When I purchased one of those drives (not that specific one) all the "viruses" were inside the PS4 and Windows Games so I just took the retro games and never messed with the newer games. I didn't trust all the cracked exe files but they could of been false positives who knows better safe than sorry.

I'd just run everything off the hard disk. as long as you don't install anything, I don't see how this could "infect" your computer, if they even are viruses at all

@danusty -- if you run an infected executable, it doesn't matter if you 'install' it or not -- it can and will infect your computer.

I read the reviews on Amazon quite few people bitching saying they scanned it first and over 20 viruses were found and more than one buyer bitching about it why I bought a 1tb usb harddrive n made my own batocera build,it didn't come over night alot of downloading however I know mine isn't one giant trojan horse drive.😮

They're never 100% but Windows comes pre installed with spyware. Best to use these with dedicated off-line hardware emulation boxs. Aka, build a mini PC and never go online with it

Batocera is a known Linux distribution to do exactly that: organize your roms and play them with built in emulators. Its higly customizable and runs on any machine - even old Think clients for 30 bucks. (You will need a BT-Dongle or USB-Controller though)

BIOS killer it's a great setup for people who are PC savvy.. don't try this if you're not!!! You'll brick your PC if it doesn't boot up or down correctly!!!

I'd love a plug and play with GC, Dreamcast,cand PS1/PS2 games. Never had a Dreamcast, the other two would be for nostalgia.

I wasn't familliar with Batocera, but it looks like an awesome front-end. Maybe I'll grab it as a great way to organize and build my own collection.

Batocera is actually a Linux-based gaming OS that uses emulation station as a front end. It boots directly into the OS, does not run in windows or virtual boxes. Retro-bat is a branch of batocera, apparently designed to run inside Windows, like Launchbox. This will be my first time trying it, excited to see how it works out...

You always should do a scan on these. luckly the harddrive I have only had one compromised file on it that was taken care of.

Mednafen just got a SEGA Saturn Update for PC. The M30 Bluetooth Controller works well with the Orange 8Bitdo Dongle.

Easy way to get batocera and a huge collection of games on a PC without internet connection? I'd definitely not plug it into anything connected to my home internet let alone something with personal info. Honestly windows is likely to get viruses regardless of what you download off the net so having your emulation system quarantined from everything else just makes sense anyways.

to be honest, the "trojans and viruses" are probably false positives on some parts of the emulators and bios files, or the fixed exes that bypass steam on those PC games.

I’ve been wanting to pick up a retro box off Amazon for awhile.

With this device, Shawn doesn’t have to worry about his dumper all video.

The last thing I'd ever plug into my computer is some pre-prepared external hard drive or USB thumb stick loaded with illegal software from [insert any major online store here]. Even if I don't run Windows so the malware risk is not really there--but then, you probably can't even run any of the included software without Windows anyway, so in that case I guess I'm outside of the target market anyway. I'll just get the ROMs myself and set them up on a system with RecalBox or Batocera... which is actually what I've done.

Hi man great vid and you got a new subscriber. Fir the virus detection it could be because of the frontend launching other exe that is the emulator or even the update parser for media and see if new games have been added.

If you’re worried about malware, and have a powerful enough computer, with modern virtual machine software you can make use of the GPU there too and run this inside a virtual machine. That way if the system gets corrupted you just delete it and reinstall.

Hey guys....Saw this on Amazon: There are MANY great retro game options out there, but this solution included 11 viruses and malware. Running these executables puts your system at risk, and you should not hook this hard drive up to your computer. It is compromised.

A lot of the roms that come on stuff like this are no good (not verified or compressed), and you risk viruses like one I’ve encountered that disables your wifi card at startup, mostly killing your favorite old laptop. Seen it happen more than once. I have some retro handhelds and I say get one, but throw away that sd and put custom os on it and verified roms. The sd that came on the miyoo refused to be formatted! That tells you everything. If you’ve ever copied unverified roms from these collections a lot of them don’t even work later. They’re considered bad dumps for a reason. Good roms will usually tell you the region they’re from in the file name too. I can’t download games for anyone, but I have downloaded a lot of verified roms for myself. All I can say is if you never get started you’ll never get finished lol

That requires the hard drive to have it's data storage in Terabytes, not Gigabytes. You want the modern roms, get the pricier drives.

Yo! RGT! if you have one see if it will work on an Asus rog Ally. That would be cool.

The only issue I foresee is this being just an external HDD. It has everything you may need but cannot run emulation self contained you need a pc powerful enough to play wii, PS3, Switch, or those pc games.

I got mine and it works great. I'm still trying to figure out the button mapping

surprised you havent covered the Majoras Mask recomp - especially as a fan of emulation.

With a steam deck and a large capacity mini SD card you could have this on the go!
