Amazon's Favourite Turntable! | Sony PS-LX310BT Unboxing + Review

Grab some snacks because it's a long one today!
I was on Amazon UK and stumbled across the Sony PS-LX310BT turntable. It is a fully automatic, bluetooth turntable, that is selling like hotcakes on Amazon. Is it any good though?

The Sony has a spring-counterbalanced tonearm, so you need to measure it at the same height as the surface of a record in order to get an accurate reading. The kind of scale you used typically measures about half a gram too high when placed on top of the platter with this kind of tonearm, so your turntable is probably tracking at around 3.2 grams, which is close enough to the factory spec of 3 grams to not be worth worrying about.

Thanks so much for commenting, I’m a big fan of your channel! I’m aware of the spring counterbalanced tonearm (I watched your video about the lp60 and how to accurately check the tracking force). But my scale is very thin and I did check it against my 180g records and the thickness was practically identical so I do still believe my reading was fairly accurate although yes, for thinner records the tracking force will be lighter! :)

Also, I have two of these Sony turntables. One is attached via the RCA cables to a Sony 5.1 receiver. The turntable is sitting on a totally balanced sturdy cabinet. The turntable sounds awesome with this system when the receiver is set to multi stereo. The turntable plays through a large 5.1 speaker set up. I have had no skipping issues at all. I do acknowledge that if you tap the turntable with your fingernail you will hear it. The second turntable is attached via the RCA cables to an Andover Spinbase Speaker System with the Andover Spin Subwoofer . It is placed on an Andover Spin Stand that is also totally balanced. Again it is awesome with no skipping. Both systems have no hum. In the beginning I did use the built in bluetooth which transmitted to a bluetooth receiver that was attached to the Sony receiver. It connected in no time and there was no latency. In fact as soon as the turntable turned on you could hear the bluetooth kick in and you could hear the needle through the speakers when it touched down to the record. For bluetooth the sound was excellent, clear and sharp sound. I decided to go ahead and use the cables because I know you encounter some loss with bluetooth although it still sounded great. The tone arm is even damped as it lowers to the record. The operation is quite smooth actually. The convenience of this turntable is worth it to me over a manual turntable. I also have a Pro Ject manual turntable with an Ortofon Cartridge. Due to the inconvenience of this turntable I have it in sealed storage. To be honest with you I can't tell a whole lot of difference in sound from the Pro ject vs. the Sony. In my youth I grew up with Magnavox Console Stereos. I got my first expensive Technics Turntable in the 80's. When CD's came out I said I never wanted to see a record again. Now I have gravitated back to vinyl. There is just something great about a good vinyl recording. Now I listen to vinyl and streaming. I have thousands of CD's that I hardly play anymore. Granted this is not the most elegant turntable out there but it looks good , sounds excellent and more than gets the job done. Yes, if it were built out of a solid substance the bumping sound would be eliminated. And yes it should have a ground (even though I have encountered no issues). But the platter and tonearm are aluminum and that means a lot. A changeable cartridge would be nice but this cartridge sounds beautiful. Overall I am extremely pleased with this turntable. The Pro Ject was $500.00 and I hate it. Not for its quality or sound reproduction, that is great. It is just so inconvenient to have to get up and turn it off at the end of the record. I can't really lay back and relax and possibly go to sleep knowing my needle will be grinding away. The Sony give very good sound and oh so convenient.

Imo these turntables are great for beginners who don't wanna spend a lot of money and mainly want it for bluetooth use, because they don't have room for an amp and massive speakers. The fact that it's full automatically is also great for ease of use. Great review BTW. Keep up the good work!

My Sony 310 connects to all four of my bluetooth devices within a second or two with no problems. Stylus weight is spot on. I've never had any trouble with the tonearm skipping. Once while closing the dust cover, I accidentally dropped the dust cover from about an inch in height but luckily the stylus didn't skip at all. The two rubber buttons on the front sides of the lid cushioned the fall. I've had no problems at all with mine even while tapping on the plinth. I don't use this turntable daily. I just wanted a matching Sony turntable for my Sony 7.2 home theater system. I have a vintage Kenwood component system that I use for playing record albums in my collection. You might have a misshapen or misaligned stylus from the factory.

Nice through review. Yours is more through then some others that are on YT. In case someone hasn't answered about the strobe markings on the bottom side of the platter, those are for helping the TT keep proper consistent speed. The unit has a speed control circuit to keep the speed even. As long as the proper speed was set at the factory. As far as the BT issues, I am wondering if it may be due to a difference between the BT version of the TT and the device it is connecting to. Also maybe there is some outside interference (.i.e. WIFI) that is an issue. As to the non upgrade-able cart. this product is aimed at the beginner, entry level user. Which most users in that category aren't looking for features that a more experienced users look for. The tracking force is not an issue at all. It's not going to ruin your vinyl nor decrease their lifespan.

