When I learned to set up my own guitar and do the basic maintenance and repair stuff like filing down the jagged frets, repairing the electronics, and balancing the tremolo, it opened up a world of cheap guitars that I could make up for the shortcuts they took in production. I think anyone who loves guitars should learn how to do the basic stuff. You can take a cheap guitar and bring it up to the level of an $800+ guitar by simply doing the things they skipped at the factory.

Setup has become major factor in the difference in guitars with how good guitar factories have gotten and how much is computer operated. Things like PLEK can make them even more even, and if it gets more affordable they will get even more alike.

I have a mahogany JS32 I bought for $150 which is the same guitar with a floyd rose on it and it's a beast. Pickups sound awesome and mine also has perfect fretwork, the action is so low with no buzz and the neck is slim and fast.

Awesome !! What a fantastic upgrade you done did ! I'm learning so much, I think once we move and get settled in the new house, I'm going to set up a bench and get started reviving that Harmony kids guitar with the blue Lucite body for my youngest grandson. We'll see if it was worth the $4.99 we paid for it at Salvation Army.

I haven't bought many used instruments from Amazon, but my experience with buying used items from Amazon has been pretty good overall. It can be hit or miss for sure. The one instrument I definitely remember buying was a used ukulele. I saved about 45% off the regular price, it was like new, and all it needed a new set of strings. I've bought other things listed as "acceptable" and they show up in new condition. I've had a few bad experiences like the time I bought a used like new ratchet. It arrived all beat up and missing all of the ratcheting parts. Most recently I bought a set of lettered punches and it was a total mess and not anywhere close to the full alphabet. You win some and you lose some!

Me too! I’ve gotten $60 rain shoes for my service dog that were from Amazon Warehouse for $11. Do I care if the box is beat up if the shoes are new inside? There’s no risk either - if you don’t like it, just send it back like anything else.

Jacksons are nice. Just sold my original owner 1990 Soloist Pro MIJ. Picked up an inexpensive Jackson Dinky JS22 for $140 new on amazn. Plays great out of the box. The string angle on the head and standard nuts are a PITA. With a locking nut, no worries.

Sweet, a Jackson. I wonder what model that is. I love them, but I don’t know too much about them is that a relatively newer model? I’m sure it’s not made in the US at that price. But you see? Plays great. No need to be a cork sniffer about it! Check who the seller is, btw. Sometimes it gives you a clue if the seller deals with re-selling used instruments or whether it may have been a return scammer lol. I would also think the description would have had to tell you more details beyond just stating it’s used. Btw, why not just use Cathy’s hairdryer as a “heat gun” - it would have a cool blast button that would come in handy to harden the wax inside back immediately! 😉👍🏻 🤘🏻🎸

*I've been seeing these too and a Jackson product so cheap is phenomenal, and I'm happy to see these major brands are remaining competitive while Gibson is in bankruptcy and Fender just barely remains competitive with these price points.* I used to talk to the guy that owns the Bellcat branding years ago on Ebay and a couple other spots. *He actually asked me for name suggestions, I came up with Belltone, and maybe several days later, he coined Bellcat lol.* I've also repotted pickups with really no change afterward, but if I were to do it again, I would get a glue pot and use hot glue sticks! *I guarantee that would eliminate any microphonic effects you're getting.*

I'm the same when it comes to neck profiles. I love every one I've owned. From my Gibson LP R8 to my Ibanez Jem. Every time I've played a new guitar I think, oh this is the neck profile for me. Until I get a new guitar with a different profile. So I've succumbed to the realization that I love all neck profiles and am comfortable on any. From my baseball bat R8's profile, to my Edwards blade thin super Strat.

If you melt a bit of fresh solder on your tip just before you go in, the melted solder will melt the old solder faster, then you're not applying heat to anything long enough to damage it, looks better for video, and will possibly save a circuit board or solder pad for you in the future. Great Video!

Now throw in a Dimarzio super distortion humbucker in the bridge and the bobbin color of your choice. Now throw in a Dactivator neck humbucker into the neck slot on your guitar. Now turn and burn those solos and punchy thrash rythums. Use some awesome high ratio tuners, and remove all the fretwire, and add some STAINLESS steel fretwire. Now you are all set.

The H-S-S or S-S-S style of Strats have always been my favorites. But I've always thought the Jackson's punch well above their weight class. As far as H-H guitars go, You'd think they're like LP's or SG's since the configuration is similar. But the cheaper, high-output ceramic pickups of the Jackson's just growl and produce darker tones than I normally think of when I think of Gibson's (SG's and LP's). While Gibson's are great all-rounders for Humbucker tones, they just can't give the same Dark Metal Growl that Jackson's do. And I've never picked up a LP or SG that was anywhere near as comfortable to play as a Jackson.

I read somewhere from one luthier that using sheet metal screws in place of the wood screws for the neck results in a tighter bond but I haven't had a chance to test it myself

Yeah....no. Metal screws are never gonna work better than wood screws on wood.

Yeah, that's basically what I said to another dude in the comments. Guitar-snobs looking down on Jackson are top-gringe.

Jacksons have some of the best action for shredding, and come with a great manual that details how to set them up properly. Some of the JSs give Squiers and even some Fenders a run for the money - sibling brands that they are now. The extreme headstock can create some tension that could affect tuning and nut wear - one has to be OK with that. Overall though, an easy choice for a high quality guitar.

Very true about the headstock. Becomes a non-issue on guitars with fr locking nut.

Is that one a pre-Fender Jackson? I'd love to see a shoot out between it and a new Fender-managed Jackson. You guys have quite the crew there. Always brings a smile when Kathy gets involved.

Got a JS3 concert bass on Ebay. Used but in mint condition. The only issue was a missing truss rod cover. Didnt even have light surface scratches. Paid $145. Seller was a pawn shop.

For what it’s worth, I’ve bought a couple “used “guitars from Amazon. If you notice a seller, they are usually a Guitars shop and it’s probably like you said either a return or a demo model that gets beat up a little bit. I found a Squier CV jazz master and I could only find one little mark on this one but the box was damaged so it was only about $250.
