    The "Gamecocks" nickname comes from a Revolutionary War hero and former South Carolina Senator named Thomas Sumter. A lot of college team nicknames are more historical than they seem at face value.

    Tennessee's nickname is "The Volunteer State" after two events, one during the War of 1812 in New Orleans (500 miles from TN), and one during the Mexican-American War (over a thousand miles from their homes), in which volunteers from Tennessee were pivotal in battles.

    Being at a (large) college football game is a completely different experience than an NFL game. College stadiums are loud, full of chants, marching bands, and traditions that go back decades, some more than a century. NFL games have a sterile, corporate feel to them. Sure, there are fans who cheer and they can get loud from time to time, but the atmosphere is nothing at all like a game in the Big House, the Horseshoe, Tennessee, or at Penn State. The rivalries are exponentially bigger, as well.

    Tennessee is known as the Volunteer state for its residents' eagerness to serve in times of war. More people have volunteered to serve from Tennessee than any other state, even much larger ones. As a result the University of Tennessee is known as the Volunteers. In college football, many of the teams bearing their state's name will be known by the State's nickname. The Oklahoma Sooners are from the Sooner State. The Indiana Hoosiers are from the Hoosier State. The Oregon State Beavers are from the Beaver State. The university of North Carolina Tarheels are from the Tarheel state. And so on. Each of these nicknames has a rich history that is a sense of pride for the residents. Some are based on Anglisized versions of foreing words or phrases. So as odd as some of the names may be, the fans wear them with pride. Example, Hoosiers used to be known to say "Who's Here?" when someone would knock on their door, instead of "Who's there?" It's quirky history. But it was unique to Indiana. Because there are dozens of colleges in nearly every state, but only 32 current professional teams in only the largest cities, many fans have had traditional loyalties to their nearest college teams for generations. College football also started decades before professional football, so it is a uniquely American thing that we support college teams with such enthusiasm. For many people seeing the stars of their college teams was the closest they would ever get to seeing a professional level game in person. The 15 largest stadiums in the US are all colllege stadiums. And they are filled to near capacity every Saturday from September to December. 1 Michigan Stadium 107,601 Ann Arbor, Michigan 1927 University of Michigan Wolverines 2 Beaver Stadium 106,572 University Pk, Pennsylvania 1960 Penn State University Nittany Lions 3 Ohio Stadium 102,780 Columbus, Ohio 1922 Ohio State University Buckeyes 4 Kyle Field 102,733 College Station, Texas 1927 Texas A&M University Aggies 5 Neyland Stadium 102,455 Knoxville, Tennessee 1921 University of Tennessee Volunteers 6 Tiger Stadium 102,321 Baton Rouge, Louisiana 1924 Louisiana State Univerity Tigers 7 Darrell K Royal Stadium 100,119 Austin, Texas 1924 Universit of Texas Longhorns 8 Bryant-Denny Stadium 100,077 Tuscaloosa, Alabama 1929 University of Alabama Crimson Tide 9 Sanford Stadium 92,746 Athens, Georgia 1929 University of Georgia Bulldogs 10 Cotton Bowl 92,100 Dallas, Texas 1930 Shared stadium for rivalry and bowl games 11 Rose Bowl 90,888 Pasadena, California 1922 University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Bruins, Rose Bowl Game 12 Ben Hill Griffin Stadium 88,548 Gainesville, Florida 1930 University of Florida Gators 13 Jordan-Hare Stadium 87,451 Auburn, Alabama 1939 Auburn University Tigers 14 Gaylord Memorial Stadium 86,112 Norman, Oklahoma 1925 University of Oklahoma Sooners 15 Memorial Stadium 86,047 Lincoln, Nebraska 1923 Nebraska Cornhuskers

    God bless Tennessee….The …humble ….State of TEXAS…..owes a huge debt of gratitude to Tennesseans who volunteered at the Alamo , shed their blood and gave their lives for independent Texas. Sam Houston,the First President of the Sovereign Republic of Texas was from Tennessee as was the legendary Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie who along with 32 other Tennesseans died at the Alamo. Tennessee also sent men to fight with General Andrew Jackson against the British in the epic battle of New Orleans. Texas and Tennessee are brothers,fiercely independent and blessed with a strong sense of self preservation and liberty.

