The photographer wasn't a joke. He had a vitally important job. He had to take pictures of every bit of intellegence material they would find, in case they couldn't save the sub and had to abandon it. And he had to do it quickly. I don't know if y'all have ever seen or used "old brownie" box cameras, but they weren't as handy to use as cell phone cameras or even current digital cameras.

I own a few antique cameras... not quite this old. First gen polaroids, 1970s? I had a polaroid and a kodak or 2 as a child... But this did not exist back then. Still photography is going extinct. There are a few older cameras in my basement, owned by my grandparents, in disrepair... I doubt worth anything.

So the U-boat capture you referred to at the beginning of the video was a real event, HMS Bulldog capturing U-110, a working Enigma and (more importantly) the codebooks for it. This story is for the capture of U-505, which the capture of the Enigma machine itself was more noteworthy due to the configuration changes made by the German Navy for their Enigma machines. After the capture of U-110, the German Navy (and only their Navy) managed to modify their Enigma machines to incorporate a fourth cypher wheel. This made internal Naval communications unbreakable by the Ultra group, as a fourth wheel added a complexity that "Christopher" was not designed to break. The damning thing for them with the loss of 505, is they didn't bother changing the codes, not knowing that the new machine and the current codebooks were in the hands of the US. So we just sat back and broke all the German Navy messages, while Ultra was breaking everything put out by GHC, Gestapo, the Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe. And anything coming from them and going to their Navy.

Captain(later Admiral) Dan Gallery was a bold SOB. He was very good at his job and was an excelkent commander and leader of men. He would think out of the box when it came to deal with a problem. The capture of the 505 with its ENIGMA machine almost got him in trouble with Naval Intellegence and his superiors. Thats one reason they kept it secret that it was captured. Its not a surprise the German crew didn't try harder to save her the last time. The U-505 was considered cursed by the crew. Throught its career it had been heavily damaged in combat, and faced many mechanical issues. One of the boat's commanders even shot himself due to not being able to take being depth charged anymore. He snapped and blew his brains out in the Conning area.

Sorry Nate but the Enigma was broken by Poland in the 30's. Then the Germans added another sypher wheel (as a part of normal development of the machine) and Poland lost some of it's ability to decode it (we needed more code breaking machines and personel - spoiler not enough cash in the budget) so we informed our allies France and Britain in order to get funds in exchange for this intel and designs on how to deode the Enigma. Alan Turing was only able to decode the later models of the Enigma (4 and 5 sypher wheel versions), because he got the whole step by step instructions from Poland. Credit where it's due he was a brilliant guy and he created advancements i computers to decode the Enigma even faster - but only thanks to earlier Polish efforts. Like how the Wright bros created the first plane and later others built even better ones, but only after they proved it could be done.

I like to think that the Bermuda Triangle saw how the Americans outsmarted a bunch of Nazis, took their U-Boat, and how hard they were working to get it back to port, so it just figured that it would let the tiny little humans have their small little victory and not ruin it.

My grandfather was of gremantic bloodlines and he served in supply depots in the US Army the family was here before there was a Germany, united under Bismark about 20 years before the first world war. Prior to that it was Prussia and several city states including the largest besides Prussia and Austria being Germania that never was a major player until after Prussia took them over.

I know you probably cant do a reaction vid to their stuff because of how youtube and CC/DMCA is with music, but if you have not listened to Sabaton, you really should. They are a Swedish power metal band, but they do quite often sing in English. Their whole thing is all the music they make is a story/event from history, whether is a huge event like D-day or something small and not as well known like 40-1 about Polish soldiers who held their line against the germans at 40 - 1. They are an amazing band I bet at least Nate would like them with his interest in history.

You got various minor things wrong, yes the Brit’s got an enigma. But the Germans knew. Changed the codes, we dod it after them, and they didn’t know, so we had active codes, no one else did. Or ever had that. Except us. And an enigma with inactive codes was next to useless. As they found out; as you can’t decrypt it: when they change the code: where as we could and did.

Actually NO, you are crossing up 2 different stories, in August of 1941, the British did attack and capture U-570 with it's INTACT 1st generation enigma machine, this is true, HOWEVER, the German crew DID in fact destroy all of the sensitive books with all the Enigma codes that was needed to decypher any messages sent to the sub from Germany, and since the British wanted to crow and pat themselves on the back publically about capturing the Sub, the German High command changed all of the Enigma codes anyway, and started developing a new Enigma machine, after the British repaired the former German Submarine, they commissioned it into the Royal Navy ans the HMS Graph, but in 1944, the U.S. Navy would sucessfully cature the U-505 with it's CURRENT generation and all its cyphers, codebooks all intact, and they kept it secret for the duration of the war.
