    Amazons was actually loose adaptation of a short story called Agbewe's sword written by Charles R. Saunders.

  • @blueghostfire9038

    @blueghostfire9038

    Mr. Saunders wrote more stories with the character which are collected in a book called Dossouye, which is supposed to be the name of the lead character. They were supposed to be a fictional version of Dahomey amazons set in a fictional version of Africa. I own the first book, but never got around to buying the second.

    I came on here to mention this. And the fact that Charles Saunders wrote the script for this movie. That's why it has a surprising amount of plot for a Corman film. And why all the characters have African names but are played by white actors.

    One correction on this. This is not in "medieval times", this is obviously set in the "Days of Yor". This should not be confused with Preyorian cultures such as in "One Million Years B.C." or the Postyorians (Neoyorians) such as one sees in "The Man in the Iron Mask". There is no doubt, however, that this movie is set in the times when the Mighty Yor walked the Earth.

    Re lion jumping: this is often a plot point in the African novels of H. Rider Haggard, where as in real life it's a good idea to pull together a ring of thorns (bomas) before camping for the night to keep lions out. But sometimes it doesn't work, and the lions can jump in and out anyway. Carrying off human bodies (not necessarily dead yet) in the process. Also factors into the real-life story of the serial-killing lions of Tsavo (although I don't recall if jumping is much of a plot point in the film adaptation "The Ghost and the Darkness".)

    Love this. Another one that I wish you would do is She, starring Sandahl Bergman from 1984. It’s in the Swords and Sorcery genre, but with a killer twist: it takes place in the future after an apocalypse. It is, at the risk of gross understatement, completely bonkers. Among a BUNCH of other stuf, the movie starts with one of our heroines kidnapped by a a gang wearing swastika emblazoned football helmets, our heroes, on a quest to rescue the kidnapped heroine, escape from preppy werewolves, a communist sex torture chamber, and must defeat a Robin Williams knockoff defending a bridge with celebrity impersonations and the ability for any body part to regenerate into a duplicate. It’s much more tongue in cheek than a lot of these movies, but has just as much nudity. It’s free on KZread.

    If you like Columbo, I'd recommend "Kolchak: The Night Stalker". Not to be confused with Kojack. It's a show from the 70s about a Chicago newspaper journalist who investigates supernatural events. It's based of a made for tv movie that was wildly successful, so a series was bought, in addition to several more tv movies. This show is amazing, charming, of its time, and worth tracking down if you are into this type of show. It's also a major influence on the creation of the XFiles, and it stars the inimitable Darrin McGavin

    One of my favorite cheesy movies, made tolerable by a few solid performances and a great script by Sword and Sorcery legend Charles Saunders. One thing that always fascinated me about this movie was how Kalongo has clearly read the Evil Overlord list and defies most of the clichés of fantasy villains. Like being smart enough not to trust the traitorous amazon general on the grounds that "if she could be betray her own people, she could betray you." And being smart enough to want to get a hold of the one weapon that can kill him instead of trusting it will be safe in the Cave of Wonders beyond the Gorge of Eternal Peril in the Distant Land of Doom in the County of Gentrification. The irony is his gaming the system saves the amazons. If he hadn't sent his lioness after them, they would have been captured by the bandits and sold off to be sacrificed after a few days as camp followers. And the movie would have been much shorter. Still, great review!

Tele 5 is a TV Station that almost runs automatically, there are two, may be three, workers but the rest were machines. Thanks! I don't think they liked me much. A little inside on it - I was called up and asked to be on the show like 2 days before the show because someone else cancelled. I was very sick at the time (which I mentioned briefly in the show) but I didn't want to miss the opportunity. I really didn't know what to expect. I was prepared to talk movies (I always am) so the first hour was fine. After that they went into some subjects I had no information on and I didn't have anything to interject, hence why I just kind of stayed out of it. I didn't know they hated anime, I brought the game up as a goof and man, the whole vibe changed. Looking at the comments, I don't think the audience liked me either. I'd happily go back on if they asked me and I'd be much more prepared this time. However, they probably forgot I existed.

    @@GoodBadFlicks Yeah, I really loved the first hour and having someone on to talk weird, obscure movies was so much fun. I've been a listener of their show since the very beginning, spanning like 12+ years so I have seen all the changes the show has gone through, good and bad. Lots of long time listeners have many gripes with the show, the hosts, etc but we still come back because there's nothing else quite like it. Really wish you hadn't felt that way and been treated like that by the hosts and the comments -- they've lost many of their best guests from ever returning that way. I appreciate the thought out response!

    one of my favorites of the 1980s Sword & Sorcery cycle. I enjoyed how, despite it not doing a good job exploring it, there is a backstory and world building this movie exists in. it was years later i discover there is a reason for this, this movie was based on the short story "Agbewe's Sword" by noted fantasy author Charles R Saunders, who also wrote the screenplay to this movie. Saunders was a notable African American writer in the fantasy genre, best known for his Imaro stories, about a Conan-esque hero in a mythic fantasy Africa. i've read the short story and it's better than the movie, and the thing with the magic trees was explained better. Obviously the makers of the movie decided to white-wash all the characters unfortunately.

    Yeah, there's a whole thing in Saunders books about how every person has three souls and they are tied to a tree when they are born. That's why killing the tree is such a big deal. Of course it turns out it doesn't kill Dyala. It just makes her unable to join with her ancestors in the afterlife... so she's kinda sorta immortal at the end. (This barely gets touched on with the seer Azindati, who says she is "deathless or just dead.")

    I don't say this often but I think this clearly deserves a re-do. I think a larger budget production from another studio would do the source material justice. I think there is massive potential there for a great sword and sorcery classic. I love this movie but it definitely is the truncated version of the story. Perhaps one of the bigger indie studios or even something like Universal. Just keep it away from Disney.
