's a Baltic country, for Kosovo we have a meme "Kosovo je Srbia", so I wouldn't think it's near Russia because Serbia is somewhere in the Balcans, I wouldn't look for Lichtenstein in the East because the name sounds Germanic and Germanic languages are being spoken in the west, Austria wouldn't be on the northern part because the names of both Austria and Australia indicate south ect. Looks like in the US nobody really talks about Europe in casual conversations and I never thought about that, that's an interesting insight I got. And as a Pole I got a bit sad that Poland got association with East while we're in Central Europe right above Czechs and Slovacs :< I have no idea where that association comes from since culturally we have much more in common with the West

Then I came through and learned a lot about geography on my own, without any school. Not saying that as a praise to myself, of course, I’m just saying that schools is one of many tools available for knowledge, and if you don’t know something valid and you recognize it as an issue yet do nothing about it, the issue is not in schools

Speaking for Germany (we have a kinda different school system) in Highschool (grade 11-12/13) we get to chose the 5 courses we will have exams in and if you have English you have a whole semester about the United States and to get a good grade we had to memorise where the states are and what their capital is. I think I could still name about 75% maybe more. The first time we had to name the states our teacher didn't grade the test I got about 60% right and after learning about the states I got 100% correct. However I'm not sure if everybody could do it.
