    A British comedian on returning to the UK after some time in the States loved that he overheard on the bus a conversation overheard: 'How was your day?' - 'Crap, mate!' that made him feel at home after endless 'Have a great day now!' and the obligation to have a 'great day' every day! We have a right here to have a lousy day!

    Exactly..I don't have Great days or Good days at best they're average days..uneventful is as good as it gets..too many health problems..used to be financial difficulty..now I'm old and often ill..if not one ailment it's another..or several at once..People can't stop themselves from saying How Are You etc..SURVIVING..you won't get a better response from me

    Oh yeah!... 😋 Sounds good to me guys... In the early hours of this morning... I was watching the competitive eater Joel Hansen... He was trying an "All you can eat Fish & Chips" offer at a restaurant... At one point the kitchen staff wanted to cut him off... (Deny him anymore food)... Luckily after asking to speak to the boss... Everything was "sorted"... And Joel was allowed to continue ordering... But the Fish looked absolutely amazing... I was genuinely salivating watching him eating all of that lovely looking Battered Fish... I'll drop a link to the video here guys... Enjoy. 👍 ---------------> kzread.info/dash/bejne/fImXmMGxZpS3mtY.htmlsi=Hzi2aMZ1YGvQWfYT

    I let a lady go in front of me at the supermarket checkout a year or so ago, she only had a few things. When she went to pay, her card wouldn't work so she looked through her purse for cash and didn't have enough. I said to the cashier "just put her items through with mine" it was about five pounds worth. The lady asked for my address to bring the money around to me. I just said " next time, you can pay for mine" I wait outside that shop every week.....

    Regards the Mot. I couldn’t believe it when a friend of mine from the states told me it’s just a visual safety check. How crazy is that, I hate to think how many death traps are on the road over there. These people who protest about the Mot might think differently if god forbid somebody in there family was killed due to defective brakes or steering etc. Thanks for your lovely remarks, your well sorted Jess. 😊England will always welcome you and your family back hear with welcome arms. p/s did you have to pass your driving test over hear ?

The amount of times i saw a car drive past with no front bumper (fender) or one of the front wings was missing and you was looking at exposed wheel arch. I had to ask the missus if that was normal, she just smiled and said yeah it's fairly common...

So although EH has some houses, like Wrest Park and Audley End, it has most of the castles and ancient monuments. Visitors to the UK should check the short term memberships to these organisations. US visitors can use the Royal Oak Foundation as a tax efficient way of getting National Trust access..

    Jess the MOT is compulsory on all vehicles over 3 years old. It is done every year and checks many things including the cars exhaust emissions

  • @JacknVictor

    @JacknVictor

    3 ай бұрын

    Not on cars classed as classic cars, there's now no obligation to test them because as a rule people that own cars of that age keep them in tip top condition and would be expected to be in a reasonably mint above average condition and fully working, and so the government gives them special dispensation in regards to MOT testing. You are still entitled to one, but I'm not sure how it works if the car then fails. As to whether you cannot use it until the problem is fixed or if you can just carry on as driving it as normal (obviously if you love your car you would fix it). I do know a few people with classic cars and instead of having an MOT, they just book it in for a pre-test at a garage once a year, where they will give it a once over and tell you if there is anything that needs immediate attention that would fail a MOT test, or give you an advisory like you get on a MOT. That way, you get to know what needs fixing without failing the MOT itself.

    Some great observations there Jess which I go along with 100%. I agree with the annual MOT inspection though I think in recent years some of the checks are a little over the top. My BMW M3 failed its MOT in February due to an engine warning light which was indicating a series of faults including an issue with the battery and exhaust emissions both of which turned out to be BS due to a faulty sensor. Apparently since 2018, if an engine fault warning light comes on it is an automatic MOT failure even when it comes on in error. Wasn't an expensive fix but frustrating all the same.

