They are redoing the point itself because of the time it took to fix the error. Similar to in USTA where if balls from other courts are flying to yours before your 2nd serve and takes up a lot of time, people will usually allow a let. It is technically 2nd serve but it is a courtesy to give the 1st
These next generation of guys have such a cohesive and kind rapport with each other. Really nice to see. Competition in sport SHOULD be this way. People who pretend sport is like the days of gladiators fighting to the death are idiots
@Thor-Orion
Ай бұрын
Depends on the sport. Fight sports need to have a harder edged mentality to be able to compartmentalize harming another person that you don’t have personal animosity with. I believe sportsmanship is still immensely important in these sports, probably even more so than other sports, but the gladiators didn’t really have animosity between them, either.
@Black_Caucus

100%. There's nothing 'uncompetitive' or 'soft' or 'OMG everyone gets a participation trophy waaaaaah' about being a fierce competitor and dying to win, while *also* having a mutual respect for your competitor and enemy in a match. The two are meant to go hand in hand.

@@lise1806 It explains it though in the text. The 2nd ball was faulty which mean that the time it takes to get a new ball means he will loose the momentum and the "aiming" he got from the 1st serve, and the other player decided to give the 1st serve back to him.

Yep, that is what tennis needs. These two are examples for the tour!
It should have been a second serve enforced by the chair umpire. Alcaraz took a first serve and had the opportunity to inspect the balls provided prior to said serve. No hindrance on the first or second.

I agree but if it's a rule due to how long it took him to reach the umpire and back, disrupting his motion. I do agree it should have been a second tho.
@dorothygale1104

A player can override a call if it is to the advantage of the other player. It is no different than if a player wins a point because of a bad line call or a bad umpire call and concedes that point to their opponent. If Ruud wants to give Alcaraz another 1st serve, he can do that under the rules. This was not an issue of Alcaraz asking for or expecting another 1st serve and the umpire giving Alcaraz another 1st serve over Ruud’s objection, in which case you are correct about what should be enforced. But ultimately, if a player wants to disadvantage themselves, they have that option. I’ve seen situations where a player wants to concede a point to the other player because a bad call was made and the umpire didn’t want to recognize the concession, so on the next serve the player who unsuccessfully tried to concede the prior point effectively gave a point to the opponent by intentionally not returning the next serve.

It was the 2nd ball, and the time it takes to get it replaced means that the momentum and "aiming" the server has from the 1st serve is lost, hence the other player nicely decided to give it back to him.

Anytime there is an unusually long time delay between the first and second serve, it's good sportsmanship to offer a first serve.

The 1st serve wasn't wit the flat ball tho.
@2dogsf-ing
Ай бұрын
That's what I thought as it went to the his right side. So I'm confused on what is going on. It's not the same ball he traded saying it was so called flat and the serve ball before trading balls. There was 3 different balls in that entire exchange. So it should have been second serve no matter what. I would understand of a redo serve if it was the same ball served to the be traded out but it wasn't.
@mjc8247

he gave him the first serve as there was a long wait between the serves and more likely to miss

Yes so this is hard to explain if you don't play tennis but when you miss the first serve is kind of like an "aiming serve", if you have to stop and then lose your focus with something else then it becomes like a first serve again Ruud knows this and just gave Alcaraz another first serve out of sportmanship

As mentioned by the umpire and the commentators, it's not in the rules, but it's in the spirit of the game. We do it a lot in recreational tennis, if there is a lengthy distraction that is no one's fault that breaks the rhythm between first and second serve, so why not allow good sportsmanship in professional tennis.