    @17:06 there is no piped-in music. This singing is from the heart with only the band playing. It is the greatest fight song on the planet. Also Seven Nation Army was recorded by White Stripes (Jack White) who are huge Michigan fans. Jack once said he wished no other school other than Michigan would sing his song. This game was played 10SEP2011, I was there and it was loud. Another song you did not react to from Michigan is Mr Brightside which is sung in the 4th quarter. Brandon Flowers of the Killers said Michigan is his favorite team because of Mr BrightSide.

  • @baraxor
    @baraxor Жыл бұрын

    Very often, the team of the University of a particular state will adopt the nickname of the state for its name. So, Michigan is the "Wolverine State", and the teams of the University of Michigan are the Wolverines, the "Beaver State" of Wisconsin has the University of Wisconsin Badgers, the "Sooner State" of Oklahoma has the University of Oklahoma Sooners, the "Mountain State" of West Virginia has the University of West Virginia Mountaineers, the "Volunteer State" of Tennessee has the University of Tennessee Volunteers, etc. In the 19th century, the University of a U.S. state was the institution providing education and degrees in the higher arts: medicine, law, science and so forth. The State University provided instruction for future schoolteachers and businessmen. Most U.S. states have both a University of XYZ and an XYZ State University. In addition to these state-administered institutions, there are a lot of private universities, many of them as prestigious as the state ones.

    I appreciate that you're not overreacting. Make no mistake, college football is almost without question the best experience in sports, but some of the clips with empty stadiums are just bunk. And some are only cool, or extra cool, if someone takes five minutes to explain the history of the school/state. It's different to hear "Country Roads" or "Rocky Top" when you're actually in West Virginia or Tennessee (just examples). Everyone knows what a cock/gamecock is, and they own it and flaunt it. Yeah, Wisconsin is random; don't ever pass up the opportunity to go there. Only place I've ever heard polka rap, and even that was somehow fun.

    I was laughing at your comments, and even forgave your lack of knowledge about names (Tennessee Volunteers) but I rolled my eyes at your comment regarding gamecock. It can have the same slang meaning for the male sex organ here, but even in your county it was a term for male bird long before it had the other meaning. I've been to football games in my country and yours (I lived in England in 1999). You really should come to a game here. It's a much bigger, all-day, event in the US, particularly for college/university games. It's true--many amateur college teams draw more people, inspire more passion, than any of your professional teams do. Not an insult, just an invitation to come experience it for yourself.

    For High School Football & College Football bands are normal. Those football games are mostly College Football. The one with the Kansas City Chiefs was an NFL game. The most popular College Football teams regularly get better attendance than most NFL teams. D1-FBS College Football games are more meaningful to the team's success. If you want a National Championship 10 wins & 2 losses isn't going to get you into the 4 team playoff. It'll get you a bowl game, and likely a shot at your Conference Championship, but that's it. An NFL team can get to the playoffs with a losing record, if the other teams in their division are worse.

While it doesn't seem like that big of an issue, tens of millions of US taxpayer dollars are spent by our military to do it. And that's across all the major sports. As for the 17,000 attendance, that's just under the league average in the MLS of 21,000. All-time average in a season is just over 22,000. Atlanta United has the highest average at about 47,000.

    TBH, Americans aren't organic enough to come up with clever chants like they do in European leagues like Premier League. College football fanbases have old traditions and songs that are decades/generations old. However, don't expect them to come up with a chant or song for a particular situation or event for bantz. I attended and graduated from one of the unis highlighted in the video (University of Oklahoma) and have been to several college football games as well as several Prem. games at White Hart Lane, Wembley, and THFC stadium. I would say college football fans are much better than NFL and more akin to supporters in the PL in terms of support.