    Two things I think we should celebrate more in the UK are: -The Proms. Not necessarily the last night, although that is the most famous part, it's the spirit and accessibility of the whole festival I think is important. It's a series of classical music concerts that runs the whole gamut of the genre and there are incredibly cheap tickets for people to walk up and buy on the day (and even the booked seats tend to be pretty good value from what I remember). Each year, the program is incredibly varied from new and experimental piece to old favourites, but what may be most appreciable to you is that there are family proms each year that have the intention of giving people new to the genre a taste of what it can be. Last year, to mark the 50th Anniversary of the death of Tolkien, they had a fantasy music prom which including pieces from hit movies and TV shows as well as some famous bits of classical music. Previous years have featured a computer game prom, and Ibiza prom (which can be seen in its entirety on KZread). This was always the intention of them, to let people experience something that they may think of as elitist and maybe discover something that they end up loving. The Royal Institution Christmas Lectures. It's a trio of lectures about a scientific topic that is aimed at children from about 8 right up to 16/17 done each year at Christmas, and they can be seen on TV. Similar to the proms, the idea is to inspire particularly young people about the possibilities of science. If you get the chance, last years lectures with Sue Black that were about forensic pathology were fascinating and I think they can be seen on KZread. This is maybe something that is included in your love of British TV (along with the absence of drug adverts maybe...), but I always love to mention it

    Morning Jess there are many reasons why people don’t get to see and embrace what the U.K has to offer, no car, no money, disability, too lazy ( that’s me )so I find your trips inspiring and educational. You should get a petrol allowance from the U.K tourist board as I’m sure all the places Chris & yourself visit will inspire others to come. Your videos are pure travel not like some of your fellow countrymen/women who stay in London the whole time and seem to try and eat their own weight each day at the food markets,then say they’ve holidayed in England. Or worse still those who have never been here and in all probability never will and do reaction videos to everything, as you are aware to react to something you have to experience it first, I’m sure there are many things you’ve all experienced since being here that are completely different to what you thought, good & not so good I won’t say bad. As much as you are looking forward to returning home, I think Chris & yourself will leave a little of your hearts here when you do. But while your still here, enjoy and safe travelling.👍

    My UK mechanic also has an MOT testing station in his garage. So when they do the MOT I also get them to do a full service. So if any works needs doing to comply with the mot everything is done and dusted in 1 day. In southern and northern ireland you have to go to a stand alone mot testing centre and its so annoying.

No substitute for regular maintenance and carful driving. Your adventures demonstrate good driving skills well done. Your family really has absolutely made the most of your time here although if you have the time head north maybe cross the border into Scotland. They are not an evil, I'm a plus 50 very mechanically minded person that generally fixes most stuff on my (and my families) car(s) myself, and I see the MOT as a more in depth check on my car than one I could easily do at home and am happy to be told that my nearly 2 ton 100MPH weapon that I drive about in might not be safe for me or others. Granted, there are some MOT test stations that see the MOT as a money making part of their business so they can get the job to fix stuff and rip people off, but, that's not a problem with the MOT, that's a problem with that garage!

  • @rayfielding

    @rayfielding

    @@ChuckFickens1972 yes I don’t disagree. Necessary evil really means they must be done. It’s an important inspection ensuring a vehicle is safe. It can cause anxiety for owners but who wants to drive an unsafe car on the road. Your points are valid! The other aspect is an MOT is no panacea or substitute for regular checks. Sadly I was first on the spot when a car hit and killed a child. So yes the MOT is important.

    I'm English, but have travelled the world, and lived and worked in several countries. Here's a few from me:- THE BRITISH STANDARD ELECTRIC PLUG. It is so much safer than any other form of power connection, but don't leave it laying on the floor, it really hurts when you step on it. FRESH COWS MILK. Many eastern countries don't have access to, or use Fresh Cows milk for Tea or Coffee or Cereals. They tend to use Condensed Milk, which spoils ALL of the above. THE KETTLE. What better way is there to boil water for your drink? PROPER REAL ALE. Not available in in most other countries. Most countries serve just an array of Lager. DRIVING ON THE CORRECT SIDE OF THE ROAD. Not the Right side. THE 50/50 PAVEMENT/ SIDEWALK RULE. This unwritten rule states that, when walking along a pavement and someone is walking in the opposite direction, each party must adjust their path to avoid collision with the other party. Too many ignorant people out there. ROUNDABOUTS. Four way intersections just don't work, you don't know what the other 3 are going to do. ENGLISH VOWELS. The English Vowels are A, E, I, O, U, not AIR, Eeee, AYE, OAR, YOU. Just me being a little bit pedantic, LOL. I could think of a lot more, but this is getting too long.😁

    If you can, visit Boston. There'll you'll be able to visit the Stump - St. Botolph's Church, which is one of the largest churches in England. You can also visit the Guildhall, where some of the Pilgrim Fathers were imprisoned. Also, there is the Maud Foster Windmill. There's also Skegness and Cleethorpes - which are seaside towns. There is also Lincoln Cathedral to visit. As a Bostonian, I would say that it's best to stay at The White Hart hotel and use Boston as your base.

