I absolutely understand and feel your frustration as I feel the same frustration Stu. NO streaming device in 2022 should be released with anything less than USB 3.0 and a gigabit ethernet port. Its just absolutely unacceptable. We the consumers MUST vote with our wallets and not buy this POS. We need to show them that this is unacceptable. Thats the only way they'll listen and innovate and quit giving us old tech on new devices.

Spot on - I laughed when I saw this lacklustre attempt at the 3rd generation of Firecube. Such a lazy upgrade - USB 2.0 & 100mbps ethernet is unacceptable for a 2022 model. Other than the HDMI in port, everything else is just pretty much the same.

Fair critique. Very much a refinement. For me its simply a case that it fixes long standing issues with the Gen 2 variant. One of which was colour space bugs when using an AVR. These are fully resolved. If you're invested in Alexa Home control and or Prime Video, I highly recommend this. But its no revolution. Good bit of kit, but not hugely different from Gen 2.

I bought the fire cube 2 recently thinking it would be an upgrade from my nvidia shield 2017. I was wrong, the cube won't play back on 4k without flickering. I had to turn it down to 1080. The colors especially reds are too saturated making everyone look like they are sunburned. What a disappointment. I hope they have sorted out these issues on the new model.

I had an issue on the second gen cube where people had greyish skin tones and thought it was a new TV. The problem was not setting to automatic resolution and "adaptive" HDR, instead of always on hdr. I also changed the bit depth of the colours to "up to 12 bit" if your TV supports that then check. Also, you can change the colour output between YCbcr in the same "display and audio" settings menu. Also check you have a good Hdmi lead as some support less bandwidth. I bought 3 gold plated 8k ones from Amazon for about £10, which is decent value for a future proof scenario.

I'll add the leads are still on Amazon for £8.98 for 3. They are DDMALL hdmi 2.1 (8k @ 60 hz) long and braided too which is a good deal and cheapest I could find in those specs.

Adding a few gimmicks and failing to do the expected upgrades leaves me saying they can keep it at it's current price point. Will they get it right with a 4th gen one, i doubt it. As much as i dislike Apple products, the top model in the new 2022 range blows this 3rd gen cube away in terms of spec for only a few more pounds. @TorqueFormulaWon
Жыл бұрын
To this cube? Probably not in my opinion. If you are happy with the firestick lite assess which is better for your needs, a firestick Max, a second gen cube, or normal firestick. I have the second gen cube as I was attracted to the low price to performance ratio and thought an extra 8gb of internal storage would be better than without but still don't come close to maxing that put so I would just wait for a good deal eg. Prime day if you want to upgrade. One thing the max fire stick has that the cube does not have is AV1 decoding and wifi 6 support but in reality the latter isn't That much difference. In summary it is up to you just pro/con each for your usage but if you are happy already with the firestick lite and a lot of storage you don't need to upgrade yet except if you like 4K, you will need to upgrade eventually so even a back up of either 4k stick, Max or cube bought at the right time (prime day or similar) would be beneficial for the future. In other words sometimes you may want to purchase ahead of time before your device breaks when the price is low and not when it does break and no sales are on.
@noname1st139 Жыл бұрын
Bang on with the observation,I said the exact same thing, the only difference really is HDMI in, and there is no real use for it unless you have a AV amp etc, WiFi 6 ain't the standard yet, if you gonna spend £140 maybe look at the Nvidia,Minix, you'll Get better specs in most area's

Problem with this workaround is that you will also need to setup WiFi. When the Fire TV Cube 3 goes to sleep it cuts off all power to the USB port. So what ever you have connected to that port will no longer function until you wake the device. Be it a USB NIC, USB flash/HDD/SSD, keyboard, mouse etc. So when your USB NIC goes down you will need the Cube to fall over to WIfi if you want to keep it connected to the LAN/WAN. Just keep that in mind.

Exactly anyone that doesn't know already the second gen cube comes with an ethernet adapter already. It isn't built in but plugs in the back of the cube. Honestly the second gen I bought two at £60 and £55 when they hit those lows last year, are 95% of this device for half the price (or cheaper when on offer). I'd imagine maybe Amazon will keep the price a bit higher from now on to sell more 3rd gen cubes for the "I'm spending £100 already on second gen, may as well spend more on 3rd gen crowd". Do you think the shield is a better buy? I did want to get a shield or Pro version if/when the cube gives up the ghost as at least they are quick, have upscaling, better for games, more ram in the pro version and have the gigabit ethernet port.

