Amazing, WWII veteran's helmet found in France after 60 years
Ойын-сауық
Marvin D. Moles made a nighttime parachute jump into France on August 15th 1944, as a member of I Company of the 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment, during Operation Dragoon, the invasion of southern France. In 1999, his camouflaged and rigger modified paratrooper helmet with his named carved on the front was found hanging on the wall of a restaurant in southern France. This video explains how it was possible to track Marvin Moles down 60 years later and describes how he came back to France to see his helmet and visit the battlefields he had fought on in 2004.
The long version video about Marvin Moles' helmet can be seen here: • Old version - Research...
Marvin Moles' story is also fully documented in the book "Autopsy of a Battle, the Liberation of the French Riviera", Schiffer, 2014.

@@724bigal My email is shown at the end of this video, on my channel page, and at the start and end of most of my videos.
Thanks for all of the work you do for all of those that served in WW II. Your channel should have many more subscribers…
Absolutely love your content. Superb work. Thank you.
I've had a German dog tag that was dug up in Stalingrad for years. I've often wondered if there was some way to decipher it and maybe get it to his family. As a veteran myself it kinda hits home that I'd want someone to do that for me. This channel is outstanding! 👍🇺🇸🇩🇪🍻

It is now possible to get your ID tag deciphered, yes, by making a request to the Bundesarchiv Abteilung PA

The work you do is Amazing and so rewarding. Great to see the soldiers are not forgotten.
I'm so glad you had a chance to meet Mr. Moles. What a remarkable story, and what a brave soldier. I looked up his obituary because I was curious where he lived (I, too, live in Northern Virginia). Apparently, he lived and is buried in southwest Virginia near Dublin. Thanks again for your videos...really enjoy them.

I like the details and all the interest you provide, I also watch iron mike digging up bits from the war in the German forests but I often feel he does this for the trophies he finds which I understand but with no empathy. As old as I am I have always had this kind of interest, I`m so pleased to follow all the hard work you do. Thank you
Rip hero 😿
Fantastique I vidéo comme d'habitude merci beaucoup
Did you also do a photo of him with the helmet on? If I would be him I would have loved to take it back on at least one last time. My grandfather was a Gebirgsjäger in Poland, Norway and Finland and thankfully survived the Rheinwiesenlager. Greetings from Germany!
Great tribute Jean-Loup, Nice is certainly better than the North of England 😅😅. I've always been interested in military history but I think that it's only been the last 12 years or so that I've become immersed in it. The Internet and the readily available access to great documentaries and channels such as yours are wonderful tools to help in understanding and learning about the past....a good accompliment to reading books on a subject. My wife and I toured the south of France, Italy and Switzerland 21 years ago ....visiting Nice, Menton , Antibes etc....even though I was aware of the invasion of southern France during ww2 I had no idea of the sacrifices that soldiers and civilians made at the time....I wish I had known....great stuff, great channel, cheers m8😊😊😊😊
You sir are of the finest quality 🫡
I love your videos!! Incredible work
Awesome thank you for your time in recognizing these great men and women. Sorry I could never find my grandfather’s original photos of his glider landing in the invasion of southern France I do have a copy of him telling his story on tape cassette he made for me before he passed I would like to digitally capture it someday

@@verncommet1798 I interviewed a couple of glider pilots and soldiers of the 442nd, and included what they told me in the book I wrote about the southern France invacion. If you ever find photos or documents about operation Dragoon, I would be very gratefull if you could share them with me.
Too bad that Normandy and D day is in all book movies and operation dragoon is virtually forgotten. Your work is amazing, the story telling of individual common people like me and you and the worst thing for all of us is war... As a child who run in shelter during war in Croatia that scars sometimes never heal and I cannot think of soldiers what they saw and endured... What horrors and fear...

It's like how of most people's knowledge of, and most references to the Battle of the Bulge consists exclusively of the siege of Bastogne, when there were many other portions of the battle, and much heroism, that are utterly discarded. Fortunately, there has been adequate coverage of my particular skirmish of interest, the capture of Cheneux on 20 December.
Nicely done. Thanks
Fantastic work ✌
That's a great story.
Fantastic
Gracias, ver este trabajo es conocer un poco más de historia, saludos desde Islas Canarias

He wanted to finally get his money back from the statement of charges on that helmet. ;)
