AMD 6900 XT Silence / NOCTUA MOD - V1

GPU: XFX 6900 XT MERC 319
You need:
1x PWM Cable Spliter - www.arctic.de/4-Pin-PWM-Fan-S...
1x VGA to PWM Adapter - amzn.to/3WsOcqX
3x NOCTUA NF-A9 Fans - amzn.to/3jvryzU
6x NOCTUA NM-SFC18 Fan Clips (AliExpress or ask Noctua Support)
The Temperatures remain nearly identical, so there is no real performance loss, or it is within the margin of error. The Noctua Fans spin slower (max 2000rpm) but manage to stay silent and keep the temperature at the same level as the original cooler do.

    2 IMPORTANT TIPS... 1) I did a similar Noctua mod and had bad COIL WHINE caused by the change in power draw (even in light fan usage oddly). I had TWO fans and solved this by moving the 2nd fan (the one NOT over the GPU PROCESSOR itself) to a MOTHERBOARD fan header. I then uses the software "FAN CONTROL" to control the fan using the GPU temperature reported by the graphics cards sensor. Worked perfectly! Likely you could run ALL fans to the motherboard if you needed to. 2) I used EVGA Precision software for the main fan (and the light overclock) but it CRASHED on startup. I realized the reason was the LIGHTS (LED's) were enabled in the EVGA software but I'd removed the shroud with the LED's and its controller. I UNINSTALLED then reinstalled the EVGA software then made sure NOT to check "LED SYNC."

    This is how I do it aswell. Didn't even think about coil whine as I run lower power already because of it, but it probably does help with that too. This method bypasses any 0rpm mode and factory curves that the gpu header uses. It's harder to remove the card but it doesn't effect looks in a black case and it works perfectly.

    I'm kind of surprised that at least one oem doesn't make a heatsink that accepts after market fans natively. You'd think that fewer moving parts would be a dream for returns and cost.

  • @itsnophun

    @itsnophun

    Nobody can understand it. All oem only wants 10 cent fans (I'm obviously exaggerating, not oem has ever spent that much on a fan). Putting $1 dollar fans is an outragerous idea to them, and they can't imagine the consumer wants to spend more than $1 on airflow to a $1000 graphics card.

  • @bobtheblob2770

    @bobtheblob2770

    @@itsnophun it might be because the profit margins of being an oem making a graphics card is so slim. They need to make them as cheap as possible to be competitive. When buying a gpu, most people just buy the cheapest board for the chip they want. slapping on $45 in fans just doesn’t make enough sense for an oem unless trying to make an extra premium edition

  • @photonboy999

    @photonboy999

    The COST argument doesn't make sense to me. The far better cooling with better fans means a CHEAPER HEATSINK makes sense and the heatsinks cost more. There's rapidly diminishing returns as heatsinks get taller which is also why a 2nd fan on a CPU cooler (like a Noctua NH-D15) doesn't add much cooling at the same noise level. If the card was 2.5 slots thick they could actually use solid, thicker Noctua fans, reduce the heatsink height and the cooling would be better, quieter and likely cheaper overall.

  • @bobtheblob2770

    @bobtheblob2770

    Жыл бұрын

    @@photonboy999 you don't get better cooling from better fans. you get better cooling from more airflow, which the easy way to create is with loud, high rpm fans. Good fans like noctua can create a medium amount of airflow at quiet levels. The fans that cool a lot are loud not because they are chosen to be, but because physics said so

  • @itsnophun

    @itsnophun

    Spreading the heat properly (vapor chambers / heatpipes concepts) is probably the most important part. But they should never neglect the fans since good fans will result in a quieter and cooler experience, and they are also a common point of failure due to their poor quality.

    Not sure the more common 3D printing thermoplastics would hold up to heatsink temps long term without deforming. I know PLA tends to soften at around 60C even though the temperatures used to print it are a little over three times that. Gotta either print using something with high temperature resistence, or maybe cut something out of thin metal sheet instead.

    The temperatures are identical within margin of error. The Noctuas had much less RPM so i assume the static pressure is much higher than on the stock fans. I am shure you can achieve better temps, about 1-4 Degress, when you replace the Thermal paste, but this will surely void your warranty, at least here in Europe. The Nocctua NF-A9-PWM has a very goof static Pressure of 2,28 mm H₂O and a flow of 78,9 m³/h. Using 3x92mm is a better choice than going with 2x120mm, regardless which fans you choose. As far as i can see there is nothing on the Market that beats the 3x NF-A9-PWM to a reasonable price. noctua.at/de/products/fan/nf-a9-pwm I recommend you to wait until i got the V2 online, the mod will get easier. 🙂

    @@coolcat23 well this is simple math. 120mm performs about 30% better than a 92mm fan. 3x92mm = 300%, 2x120mm = 260%. Alone by this numbers you have a disatvantage of about 15% in total for the 120mm fans. Then you will have significant overhangs where the airstream does not hit the cooler and just blows by. Therefore 3x92mm will always be better than 2x120mm. Yeah static pressure etc. will move the numbers here and there a bit, but in total there is no chance for the 2x120mm to win. Except you compare 3 really shitty 92mm fans with 2 premium 120m fans.

    Hello. I have 2x Artic 120 mm standard 1500 rpm PWM fans connected to my fan header of my graphics card Msi AMD Radeon Rx 480. And exactly the way the original fans were connected, i.e. 4 pins and 3 pins. Only one of the two fans gives the RPM level signal. Both have same colors and I thnink wire colors is standard for these 4 colors. But now the automatic fan control no longer works. By default the fans run at 100% all the time even though they are silent fans and should not run without load. In Afterburner I can switch from automatic to manual and control it between 25% and 100% and manual control works! And the measurement diagram also shows me 900 - 1500 RPM. It looks like the card can carry the load of the bigger fans running them at 100%, no problem. But somehow the automatic mode fan control no longer works and I can't understand why (Temps are low 26°C) ? I see 2 options: 1) During the driver installation you will notice that the fans are being tested. It could possibly be that the installation detects an error because the fans do not spin up to 2000 or 3000 rpm like the original fans. And the installation then sets the automatic mode to permanent 100% fan speed. 2) You have to crack the firmware of the card and readjust the fan control of the firmware? I guess it can only be the first though. That means there's nothing you can do except use fans with the same RPM. That no error and bad setting occurs ? It's not a problem in itself. Since you can start Msi with Startup with 25% fan. And the fans aren't loud at 900 RPM. And before you start a game, set the fans to 100% with Afterburner. and after playing again to 25% manually. However, an automatic is better.

    This mod may be interesting, but it is a pointless waste of money, The XFX 6900XT Merc 319 already has great cooling with quiet fans. And without before / after temp and noise data you have no idea if this is worth doing in the first place.

    Kind of pointless honestly I have a merc 319 black edition limited and it wasn’t bad at all on max oc air , I put a bykski block on it full custom loop and modded bios it’s a fuckin beast without any temp issues @ 2.85ghz I mean the shit doesn’t even hit past 64c on any max load benchmarking nor gaming so this mod is moot tbh

    These mods are pointless you’ll still hit a wall with bios mod and oc these cards can handle a shit tone of OC if you block them and do custom loop way beyond air ! Way too much bs for minimal gains if you cool it on water and have a proper setup ive seen easily3.0ghz core without killing voltage I can run modded bios on blocked custom with 2.85ghz all day every day and never hit 70c never not games maxxed nor benchmarks !
