Fantastic film and History lesson! Long Live The Hill of St. Louis! ❤❤❤
Fantastic. When I moved to St Louis in 2011 I had a chance to rent an upstairs flat just down the street from St Ambrose. I now regret not signing the lease. I am not Italian but was attracted to the community this neighborhood offered. If we had more neighborhoods in St Louis that were like the Hill we would not have half the problems we have today. Thank you so much for this presentation.
This was a great documentary. Now one for Dogtown! 😊
I love this city
Interesting. Greetings from an old Italian. 🇮🇹
Ive never heard of the hill. As a black girl from coastal Georgia all I ever heard about was Little Italy, New York. Also the Italian community in Chicago. I’m going to have to spread the word and take a trip one day! Thank you for the beautiful history lesson and God bless the USA ❤

Welcome!
My nephew just brought back a bride from Milan who was born in Sardinia. They settled in a house on The Hill off of Southwest. My wife is northern Italian and The Hill is like a magnet pulling them home in the St Louis area. We’re spoiled here in STL
I love the Hill and the people of the Hill. My grandfather would take me there to help repair tables and chairs in most the restaurants back in the 60-70's . Great memories!
I've lived here all my life and have never heard half of these stories. Thanks for this!
We drive to Missouri Baking Company every time we go through St. Louis. The gooey butter cake can't be beat!
That was awesome!
As far back as I remember the hill was and is where you go to have an authentic Italian restaurant experience in a neighborhood that might know how that place should be ❤
Lived near St. Louis my whole life. Loved this documentary. Took my first date to Zia’s. Used to get Gioia’s for lunch too. Love The Hill. I hope it thrives for generations to come. Great video
Baseball great and comedic prophet Yogi Berra was from the Hill. So was his boyhood pal and fellow MLB player Joe Garagiola.
I grew up right off the hill from the 70's to 90's .Went to shaw school grew up on poor boys, first boyfriend lived on Columbia so miss the hill so many great memories!
I worked near the hill in a metal stamping plant in the 70’s. It was the day of business lunches and dinners so of course we frequented the hill a lot. My favorite meal was sole piccata. Delicious.
saw a guy feed his dog a beer at a sunday soccer league here as a kid. its like a little slice of rome.
I was born on the Hill! My maiden name is Barrale ❤ 🇮🇹
Amazing content...thank you very much. Piuma from Northern Italy...to California in the 1800's..now in Colorado, USA. I hope you and your family are doing well.
Ate at rigazzis a few years ago. Excellent food
St. Louis is a gem and the world will know soon enough!
"Guess the mob still controls the streets there because it's peaceful and quiet." I am quoting a comment below because it represents the depth of ignorance out there amongst NON Italians. People really do believe that Italian culture = the mob and/or violence. Here's a novel concept: Maybe the Hill is a safe area because the people are law-abiding citizens? It's unreal that anyone who watched this documentary and saw the sacrifices which Italian Americans have made, both immigrants and later military heroes, could then mock them.
So many of the stories of the 20's and 30's sounds just like the stories I was told about my Italian family from the coal mining region of eastern Ohio. Especially the one about the stills in the basement. My Great Grandfather made wine by the barrel in his basement until a neighbor ratted on him. The feds came in and took an axe to the works. Family is everything in the Italian community.
Yogi belongs to Montclair, New Jersey. He may have been born there but he made his home here in New Jersey. I don’t live in a mansion. It is just a big house with large rooms. No one goes to that restaurant anymore it is too crowded. Giving directions to his house: When you come to the fork in the road take it. And the famous “It Ain’t Over Until It’s Over”. NJ Loves Yogi too.
A Sicilian girl, living in a lonely world, she took the midnight train going anywhere. Just a Lombard boy, born and raised right on The Hill, he took the midnight train going anywhere
I knew some very nice folks from The Hill🇮🇹 named Giordano. My grandfather met his Italian buddy shortly after he became an officer in Local #562, which was the local that absorbed Cape Girardeau Steamfitters Local 318, which my grandfather was vice-president of, til a work boom caused them to be absorbed after WWII, & the Giordanos were extraordinarily kind-hearted folks! Antonio aka 'Anthony' was a beautiful fella! Just beautiful.... God rest em both, my grandfather John Rider & his buddy Tony Giordano.... Both of them were princes of amongst men...👌🏼💯
it is true, little Italy in NY has shrunk over the years. Chinatown has taken over most of the area. Many of the "Italian" restaurants there are not even owned by Italians anymore. There are some good ones but they are harder to find now.

Try Bensonhurst in Brooklyn. Or Carroll Gardens.

@@Architect-jg8cnTaylor Street in Chicago was largely broken up by the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago. There are a few Italian restaurants left there but not too many.
best Italian food i ever had was in the Hill ! Im proud to be from St Louis we have some of the most unique communities
If you want to see what St Louis looked like years ago go there and visit from the store that you might remember from when you were young It's like you have steap back into time Go there and have lunch There in no such thing as fast food here. Might be a little bit of a wait but it's worth the wait So my friends I say Bon'appite
I contend Boston’s North End is the best little Italy. It is separated from the other neighborhoods in Boston by major tunnels and multi lane thoroughfares. It remains a majority Italian neighborhood of brownstones and apartment buildings 100s of years old. There more than 100 Italian businesses an restaurants in the North End.

Have yall ever heard of Federal Hill in Providence Rhode Island.
The best cannoli's in the states are at the Hill, Missouri Bakery.
I mean absolutely ZERO DISRESPECT w/this next question, as my mother's maiden name is 'Dillinger,' so I understand different folks' different sensibilities... But was The Giordano Crime Family ever known to frequent The Hill🇮🇹??? Thanx in advance for any replies! Great work, too!👍🏽
I lived there when Pope John Paul II came. On Daggett Street.
Amighetti’s forever!!!
Sugar Vince Filippello was a gangster in the local mob

Oh yeah?! Was he a 'made' man in what would later become known as The Giordano Family, or... ???
AHHHHHHH !,,,,,,,GO BACK WHERE YOU CAME FROM !!!!!!!!!!!!! LUIGI ,,,,,,,,,,,,
You can still walk those streets at any time of the day or night and not worry about hoods and thugs. Guess the mob still controls the streets there, because it's peaceful and quiet. I've lived in St. Louis all my life and the Hill has always been the safest neighborhood. Hard to rent a place there, you have to know someone or have family there.