@@Steviemac05 Plex Blu Ray rips would have to be transcoded even on my home network as they frequently go above 100 Mbps. Many areas of the country are now on 3 Gbps while my area is 1 - 1.5 Gbps, so the 6E will be better for that. As far as the upscaling, I've seen reports that most people, especially with smaller size 4K sets can't see any difference. I certainly could not. The HDMI input is no big deal how many people derided that on the last iteration of the Xbox? So now the Series X/S doesn't have an HDMI input. Getting one of the new Cubes would set me back about $200CAD, so not going to buy one at that price. Everyone is talking price drop. Maybe for Black Friday, but it will probably be only slight. Not like my Cube 2 that I picked up for $65CAD over the summer. @@Steviemac05 There is a huge difference between USB 2.0 and 3.0. USB 3.0 is more than 10x faster and provides more power. But my Grey boxes are back, for now,&the remote definitely has its disappointments. But I do love having my Cubes all around&I wouldn't give them up for anything else I know of out there& I have tried alot of them. I also DEFINITELY agree 100000% that the 1/2 off 2nd Gen is the real Deal right now. That's what I paid for both of Mine back when I got them. I also definitely do understand where your coming from that they shouldn't be coming out with stuff that isn't actually even close to being up2date&it is very frustrating. But I think part of the reason they don't come out with more Up2date stuff is they don't have to. I don't think it is is way off. You went from first to third gen cube so of course there will be a big differences. I'm glad you are happy with it, but I have two second gen cubes which for the price I paid I am happy with (£60 and £55). This really fell short and was a huge disappointment if I'm being nice, and an insult if being harsher. I think they could have saved a bit of money from the radio antennas necessary for 6 Ghz and WiFi 6e and stuck with WiFi 6 as most people likely don't have WiFi 6 yet never mind 6e. They they could have upgraded the ports with the money saved and released either WiFi 6e or WiFi 7 in the next iteration/ generation.

No extra storage is a let down, the remote being extra, higher base price than second gen (£140 instead of £120). What you have now is an octa core processor that is a more powerful and relative to the measly memory which is still 2GB which for 2022 is on the low side. Still capable but for the price no thanks I'll wait if I don't go Nvidia Shield next time.

🤣🤣it’s David Dickinson. He fronts an antique show in the uk called “Dickinson’s Real Deal” in which the general public bring in their antiques and they either accept an offer from an expert or they put it to auction. What ever is the greater is the Real Deal.
I wrote a long critique of this review but I decided to shorten it. A rudely presented negative review before receiving the device, hooking it up and using it is beyond lame. I bought the Cube 3rd Gen for $95 by preordering it for $99 and saving an additional $5 in credit card reward. I figured 32% off of the base price was unlikely to show up this year even on Black Friday. I've stopped using my Nvidia Shield TV 1917. The point for me is the picture quality, not the USB port's speed or the ethernet speed (I'm not rewiring my house for a streamer--fast WIFI is fast enough). So I've looked at a lot of different streaming videos from different streaming services and the Cube 3rd Gen excels in speed, resolution, colors and contrast and it is more consistent in those than other streamers I've used. I find that the Super Resolution upscaling enhances the HD and SD video usefully but that requires more comment than I choose to leave here.

@@StuTech I was commenting on your review--not on you personally. I could ask why rude? I could ask why review a device you have not touched or seen results from? Rhetorical questions. Answers not required. I've been using my Cube 3 for a week now. It's not perfect but it's picture is superior for watching video than my Shield TV '17, my ROKU Ultra, my Fire TV Stick 4K, my older Fire Stick I got for using with my Fire TV Recast. Those devices can all give me pretty good videos but generally requiring tweaking the TV's video settings of color, brightness, contrast, et cetera, when going from one streaming source to another. The CUBE 3 seems to manage a color scheme with the Super Resolution sytem turned on that once adapted to the TV works well for almost all input including native 4K. BTW, your viewers might not realize that "Super Resolution" isn't just a hyperbolic name thought up by Amazon. It dates back about 30 years as a term for a whole class of evolving image enhancing technologies. Look it up in Wikipedia. BTW, it's not just the video that is enhanced. The still photos in the screensaver are also. It's not "blast you out of your chair" exciting, but I appreciate it. I do know that casual viewers might not notice or feel that it is worth buying at $140. At $200, the latest Shield TV Pro costs too much, isn't built for using with the Recast, and is now long in the tooth--so a 32% off price on the Cube 3 was an easy decision. In years of streaming I've never found the need for a USB port or ethernet port of any speed on a streaming device. If you need those options it's all fine with me--simply say that and then say that lack means that you don't actually want to spend the time to review the actual device itself in use streaming. I'm curious: do you actually need more than 100 Mbit ethernet? What essential uses do you have for USB3 or USB-c that wouldn't work fine with USB2?

