She's a brainwashed neo-liberal. The guerrilla wars were meant to liberate Honduras from foreign intervention.

@Karime18 a quick Google search shows that Tiburcio Carías Andino was indeed a dictator. He helped form a military regime and was in power from 1933-1949 and kept the banana companies in power and crushed protests against them. If you know anything about what a banana republic is, any leader who helped them take advantage in their own country was a bad person and history sees them as such.

Very interesting story of what, so far, seems to be a forgotten Honduran revolutionary hero. It seems to me Ferrera was on the side of the people and justice regardless of the political ideology in power at different times. It seems he was the man that people relied upon and call to whenever presidents in power would not give up the presidency when their term was up. Interesting that he would even swear allegiance to the controlling powers (United Fruit Company) for a while so he can stay alive and live to fight another day. I would be proud to have had a man of conviction as he was as my great grandfather. Just my personal opinion.

I suspect liberal versus nationalist in the context of the time in Honduras is not at all equivalent to the words today in the USA.

Kinda sorta its up to the individual party to figure that out. Liberal originally meant something like supporting the ideals of the enlightenment.

What exactly does this change though? She didn't know her grandfather nor does she owe him anything. She is is her own person whose political views were shaped by her lived experience. It's not unusual for families to be fiercely liberal yet have family members who are conservative and vice versa. Politics in other countries are very different than America including the spectrum of what is conservative vs liberal. That too during a whole different time period. This reads as though you insinuate that she should somehow change her views because of this discovery about her grandfather and/or feel a certain way about her views and his in light of this discovery. It's really not that deep.

Indeed you are misunderstanding the video and being too self-referential using modern US political language. The 2 parties in Honduras were the liberal party and the nascent NATIONALIST party, not the conservative party. The aims of those two parties had *nothing* to do with the platforms of current US American politics but were about the colonial power of the US business (backed by the US government) over the Honduran economy and its political sovereignty. Countries all over the world use the word "liberal" to describe political parties that do not reflect what is considered liberal policy in the US. Liberal does not equal the US Democratic party.
