Hilltop JD614 not true. The song was written by van zant and Collins about the guitarist Gary rossington especially an incident when he wrapped his car around an oak tree and nearly died. “Whiskey bottles and brand new cars - oak tree you’re in my way. There’s too much coke and too much smoke. Look what’s going on inside you” I don’t think it was an intervention in the sense of wanting anyone to be as sober as a judge. They were rock stars, after all. More that he needed to take it easy and not lose control like he was.

Hilltop JD614 man just do your research. For starters it wasn’t about collins car wrecks it was rossingtons. If you can’t even get that straight I’m not sure where to go with this. Also you seem to not know what an intervention is because saying that you need to clean yourself up is pretty much the definition.

This song is about Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington, who bought a new car (a Ford Torino), got drunk, and crashed it into a tree, then a house ("whiskey bottles, brand new car, oak tree you're in my way"). The band was supposed to start a tour in a few days, but had to postpone it because of Rossington's injuries. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Allen Collins wrote this song. They were not pleased with Rossington, whose drug and alcohol problems were affecting the band. The band fined Rossington $5000 for holding up the tour. Skynyrd made an effort to stay sober on this tour. Drugs and alcohol were banned from the dressing rooms.

I recently watched him and the kids do Eminem’s Godzilla and he was like an oracle breaking down the lyrics. Now he might have heard that song many times vs this skynard track which was the first time but still... These lyrics are easy to hear and every second line is about how the drugs are killing Gary, the subject. The hook is “ooh that smell...the smell of death surrounds you” ffs! How he came out of this thinking this was a party song is beyond me!

I love your reactions, and I enjoyed this one too because you were very passionate about what you were saying. However, you misunderstood this song. This is an anti-drug song. And this was based on a true story when Gary Rossington, one of the three guitarists totaled his car around an oak tree. ( I actually have some bark off this tree )This caused the band to have to reschedule several concerts and they fined Gary $10,000 because of this. The lyrics “ ooh that smell. The smell of DEATH surrounds you.” Ronnie is calling him a fool and tells him to go ahead and stick that needle in his arm and one more snort of the nose and that’s one hell of a price for you to get your kicks because he probably would not have survived. The band wis cleaning up their act, for the most part and this is definitely an anti-drug song and a STERN warning.

The song was written as a warning to guitar player Gary Rossington who was doing all the things mentioned in the song. After the success of the first album and tour, he crashed his car into an oak tree during a night of partying. He delayed the second tour by months. Singer Ronnie Van Zant(band leader) was furious and worried about fellow band member Gary Rossington. So he wrote this song as a warning to Gary and all others who indulge. Oddly enough, with all of Gary's vices, he was the last surviving member of the original band.

"That Smell" is a song by the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. Written by Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Allen Collins, it was released in 1977 on the album Street Survivors. At the time the song was written, the band had been using alcohol, cocaine, and heroin.[1] Van Zant said that he started using heroin and cocaine to relieve the pressure of performing in front of large audiences.[1] Van Zant's inspiration for the song was the increasing reckless indulgences of the band members culminating in the evening when guitarist Gary Rossington crashed his Ford Torino into an oak tree along Mandarin Road in Jacksonville, Florida,[1] after excessive consumption of alcohol and drugs. Van Zant was thus inspired to write the song as a warning about the consequences of careless overuse of drugs and alcohol. The song earned Rossington the moniker "Prince Charming" from Van Zant. Later when asked, Van Zant said, "I had a creepy feeling things were going against us, so I thought I'd blow lines, slam some H and write a morbid song."[1] The lyrics cautioned that "tomorrow might not be here for you", and that "the smell of death surrounds you". Three days after the album was released, the band was devastated by a plane crash. The crash killed several members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, including Van Zant. "That Smell" was the second single released from Street Survivors and failed to chart.

That smell was Death, that what people said about them, because it was more than the party, it was addiction. They have another song called "the needle & the spoon". There's three guitarists in the band.

Ronnie was telling his guitarist, “you have the smell of death on you” he was in the depth of his addiction and wrapped his car around a tree, it ripped him up. Three days after this song officially released their plane crashed killing the singer, but sparing Gary R, “the troubled guitarist” he survived and got his life together

To me, this song is about the dark side of drug dependency. A cautionary tale about moderation. So many talented ppl have succumbed to drug use.

This was written about the guitarist Gary Rossington, specifically, and the things he was doing that were fucking him up. The singer, Ronnie Van Zandt, would look at him when they sang this song live. This is a deadly serious song that doesn't really fit the playfulness of your reaction.

I think this song was a message to their band member who wrapped his car around a tree..... "oak tree, you're in my way," and was killed. His addiction was his death sentence and the other members couldn't save him.

The smell of death surrounds you. Ronnie wrote this when he was really mad because they had to change their concert dates. Gary the one with the Les Paul got into a car accident. He hit that oak tree that was in his way. Ronnie knew something had to break and he didn't want it to be the band. They were all Heavy Partiers an insanely addicted. Ronnie knew it had to stop. Rip Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, and Dean manager. They all died in the plane crash on October 20th 1977🎈🐦🦊

All 3 guitarists do atleast 2 solos each in this one during those parts, Gary starts it , then Steve after 1st verse, then during break down its Steve, then Allen, then Gary, same for 2nd break down, Steve, Allen, Gary, with Allen and Steve doing the dueling leads part