If you want to get into this I will oblige so here goes. It’s a flagship device for 2023 and they should have 2022 parts or not at all. They should have just stuck with WiFi 6e and no one would be mentioning anything other than than positives but they’d chose to include parts from circa 2010 and you want me to not mention it? The picture stats you mention are just in your head and it’s telling you it’s better because you know you’ve overpaid and that ok but others shouldn’t be fooled by the propaganda. You know that it’s overpriced when Apple are charging less! I never thought I would see that. Enjoy your cube and I wish you a nice day. Enjoy

@@StuTech I get your point: I've seen the device work and find it to work better than other devices I own and know well. Whereas, before seeing the device or trying it out doing its primary job of streaming content, you think you know more than I do about what I've seen and what it means. So thanks for being clear about the evidence you use and how you use it. That adds insight to the conversation. I've been pleasantly surprised at how much I like the snappy performance when button pressing but also very pleasantly surprised that the image produced is more consistently good without tweaking the TV for different streaming sources. As I indicated, it's not simply about resolution after upscaling. It's about the overall consistently enhanced image whether upscaled or not. Your TV may not require that but the Cube 3 goes a long way to improving that experience for me. You said you thought the price I paid was somehow so high that it influenced how I evaluated the device. I don't evaluate on stats or price. I test. Actually the 32% off I got from the base price of $140 is $55 less than the top of the line new Apple box and $35 less than the lower priced version. My price was also less than half what I paid for the Nvidia Shield TV that I don't use anymore and only a little more than I paid the ROKU Ultra 4K. Price is a useful consideration when buying, but does not influence how I evaluate a device. These prices are too close to get excited about in my book. I got a good price and snapped it up. If I had paid $45 more for it at base price I can't say I'd be more satisfied or less. Just out $45 that I didn't need to be out. Enjoy whatever you choose to use next. I hope it has all the ports you need, all the RAM you can fill, and an ethernet data rate 40 times the streaming rate of 4K video. And definitely have a very nice day.

Agreed and I did say as such. Personally it’s a premium price for old parts. 1gig is the minimum these days so they should have cut the price accordingly but Amazon still charged the price for the top spec. It’s like buying a high performance car and then capping it’s top speed to 70mph as that’s all the speed that is needed, at least that is my take on it 😃
@dlbark Жыл бұрын
@StuTech, no one is using gigabit Ethernet in 2022-2023 as the only way to connect to internet. Amazon has Wi-Fi 6 and 6E antennas on this device. Leaps and bounds faster than what’s on the fire stick 4k max which was the best 4k device Amazon had until this 3rd gen refresh. Fire Stick 4k max doesn’t have a Ethernet or usb port on it. You obviously don’t have this new device and you’re complaining because the first thing you’re complaining over was the price. It’s $139.99 US and with the new remote it’s $174.98 US. Buy the cheaper one to try out and compare the differences and improvements Amazon made before just reading ambiguous tech specs from a 3rd party.

@TorqueFormulaWon

The same goes for the new Echo Studio 2022. There is no justification in buying it, when there is minimal difference between the previous generation.
Well said….thinking the same thing myself when I looked at the specs…….I suppose it is fit for purpose with bare minimum tech and nothing innovative …..definitely thinking the third gen 4k Appletv is a much more capable unit

Hopefully Nvidia comes out with an upgraded Shield Pro soon. A faster processor, 4GB of RAM, at least 32GB of internal storage, a HDMI 2.1 port and support for newer codecs like AV1 would be nice. IMO Amazon dropped the ball with their FireTV Cube 3. Using ports that have been obsolete for over a decade on what is supposed to be a premium device is a joke.
Still 2GB RAM, still 16GB, USB 2.0, 100Mb Ethernet, no Remote Pro and that shitty FireOS instead of Google TV. What's new? A little faster CPU, WIFI AX and AV1 codec support for much, much higher price. Just compare specification and price to new APTV.