There are too many bookies, charity shops and Eastern European shops. I would never go back to live there.

    Mandatory safety and emission inspections are fairly common globally and, as you say, even a fair few US states have them. I guess some people feel responsible owners should need one but not all owners are. This said, most accidents, even in the US where most states don’t inspect, are due to driver error, with vehicle malfunctions a fair bit lower, but even if inspections save one life it seems worth it for me. Plus it keeps emissions lower. It’s also true that roads in say the UK are generally filled with more hazards such as pedestrians and cyclists so it protects other road users too

Seen many many American garages or "shops " looking at cars that are basically held together with rust and refuse to get work done on it ?!?!? It blows my mind . Also when you buy a second hand car you can do a MOT check and see what's needs doing to it in the future. Bit more peace of mind.

There is also of course servicing which you have everywhere including the UK, and that is something that is offered.

Or morning/afternoon/evening! Hiya would be more suited to when I meet up with close friends… there’s also a lot of different ways to use a word like hiya (which sounds odd) but if you say the word fast it’s less friendly than emphasising the length of time since meeting the person within the word hiya (almost said in a surprised, excited or overly happy way (almost like saying oh my god where have you been) Hope that makes sense 😂… not saying you’re doing it wrong, just from my own experience I find it to be less common from a stranger in the street. 'Sorted' has an interesting history. When I was a kid 60+ years ago, if you had a problem, you found someone to sort it out. The expression would be 'sorted out'. And it was like that right up to the late 80s and rave culture when it was used to mean 'I have enough disco biscuits for tonight' - but the word out was not used, so became 'sorted' - and now it has become much more general to mean everything is fine.

    Yeah Yorkshire tea is a good one I love it, we always have that in the cupboard. The only one I prefer to that is Twining Assam, its not a blend like most teas just pure from the Assam region in India.

    Jess I did laugh at your comments on the MOT - could anything describe the difference between the male and female brain more clearly than the feelings around the MOT from you and Chris? I'm firmly in your camp BTW - MOTs may not guarantee your car is in tip top condition but at least they check the safety features such as brakes, steering, etc. You're definitely becoming an honorary Brit!

    Thanks for the list - In the UAE in addition to an annual vehicles check conducted by the police; a vehicle has to be inspected and pass a harder test before it can be sold. Everything costs money. Keeping historic properties going and open to the public is very expensive - many of us become subscription members of the National Trust, various Heritage trusts and even more importantly wildlife (including bird) trusts, preserves/zoos and protection bodies. Many in the US seem to demean good language (English) - so please put back the “U’ and stop swapping “s” with “z”

    The historical context for driving on the left is to prevent highway robberies back in the horse and carriage days.. I guess would be muggers would need to enter oncoming traffic to acost driver. Also where the phrase Riding Shotgun comes from as the front passanger would be armed with a shot gun.

    To add that an MOT CHECK is done to every vehicle 3 years and older. It's a road worthiness exam and costs approx £55 for a car..If it passes you receive a certificate valid for 12 months and is required to tax and insure the vehicle. It's still the driver's responsibility to ensure it remains roadworthy despite the exam/test.

    Another note: £55 is the maximum that they can charge for an MOT on a car by law, so if a garage charges u more than that, they are breaking the law.

    The church has gone by the wayside, for many. So, the pub - which has always been near to a church or two, for obvious reasons - is one of the last bastions of 'community'. I know that if I want to watch a football match, I will be welcomed into a certain pub. I will spot someone who knows me from school, or from the street I lived in as a child. One of my relatives will be there, or someone will make room for me and engage me in conversation. If I want to meet up with friends, I don' t have to tidy the house; make a bite to eat and provide drinks. We just meet up for a couple of 'cheeky drinks', once the kids are in bed. We can go to another pub, 'popping in for a swift one', with the dogs - who get free treats and a fresh water bowl - after a walk along the coast. In short, pubs are marvellous! They are, to my mind, the pinnacle of civilisation.
