    You can tell how much of a cat-lover someone is by the amount of contortion and discomfort they will go to, to prioritise the comfort of their cat. Here we see Martin risking a synth filled with hot tea, ergo Martin is definitely a proper cat-lover. Oh, and lovely sounds also ;) ;)

    Love Enso, except for the slight glitches/pops sometimes, but since they don't get recorded into the loop, it's fine just a bit annoying during live streams. Having the option for going Record into Overdub is crucial, not only to preserve tails/FX etc coming into the input, but it also just keeps the whole process of live looping fast, smooth and seamless. My favourite thing to do with Enso is to decouple playback speed and record speed, it's great to have playback -2 octaves, as long as you play the notes high enough it leads to some really nice ambient, especially with long reverb tails pitched down, which just sound gorgeous. One thing I wish Enso had, is the ability to add your own plugins into the feedback path, so that you could for example insert your own filters, or saturation/distortion plugins.

    Great video - Neptun(e) is adorable! You can disable the 1 minute restriction very easy! I found this in the menu: "Long Memory The LONG MEMORY switch determines how much memory (RAM) Enso reserves for recording. By default, the switch is off, and every instance of Enso consumes about 22MB, enough memory for one minute of stereo audio recorded with a 48KHz sampling rate. If you turn on LONG, each instance of Enso sets aside 10 times as much, so that your loop can be up to 10 minutes long (if recorded at 48KHz)."

    Martin, thanks for your kind contributions and dedication to the electronica community. Quick question: What's the difference between a recorded loop in Enso and a recorded clip in Live (from a recording point of view only)? And compared to Live's Looper?

  • @MartinStuertzer

    @MartinStuertzer

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you for your kind words! If you record a clip in Ableton it will always repeat as the exact same copy. With Enso (or other loopers that have a similar workflow) you can overdub (= record new material) on top of the same loop and apply filters and other effects that change the recorded material over time. The Ableton Looper is working quite similar, but it lacks the nice graphical representation of the recorded waveform and a few other features.

    As an Ableton user I am torn on buying Enso, apart from the prettier UI the functionality is a direct copy of Ableton’s looper, except for being able to unlink the record and playback speeds. Is that enough to justify having it, I am not sure. On the other hand Ableton’s looper has audio tap points that let you send and return the audio in the record path through another track, allowing you to put any plugin effects you like into the recording on each overdub pass, not just the fixed set of effects Enso has; that allows for some creative destruction of the looped audio that is quite fun. So it is a bit six of one and half a dozen of the other for me.

  • @stateazure

    @stateazure

    Жыл бұрын

    Ableton Looper is objectively the better looper, but when I tested the two in comparison, the pitched down playback from Enso just sounded better to me and I'm not sure why that is yet. I didn't know you could insert any FX you want into the feedback path of Ableton Looper either, that's huge imo.

  • @deepsubmicronmusic

    @deepsubmicronmusic

    Жыл бұрын

    @@stateazure yeah I have only just got into using it because I struggled to understand how to actually use the looper at all for ages, really until I saw your video using it instead of Enzo recently. So I decided to do that thing nobody ever does and go read the manual to see if I could finally figure it out and the looper insert audio stuff jumped out at me; although given Ableton’s general component style philosophy I suppose it should have been expected that you could do this. Now in fairness having to add another audio track and set up the routing isn’t as immediate as just having the selection of fx right there as you do in Enzo, so maybe not so convenient for what you do in live steams for example.

  • @stateazure

    @stateazure

    Жыл бұрын

    @@deepsubmicronmusic True, Enso is definitely more immediate to use. I wish there were more options out there. I'm hoping Bitwig eventually make a good audio looper device with control over the feedback path, since that is my preferred DAW.

    there is a plugin called augustus loop from expert sleepers. fantastic features like up to 60 min. loop time, a real tape-like inertia when switching times and also the possibility to use own plugins in the feedback loop. however, it is already relatively old (but M1 ready) and terrible to look at. so i've been looking for an adequate replacement for ages. Do you mean MIDI looping tracks vs Enso/Looper? IMO the difference between standard looping tracks i.e. midi clips and using an actual audio looper are huge, but one doesn't replace the other. You can't for example playback the loop 2 octaves lower, and reverse, well you could but you would just be transposing rather than actually pitching the audio + FX down, which can result in really beautiful timbre and frequency changes that you just won't get with midi clips
