America's West Coast by Train | Amtrak Pacific Surfliner | Business Class | San Diego - Los Angeles

In this travelmentary or trip report I review Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner in the single-level version on my trip from San Diego (Santa Fe Depot) to Los Angeles (Union Station). I booked a business class ticket and filmed my travel experience in California. Business Class can be seen as First Class - it‘s the highest booking class on this train.
Music: Life As Is - DJ DENZ The Rooster from epidemicsound
The rest are my own compositions made using Apple Logic Pro X and Garage Band on iOS

Took this line in October 2019. Between Oceanside and Los Angeles. Had the pleasure of being in the double decker Surfliner cars, in business class. The trip down to Oceanside, we were served our snack boxes (same items as you got) and drinks at our seats (BTW, they offer wine in the afternoon and evening times). Trip back to L.A., was a morning trip and it was serve yourself (no snack boxes in the mornings). Loved that train and I could watch the waves crash ashore all day long. Fantastic report.

Good trip report there! Seems like a beautiful train journey as one can really enjoy those seaside views. Also interesting to see San Juan Capistrano from a train ride view as I have often viewed the railfan webcam that looks down on the station.

Prior to the pandemic I knew Amtrak operated one Pacific Surfliner service using single-level Amfleet/Horizon coaches rather than the typical bi-level Surfliner/Superliner coaches. I've been looking for a video featuring this service for quite a bit, but was unable to find one until now. It's a good idea to mention it in the description so it's easier for others to find.

2 hrs 51 mins is actually pretty competitive between LA and San Diego considering that traffic on the I-5 can easily make the driving time over 4 hours and LAX is located far off from DTLA if you're flying. They are currently making increment improvements along the Surfliner route right now with the goal of reducing travel time to under 2 hrs 30 mins.

Hi, thanks for watching and your insightful comment. You mention some super-important aspects here that I didn't address in the video. If you choose the car, then you can absolutely run into the problems that you describe. If you fly, then driving from the airport to your destination may change the whole calculation (it's the same with my other video about the Acela train). Also an interesting piece of information you gave about the future reduction of travel time. Overall, one has to factor in many aspects when deciding which travel option to choose. Once again thank you very much for watching and sharing your view! Christian from travelmentary TV

Hi everybody, thanks for watching. One thing I have to mention: I have started to use epidemicsound to add some music, which gives me a lot of flexibility and saves time. But I will continue to use my own compositions, too. The song I used from epidemicsound is called "Life As Is" by DJ DENZ The Rooster. Once again thanks for watching and it would be super cool if you'd subscribe to this channel. I'm looking forward to releasing many more videos :). Christian from travelmentary TV

I once rode the Surfliner in business for a quick hop from Anaheim to Los Angeles, I only got the snackbox. Most of my experience on Amtrak has been on the NEC line. I presume that, as is the case there, being business gets you free soda or whatever from the cafe?

Amtrak’s businesses class in the Midwest use the seats you showed at 5:53 and are superior to the East and west coast businesses class. They are in a 1-2 configuration, have a crazy amount of legroom and recline, and include a leg rest and a foot rest. The business class car you saw labeled “Polar Express” was really just a coach class car that was from Amtrak’s Christmas train and is no different to the regular coach cars.

travelmentary TV I would have to recommend the Lincoln Service (Chicago, Illinois to St. Louis, Missouri ), the Wolverine Service (Chicago to Pontiac, Michigan), or the Blue Water (Chicago to Port Huron, Michigan). On these route the trains operate at 110 mph. Also, Amtrak’s Metropolitan Lounge in Chicago Union Station is probably the best Amtrak lounge in the country, it even has showers.

Hi, Santa Ana is visible at 10:44, not very long though. When editing a video there are many considerations to make, sometimes the footage is not good enough, sometimes my gear doesn’t work, sometimes I have to make a phone call, sometimes there are unexpected noises and sometimes I fall asleep ;). I hope you could still enjoy the video to some degree. Thanks for watching.

After European or UK train travel it's embarasssing to see our sad Amtrak system in the states. For the most part I would strongly urge Europeans to avoid using our "train" system for significant intercity travel. Some cities and regions such as my home of San Francisco and other large compact cities have adequate public transit systems, but L.A. certainly isn't one of them. That said I can recommend taking Amtrak to a place like Yosemite National Park. There is a bus that will take you from a train station in the Central Valley (Merced) into the famous valley. An especially good choice if you wish to remain car free on a visit to San Francisco or Los Angeles.

There’s always one consist of single level cars on use for this route. My grandfather who took the train every weekday (when he had his job in LA), only once had to ride on this consist. He says the bi-level cars are better, and I agree.