I've a Sony television hooked up to a Sony soundbar, Sony speakers, Sony telephone, two pairs of Sony headphones, but watching your review I'm glad I bought a Fluance turntable. I looked at this model, but I noticed some of the same things that you brought up except I noticed them in the Amazon description (no counterweight, permanent cartridge, etc). It looked like this was designed for the kind of folks who would normally buy a Crosely. I'm never going to use bluetooth on a turntable, I use that to broadcast from my telephone or computer to my headphones. For a turntable, I want analogue all the way to the speakers (which to me, is kind of the point of spending extra money on records over CDs, music files or streaming music). The only use I can see for an automatic arm is if I had one of those mechanisms to stack records and drop them down one at a time. My Fluance is semi-automatic, which means when it gets to the centre of the record it stops spinning after a few turns. When I was a kid, my dad had a Marantz set up in the living room. It had an automatic return for the arm, but he always set it down by hand. I've actually been using the little drop lever on the Fluance which drops it gently enough to avoid that little thump you hear when you set it down by hand.

Nah. This turntable is way better than those cheap Crosley suitcases. Especially if you own good bookshelf speakers. And I don't use the bluetooth feature much, but it comes in handy when my roommates are watching TV and I just want to play some records. I don't care about the permanent cartridge or counterweight or any of that crap "audiophiles" say I'm supposed to care about. I just want a good turntable that plays my records well. A lot of people just want that and there's nothing wrong with it.

Hi. Nice review. I just set up this turntable today and bluetoothed it through my JVC mini system. It only cut out once although I think it's automatically registering the device. I checked the specs and the Bluetooth receiver needs to have an A2DP profile? My hifi apparently has this and although I've only been using this product for a couple of hours I really like it. It looks stylish if you have limited space and sounds great. I will update if I have any troubleshooting issues later on...

I went with this over the audio technica partly because I prefer the more simple look and feel. No issues here with Bluetooth, using a Google Nest Hub and it holds a strong signal and sounds impressive enough. I will say the acoustic feedback is tricky to eliminate but it’s so barely noticeable and I imagine tweaking my setup will help. Use to be $199 here in US though and has risen to $230 likely due to vinyl craze. Can’t complain otherwise.

This was on of the first turntables I had in mind earlier this year for my return to vinyl, besides the Audio Technica LP60. I think the previous model, the USB one was way much better than this one, but it's been discontinued. What deterred me from buying this one was the BT function, I read other reviews complaining about how they couldn't pair it with their speakers, also the sound quality is not as good. Sony is not what it used to be.... I wanted to purchase a Technics, like the one my mid school friend had, but to this day I can't recall what model he had. Maybe an SL 1200MK2, or a 1600MK2, 1700MK2 or 1800MK2? Or an SL D2? Anyway, I ended up buying and Audio Technica 140XP. I decided to spoil myself a bit, but I might resell it to get a Technics SL 1700-1800 MK2 because I can't stop thinking about these... I might upload my unboxing vid for the 140XP 🤔 Nice review! I hope you keep uploading more videos, you are quite good at this.

Just finished watching your entire video. May I give you a few solutions to these problems for your future purchase if you return this. If you get skipping, push down on the lowering lever in back of your tone arm. The are a bit stiff for a while on a new turntable. Make sure your speakers are on a different table or on a shelf or floor to stop feedback. You don't need an adjustable counter weight with a permanent cartridge. You can up grade the needle to an elliptical one for much better sound. They are poitier than your conical. About 30 US dollars. The cartridge will last years Mine is 39 years old. The clip to hold down the tonearm is not used here because of the automatic mechanism which will break if tonearm is clipped Your right about that. Bt and the nice design makes this. Appealing but not the price. Your right again. The mounted cable cables and no ground is just inexcusable. If that's how you spell it.😄 I subbed today so looking forward to your next video. Thanks!👍👍👍

Hi Joseph, thanks so much for watching and subscribing! I agree that you don’t need an adjustable counterweight if you are never going to upgrade the cartridge itself; however that does mean that it should come with the correct tracking force, this one didn’t and there is no way to change it. Thank you for your suggestion on pushing down the lowering lever, this is something I did try with this turntable. Even with the lever all the way down it was prone to skipping with any vibration, I think it’s just due to the plinth being very hollow and light.