I mostly got it for my Echo Studio
This is not the device for anyone with a NAS holding media etc, HD Homerun Live Tv which requires well over 100 mb/s data stream, all connected via a managed switch over a LAN.... i.e me. 100 mb/s and USB 2.0 port on a 2022 device is a very poor show in my view. A 2017 NVidia Shield trounces it.
SOME OF THE SPECS NOT UP TO DAYS DEMANDS NEED FOR SPEED.....WHICH IS BIT OVER PRICED FOR WHAT IT IS. GOOD HONEST REVIEW.

It is not bad per se but it isn't really future proofing anything and probably wouldn't cost Amazon much more to implement. I fully agree with Stu. I run the cube off of wifi as I get some buffering issues sometimes on ethernet not via Netflix though. The 100 mb, usb 2.0 is a huge let down, not to mention the worst thing being the new remote will add an extra £40 to the already inflated price, it is ridiculous.

@StuTech LOVE THE HONESTY! So I did only paid $100 for my 3rd Gen but I will say it does seem faster and smother than my 2ndGen. I can also run more gigs worth of info thru the USB drives now then I could before in my 2nd gen with my otg(that could have been because of the otg).

It's not enough of an upgrade to me and now that it costs even more it just makes it a hard sell. maybe if I can get one for £60 down the line in one of the sales it might be worth it but there's no current device that suits me.. I have the 2nd gen cube and got rid of my 2017 shield 4 months ago as the cpu and remote felt slow (even though it has the best GPU) and the 2019 shield also wasn't enough of an upgrade. The USB port also only recognizes FAT32 formatted drives, limiting local file playback. If you thought you were going to be able to playback your DVD and Blu Ray rips, forget it as you will have to cope with the 4GB file size limit. Terrible design flaw in 2022...

The most recent firmware update added NTFS which I much prefer to FAT32. I have a 64GB NTFS formatted flash in the USB2 port and things are great. I put a dvd ripped to mp4 on the drive and played well and looked awesome with just the Cube's "media player."

Well since the previous generation won't be available, if a user wants the cube, it's not like he has a choice. Otherwise I'd like the idea that the new cube is compatible wifi 6 and has an Ethernet connector so good improvement. Frankly don't give a shit about the USB port since I won't use it

OK StuTech, how would a 3.0 USB port or a Gigabit ethernet connecting make this devise perform any better? And if you need more storage, USB 2.0 storage sticks are cheap and are several times faster than this video streaming device actually needs. Also, older Routers are limited to 100 Mbps anyways.

It’s simple, it’s £140 and for that price it should be USB C and gig Ethernet or don’t have the ports at all. It embarrassing to include tech from 10 years ago and then try and pass it off as an upgrade and anyone who defends it is a fanboy. If Apple did this they would get blasted for it so it should and is the same for Amazon.

USB 2.0 is slow and unreliable. USB 3.0 is 10x faster and provides more power to the port. That would be huge for anyone who wants to play video files from a USB drive or use it for expanded storage. A 100Mbps Ethernet connection can easily be oversaturated by some higher bitrate 4K video files. Better question would be why did a company like Amazon use ports that have been obsolete for over a decade on their flagship device?
I have it, it's not shit at all they are a business like any other and decisions made, poor decisions I agree but the actual streaming device is just fine, I also would like a gigabit connection but, that will come in the next generation in 2 to 3 years , they might even get everything right! BUT as a whole the 3rd generation is a very good device for streaming FOR STREAMING, the one that waiting for is already here it's called THE NVIDIA SHEILD PRO ! That's the one, i also have i like both gaming is nvidia,s thing, streaming is fire qube 4k 3rd generation thing, it's that simple. Not completely complicated.

Amazon would have made the device more expensive if they put in the usb 3.0. Don't most new products only have very few changes from the previous versions ? If you get the same product for a newer one each year then you won't hardly notice the difference.

WiFi no matter what standard will never be as reliable as a wired connection. They should have at least used more recent port standards such as USB 3.1 and Gigabit Ethernet. Putting ports using standards that have been obsolete for over a decade on what is supposed to be a premium device is s joke.

It’s like buying a high performance car and then capping it’s top speed to 70mph as that’s all the speed that is needed, at least that is my take on it 😃
@StuTech, no one is using gigabit Ethernet in 2022-2023 as the only way to connect to internet.

Anyone who wants a more reliable connection uses Gigabit Ethernet. I will never use WiFi for stationary streaming devices. To me a Gigabit Ethernet port > WiFi 6 and it's not even close
