America’s Secret Island Where Money Doesn’t Exist

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, what you’re about to see is one of Hawaii’s most stunning islands. It’s called Niihau, it sits about 17.5 miles southwest of Kauaʻi across the Kaulakahi Channeland, and besides its beauty, this place also holds a reputation for being one of the most exclusive and forbidden islands on the planet.
Today, we’ve been given a gift: we’ve been granted exclusive access to wander around this usually roped-off slice of nature, and see first-hand what life on the forbidden island is really like - that’s right, people live here.
Where does that moniker come from? During a polio epidemic in the Hawaiian Islands in 1952, Niihau became known as the “Forbidden Island” because they closed off access to the general public. And ever since, that name’s just stuck. The name hasn’t changed, nor has the technology, with the residents utilizing traditional hunting techniques for food.
The island’s rolling hills extend more than five miles, with all of the land being privately owned for more than 150 years. As you’ll see when we begin our tour, everything on this island goes slow; the people, the animals; the way of life - all because its owners are simply following the strange wishes of a long-gone king.
Before we explore, I warm you: your money’s no good here, so put it away.

These comments are why the island stays closed to outside visitors, it saddens me to see how utterly thoughtless some can me. This is also why the rest of our islands are being overrun and destroyed the lack of preservation in a whole. I love Hawai'i as a local girl I wish Oahu would practice at least a fraction of the ways used on this island maybe then we would reestablish sustainability.

Robinson claims most of the west side of Kaua`i and prevents Native Hawaiian(s) from accessing their ancestral lands so they can perform cultural practices. As a Kauakahi, there are heiau that can only be accessed by cane roads, blocked. As a Kapu descendant, there is no way for my ohana to protect or take care of heiau Kuikahi. How can Robinson claim Ko`ula on Kaua`i?? Kamehameha V has descendants on Kaua`i due to his daughter with Abigail Maheha, Keanolani and her daughter Hyacinth.

sorry but no, this is us hawaiian’s land that americans illegally took over. this is the last island that MAINLY belongs to pure HAWAIIANS

@@trazyq No. A king of Hawaii sold Niihau for $10,000 to a white woman in 1864. She and her family have owned it since then. 1864 to 2021 equals about 157 years now. The sale of Niihau was legal, and the woman was not an American. These facts are long established and widely known.