This turntable mechanism has been made since the 90’s. It was used in the Aiwa PX-850 then, it used by audio technica lp60 and lp3 that’s not saying there is anything wrong with it. It is very likely to be an audio technica 3600L. I am amazed how much the price has risen for these compared to a couple of years ago, The sound issue you had with pairing but no sound, I have the same with my lp60 BT. You have to make sure the speaker is on before you turn the Bluetooth on the turntable on. If I turn the turntable on in Bluetooth mode then turn my speaker on it pairs but no sound. I paid £15 for my lp60 as it was sold as broken and I was able to fix it (new belt needed). So I am not fussed about the BT issues, if I paid £200 for it not sure I would be happy.

Bought the Sony in Feb. (23). Seriously hating on it. I know the cartridge is fixed but wonder if the stylus can be upgraded to something listenable? I just don;'t like it. Permanent RCA cables. So many negatives. Wish i'd seen your video before getting it. It was on th store shelf. I wanted a turntable but didn't want to order one online. Gave it a month but I found out the hard way the store return period is only 15 days. I' stuck.

In Sony’s defense, they didn’t build this. There are only two or three manufacturers of turntables in Asia. OEMs decide they want to sell turntables so they pick the features they want to include, design the box art and the manufacturer handles the building and boxing. This automatic mechanism has been around the the better part of thirty years. I have the Pioneer PL-990 which has it, the AT-LP60 has it, and also older models of Denon, Aiwa and Onkyo have it. If i were Sony, I’d be more concerned about consumer perception. Sony hasn’t co-opted its brand like Philips, RCA, Sansui or Kenwood, most of which are controlled by holding companies. Sony probably only sells tuuntabless and portable cassette players to ride the nostalgia wave, which doesn’t make them enough to justify them reopening a turntable assembly line in Malaysia. Sony could, however, have more control over the final product. Let’s face it, you’re right. This product is a $125 turntable from anyone else, but the extra money is the “Sony tax” which was a value add back in the day for impeccable build quality and unmatched service and support. It’s still that way for the things they continue to make; TVs, cameras, consoles, etc. On items like this, it’s more of a cash grab

Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Yeah a lot of companies just take turntables made by factories in China and slap their badge on it, Sony is no different. I personally wouldn’t put my name on something I didn’t feel was high quality, especially if I had spend many years making people think I made premium products

@@georgiacurrievinyl8882 Right now I have only Sony products in my audio system (receiver, linear tracking turntable, cassette, standalone CD recorder, PS/4, DVD carousel) the only things not Sony are my speakers and my Apple TV. These are well built things made by a Sony that only partially exists.

Yo, children, I was a Sony fan for a very long time and I continue to respect the brand. Just to lay out a bit of advice... this TT would probably make many of you happy because it will light up your ear buds or portable speakers and you don't have to jump up and go lift the needle. It probably sounds about as good as your buds or speaker. However, anyone out there who is searching for great sound reproduction, this one is not for you. The simple fact that there is no counter-weight on the tone arm, which cannot be upgraded, is more than enough reason to run. Save your money and keep looking. It's out there and you can find it. I FREAKIN' LOVE YINYL

Ich hätte mir diesen Player längst geholt, wenn nicht die Cinch-Kabel fest verbaut wären! Was nützt mir Bluetooth, wenn da unschön nutzlose Kabel 'rumbaumeln! Ich habe den Sony DH190BT-Receiver, am Phono-Eingang einen 1977er WEGA PL 555 Full-Automatic-Turntable und würde den PS-LX310BT als zweiten Player gern über BT betreiben.

When you take the tracking force, remove the platter Matt and measure it on the bare platter. It probable measure 3.5 or less which is perfect for the at3600l. Take care .

The Sony has a really great phono equalizer. It really compensates well for the crappy AT cartridge that they all use. The sound quality of the AT LP 60X is closer to the Crosley T400 than the Sony ps lx 310 bt..

Well made video, but the turntable is a pile of junk. A Rega P1 or pretty much any ProJect turntable will sound far better than this. The money they wasted making it automatic and the clearly dodgy electronics could have been spent on a decent plinth, platter and cartridge. Don’t forget, the reason most people like vinyl is the expense and the inconvenience - my main reasons😀

Some people just can't hear a difference and I'm one of those people. I have this turntable and my audiophile friend was so disgusted by it 😂 He invited me over to listen to his Fluance turntable (which I must admit was very sexy) with that nice blue cartridge and some nice Kanto YU6s and preamp. Honest to freaking God. I heard a difference and it did sound slightly better, but not enough for me to drop an extra two to three hundred bucks on that crap. 😂Some people like you and my roommate can hear a difference. Other people like me, don't give a shit. We just want to hear a record on a turntable that's 10x better than those crappy suitcases.
